A genuine fresh fruit smoothie in the slope?? where??

edited November -1 in Park Slope
Was looking for something frozen, fruity, and amazing as I was leaving the Y and realized I had no clue where to get a healthy smoothie in Park Slope. I thought for a second, oh, I'll just go to Baskin Robins, but once I was in there looking at calorie counts and ridiculousness of being in a chain store when there are all these great local joints, forced me to turn around and walk out.

So anyone got a great post-workout blended beverage joint they'd like to share with me? Much obliged, much obliged.
:P

  • Whatever you do, do not go to Fuel (which is sort of in south slope/windsor terrace.) I can't find the roachwrap threat at the moment, but someone might link to it.

    don't do it. Just don't.
  • You know, I broke down and bought a juicer. I make a pitcher of smoothies at the beginning of the week and that way I always have them.
  • I keep strawberries (and a few other fruits) in the freezer and usually have bananas and milk and/or juices in the fridge. Toss 'em in the blender and I get a smoothie that I know the exact contents of.

I've not tried often but I've never had a fruit smoothie that tasted like what it was supposed to be so I stick to making my own. Sorry I can't tell you about any in the hood.
  • What about Naidres? A bit of a walk... but I think they have fresh smoothies.

  • Pita Pan does fruit smoothies, pretty tasty.

Pita Hut right there on the corner of 9th St and 5th Ave has a bunch of different blended juices they make. Their food is pretty decent, but I've never tried their drinks.
  • Fuel is REALLY good. I am not into health food at all, but Fuel is very tasty. I get a strawberry and banana shake – I think the bananas are fresh and the strawberries are frozen. The baked fries are great. Heck, everything is good – health food with some kick.

There is a new shawarma take out place just two weeks old across from the post office by the Pavilion movie theatre. I got a yummy falafel and great baklava there yesterday and the owner told me she makes fresh fruit shakes (but I didn’t try it yet). That spot has always been jinxed but the falafel was great and the baklava was out of this world good. I hope they do well. Everything looked fresh and clean.
  • I had a delicious smootie at Fuel it was banana/strawberry and even came with some sort of crunchy black bits. Added texture. I loved it!!
  • I stop at Fuel several times a week and get a shake and a snack and have never had any problems aside from a pack of girls who hang out there and do the loud cell phone thing. It is not an enjoyable place to sit and eat. Dirty tables, lots of movement. I agree that it is not the cleanest place, but I don't get the roach vibe either. Their delivery is fast and reliable too. And come on, baked spicey fries are better then the real thing.
  • I might have been inclined to try it again had the guy not hung up on me and fought with me about the roach i had just ingested.

Are you sure it wasn't a protein shake? Insects are a great source of protein.

I second Naidres... they make a mean smoothie! Kinda cold out for one now though
  • windsor cafe. very. very yummy.
  • I make them every day at home for next to nothing.

    one half a banana
    6-7 frozen strawberries
    some blueberries and blackberries
    two scoops vanilla ice cream
a few splashes of 100% cranberry juice (not cocktail)
about one cup of milk (adjust for thickness)

This will fill up one very large cup (about the size of McDonald's large)

Why pay some clown $5 to make something you can make yourself in 5 minutes?

I have to disagree with your "next to nothing" comment. The ingredients you listed (see below) are in fact very expensive. This is one of the reasons I buy several shakes a week. Making them at home just doesn’t save any money.

  • My mo-cheaper version of that is-

a dollop of fat free vanilla yogurt
about 2/3 cup of fat free soymilk
a small handful of frozen blueberries
    4 or so frozen strawberries
    lots of ice
a tbs of peanutbutter if I feel like I want the protein

Its a smaller smoothie but its plenty for me. I can usually make a bag of strawberries, bag of blueberries last about 8 smoothies and the yogurt lasts a while as well depending on the size I buy.
  • My smoothie:

2 cups of Odwalla carrot juice
    1/2 cup of pomegranate juice
1/2 cup of rice milk or almond milk
frozen strawberries, blackberries and WILD blueberries
    2 tbsp flax oil
2 tbsp Trader Joes Very Green powder

    Yummmmmmmmmmmm.

I have to say though, 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream in a smoothie? That's a milkshake.

Plain whole-fat yogurt is great, but take away the fat and add fake vanilla flavoring? Yuck!

    And soymilk, seriously?

Sorry, thats how I roll. I had one of these every morning for 6 months when I was on mah diet, works wonders! And tastes almost like a fake desert
  • Soy milk isn't as lame as it might sound. It actually sits better for some people then the real thing and tastes pretty good.
  • What's wrong with soymilk? I haven't had regular milk since I was in middle school... tastes too thick and mucus-y for me.
  • You're all sick.
  • Muscle Milk makes a rootbeer protein powder that turns any shake into a kick ass delight.

  • You guys are awesome, for the record. I plan on getting a stellar smoothie this weekend and keeping you all in my heart.

Okay, that sounds queer, but, you get my point.

Whatever it is, it tastes fantastic. I will try yours though.

That's why you can't buy your fruit in the corner Korean delis, or even regular Park Slope supermarkets. Their prices are absurd, if you buy stuff there of course you're not going to save any money.

Get everything from Pathmark or Costco (especially when it's on sale, stock up), or another option for fresh fruit is the Hasidic Jewish or Chinese places on McDonald Ave or Ft. Hamilton Parkway. I buy lots of blueberries/blackberries there and freeze them. It shouldn't come out to much more than $1 per drink.
  • The frozen berries from TJs rule.
