Person hit by vehicle at Carroll and Eighth Monday morning

Anyone know what happened? According to Gothamist newsmap, it says something about a "Possible A.I. job". I have no idea what that means.

Saw the whole street blocked off on my way home this morning (at 11:30am), there's a car parked across Eighth with smashed windshield. Also according to Gothamist, it says 9:34am, and the cops are still there, so it sounds like something pretty bad happened.

  • At 8:20 am there was a pile of fire engines, police and EMS. I choose to walk my kids to school the other way. It did not look good.
  • We passed by at 10:30 and a portion of Carroll was still taped off. Numerous police talking to people on the scene. Also what appeared to be a pile of blankets (?) in the street.
  • Passed by with my kid on way to school around 8:20. Looked pretty bad - a largish man in a suit was being wheeled on a gurney into ambulance. His face was very red - but not completely sure it was blood. Didn't want to stick around.
  • a pedestrian crossing between cars on Carroll above 8th ave was hit by a car turning from 8th ave onto carroll .

i'm told the driver of the car was visibly shaken. the car's windshield was shattered. the police were there taking photos, etc for most of the day

A.I. = Accident Investigation, which are done when a victim of a MVA is either likely to die or is dead.
  • The ferocity of the drivers in North Park Slope during the commuting hours, especially the morning, is completely out of control.
  • Thanks everyone. I know about the drivers, its pretty scary sometimes.

now that is something we can agree on

    Agreed!

    I agree too.

We don't know the details of how the man got hit by a car. But 8th Ave is just a speedway from the Prospect Exp to Flatbush Ave. This has been studied and discussed and studied and discussed over and over again.
  • Involuntary manslaughter.
  • Isn't Carroll & Eighth the very same intersection where a bicyclist, (a father of two, I think) was struck and killed a few months back?

It strikes me as so strange that in our culture, fragile human beings are expected to coexist safely with two ton metal projectiles. How many people die on the roads every day? And for what? Why do we choose to make a world where the simple act of crossing the street can be deadly?

    Yep, one block away.
  • Some News From NY1

A man is fighting for his life after being hit by a car in Brooklyn.

It happened around eight in the morning at the intersection of Carroll Street and Eighth Avenue in Park Slope.

Police say the 57-year-old man was hit while crossing the street. He was taken to Lutheran Hospital in critical condition.

The driver remained at the scene. No criminality is suspected.
  • More news from Streetblog. Apparently "the victim had died shortly after the collision."

  • My condolences to the man's family and friends.

My dad was killed while crossing in a marked crosswalk (in Cranford, NJ) a little less than two years ago. He was the most gentle man I've ever known, and was a month away from finally retiring. My mom happened upon the scene minutes later and watched the man she loved for 26 years die on the pavement.

It is terrible how many unnecessary tragedies are caused by people's impatience and self-importance. So many lives are ruined trying to get to work 3 minutes sooner, or because someone didn't feel like calling for a taxi from the bar...

I guess I'm trying to say that this happens more than we think. Please be careful. Please don't drink and drive.

Pedestrian run down on Eighth Avenue!
    By Gersh Kuntzman
    The Brooklyn Paper

An SUV plowed into a pedestrian on Eighth Avenue during the morning rush on Monday, sending the 57-year-old man high into the air, witnesses said.

The driver of the Toyota Suburban remained at the scene while EMS workers transported the victim to Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park in critical condition.

His name was not released by the NYPD.

The accident occurred at 8:11 am near the corner of Carroll Street, just one block from the spot where cyclist Jonathan Millstein was run down and killed last year.

Residents of Park Slope have long complained that Eighth Avenue — the only northbound one-way street in the neighborhood — has become a speeding-car-filled conduit from the Prospect Expressway to Flatbush Avenue. Last year, residents asked the city to consider changing the street to two-way traffic.

Someone in the Streetsblog comments has a good idea, responding to the NYPD reaction on the scene.

How about quoting the tipster's quote of the detective as you write to:

    Deputy Inspector John A. Argenziano
    78th Precinct
    65 6th Avenue
    Brooklyn, NY, 11217

    Community Affairs: (718) 636-6410

The 78th Precinct Community Council meets the last Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the 78th Precinct station house.

The tipster is right: you have to be going pretty fast for a human head to actually puncture your windshield.

Let the COURTS presume innocence until proven guilty. Not cops.

If there's compelling evidence that possibly criminally high speed contributed to a pedestrian being hit, cops and DAs should actively pursue charges, for #@$ sake. Let the court system protect the accused. Cops and DAs should try to, you know, "protect" the rest of us.
  • This is so sad. I hate it when people die on 8th Avenue. I live on 8th Ave & cars whiz by so fast sometimes - they've got to be going at least 60mph (I doubt that was the case in turning a corner at 8am, but still - just making a point). And the horns. My god the horns. I'm lucky to sleep past 6am on any given day.
  • So the Brooklyn Paper Assumes the car was speeding since well neighbors say cars speed on 8th ave and the Streetsblog busybody er tipster says the guy was stationary. Huh, did the car jump the curb?
  • You don't need to be going that fast to break a windshield, I don't know why Streetsblog is assuming the guy was speeding just because the windshield was broken. A human body is pretty heavy and hard, im sure it wouldn't take much.

8th Ave is a speedway, but the Brooklyn Paper's objectivity is out the window. When they say that it is "where cyclist Jonathan Millstein was run down and killed last year", they lose me. Yes, a man died a block away on Sept 12, 2008. But he hit the bus.
  • It is difficult to make any judgments given the limited facts, other than that it is tragic.

That said, I feel safe in saying I like cheese.
  • Thanks Mougar, I feel safer knowing you like cheese. :cyclopsani:

I've heard this also but is there a source? I'm not doubting; but, there's so many rumors that swirl when something like this happens.

I don't understand why a simple speed trap with a couple of cops isn't mentioned, but elaborate adjustments to 8th ave's traffic patterns are. I've lived off 8th ave for 8 years now, and though I've seen countless cars go by at 30mph over the limit, not once have I seen a stop by a traffic officer.

The accident or the circumstances? It was all over the internets...

The doorman at the building in front of where it happened told me the bike hit the bus. I also read it here

  • A witness posted on Brownstoner -- it looks like the victim was in the crosswalk and the driver was speeding.
I was also in this intersection on the west side of 8th Ave - pedestrian was struck on the east / park side of the 8th Ave in the Carroll St crosswalk. This driver was FLYING up Carroll. Anyone who says sun glare is an issue...clearly we have all had this happen as drivers, however speed should be reduced if that's the case. I would estimate he was going close to 50mph. He flew by me across 8th Ave...I did not hear brakes just the impact and there were no skid marks indicating any attempt to stop. If you saw it, you know how he was hit extraordinarily hard based on how high he flew in the air and forward away from the car. We all share the roads, pedestrians and drivers alike. Neither has more of a right to negligence. We all must take care to know our surroundings, but speed limits were clearly not abided by in this case. It was a horrific scene that could only be caused by excessive speed.
So much for the theory that a 57-year old man decided to dart out from between parked cars without looking.

The circumstances. "The cyclist ran into the bus" can mean a lot of things. It's horrible and sad anyway you shake it - I didn't want to sound insensitive.
  • So sad that this person lost their life yesterday
  • Subject: NYPD enforcement

It still amazes me how little the NYPD seems to care about these situations. Paraphrasing what someone said on another blog - you're more likely to get in trouble for jumping a turnstile than you are for running someone over.
