Fabric Stores

Does anyone know of a fabric store around the north slope? I did a search of this board and everything was from 2006. Any updates?

I just need some cheap white fabric to build a down and dirty lightbox.

    Fabric stores in all of the slope are pretty limited. The ones in North Slope (near Union and 7th) are fancy, pricey stuff. I really can't think of any stores in the rest of the slope that sell fabric other than nice stuff for kids clothes or upholstery.

    Take the Q to Canal and go to one of those stores on Bway just south of Canal. You should be able to find some cheap stuff there.

    How about Brooklyn mercantile on 5th Avenue? I thought they sold fabric, though, I have no idea of their prices.

    Brooklyn mercantile has adorable fabric. other than that i get it at that crafty place on 7th ave & Union. But if you really want selection just go to "Mood" in the city.

    I just posted this in another thread...
    if you want cheap, get on the B63 bus and go to Baltic Bazaar on Atlantic Ave. They have cheeeep upholstery fabric: $2 - $5 a yard. Mostly remnants, ie small pieces.

    You are going to lose your mind in this place -- they have a wall full of sample squares arranged by color.
    I think they sell by the pound.

    ikea, actually, has amazing fabrics super cheap.

    but if you're building a lightbox i've been told that white felt is the way to go. (want to build them together? i desperately need one)

    has anyone bought fabric from Ikea - I've always wondered, do you just find an employee to cut it for you?

    I ended up going to marshalls and buying some old pillow cases for two dollars. If you can stand the chaos, they have an endcap in the back corner of the store that has tons of fabric from opened sheets and pillow cases.

    Potter, would felt diffuse the light?

    I slapped one together out of Fresh Direct Boxes, Poster Board and Pillow cases yesterday that worked great for a grand total of $4. Will be looking to do something a bit more permanent soon though....

    i'm not sure what the purpose of the felt is. myguess is that it won't crease or look billowy in any way. there are youtube videos that should you how to do this. generally i just drape sheets over boxes to create a sweep, but i know there has to be a better way.
