Dog Sleeping On His Back

Why does my dog, a cocker spaniel, enjoy sleeping on his back?

Or why does any dog, for that matter.

I guess it must be comfortable for them. It just looks odd. :?

  • is so they can give you the money shot :-)
  • Aw, it's 'cause he loves you and feels safe with you. Or he's an exhibitionist. I vote for the former, though.
  • I'm not sure why dogs do a lot of things, but I agree with Anastasia on this one...your puppy certainly feels safe with you! Though I'm not sure what this means:

  • Our cat does that sometimes. It cracks us up. He just sometimes is on his back, legs in the air. We don't know why, but so funny.
  • jackson is all about the money shot (see the fuzza wuzza thread for his retrospective). Everybody else is right - it's a sign of trust when they expose their bellies like that
  • Aww, my dog (a large German Shepherd mix) sleeps on his back too. He sleeps against the wall, and his back paws are usually resting against the wall.
  • Oscar has to lean against the couch to sleep on his back. His chest is too big to stay in that position on his own.
  • completely unrelated: Weren't people told to have babies sleep on their backs to avoid SIDS?
