Cornelius - new bar on Vandy

Damn , I was just reading the desert menu and they got banana bread pudding with vanilla ice-cream!
That sounds really good.
Next time!! =P~ -

That is just a travesty.
Don't be jealous. :x
Seriously , I don't like my meat raw or bleeding. I prefer well done to almost burnt. Yum.
-
Sorry, Em, but I have to agree with Voodoo on this one. Anyone want to review the burger where it didn't have the texture of a hockey puck?
Well done? Gah! -
Mine was medium rare.... to each their own.
-
So I went to this bar last night.
Atmosphere was great and everyone seemed friendly.
Ordered the burger and pulled pork, both were alright. I
think the farm's burger is probably better.
The big problem i had with this place was the beer.
I'm a beer nerd and know how much beer costs. I was
pleasantly surprised to see they had goose island bourbon
county stout on tap. i asked the bartender how much it was
($8) and said to myself, "that's pretty reasonable". You can get a
bottle of it around town at different bars for around 8 - 13, or
at whole foods for like 6.
When she brought the beer to the table
it was in a wine glass, half full. I asked her if all their beers were served
in a wine glass and she said it was cause this beer was "rich and sweet".
Now, this beer is kinda crazy tasting, but half a wine glass is around 6 oz, half a bottle of beer. This means the real price of the beer is around $16 compared to other bars.
If they're going to serve you a tiny amount of beer, they should at
least tell you what you're getting "it's $8 but it's a tasting serving" or something. -
was there last night as well...
had a hudson valley vodka on the rocks, the drink was filled up maybe
about a half way up, and that was including the ice.. $8
friend had a havana cocktail in a martini glass. $10.
18 plus 1.51 tax. do they charge tax if you don't order from the bar?
22 bucks for 2 drinks...
kinda pricey. maybe northern vanderbilt can support two bars that average $10+ for drinks..but in this economy maybe not.. -
Well done? ouch. Oh well, everyone has their own tastes. I prefer medium-rare or medium. Yes, the burger was definitely smaller when I went, and overcooked (like in the photo above).
The drinks definitely can be overpriced, I think it depends on what you order. They measure all of their pours rather carefully so unfortunately the heavy pours just don't happen, which disappoints the scotch drinker in me. Were all of the beers poured into "wine glasses" or just some? When I was there I saw pint glasses... -

So I stopped by on Friday night at 12:30 am when I got off of work and the kitchen was closed, so that "kitchen open until 2 every night" thing doesn't seem to be a reality. We wound up going to Barrette instead. -
Last time I was there people next to me ate at 1.30am. Maybe they play it by ear.
-
I went on Friday night as well. I had the godmother and my fiance had the rougue gin. For $18 for both I thought it was fine - cheaper than weather-up for sure. (although maybe its just me being stupid since we spent last weekend at the Brandy Library and it was like $100 a round out there...)
I am a huge beer snob as well and while i agree if they put their tapped beers into such small portions, they should tell you, i didn't even see the taps ... but their bottled prices were very good in my opinion. golden draak for $10 was unheard of even in the middle-of-no-where-college-town i lived in for 4 years.
we got there around 12:15 and people were eating, but we didn't order any food.
i think it's a great addition to the neighborhood. -
Yeah, I don't doubt that the kitchen is sometimes open until 2. But that's not the same as open until 2 every night, and it was definitely not open at 12:30 on Friday.
-
I went on Friday night for the first time and had a great time -- just a couple drinks at the bar. I don't think the beer glasses are smaller (maybe 20 oz), it's just that optical illusion caused by the thickness of the glass. More importantly all 5 of their tap beers are rare. Couple next to me ordered a chicken dish and a burger and it smelled amazing. I'll be back.
Y'all haters, man... tough crowd. -

Don't get me wrong- I love Cornelius. I was just disappointed that their kitchen wasn't open as late as I had heard it would be, especially since the food has been really tasty so far.

Join us for the pub crawl this Saturday- Cornelius is the first stop! -
Went there tonight with a friend. The atmosphere was nice, but how different is it really from Noona? The drinks are WAY overpriced. I got a vodka gimlet there (which wasn't that great) for $11 and another one at Barrette, which was just as good for $7! Had some food there which was eh. My friend had some $10 wine which was good, but again, probably overpriced. I won't go back there. It's just not worth it. Who the hell has that kind of cash to blow in this economy?
-
Just want to mention that i stopped by the farm tonight. They have the bourbon county stout in bottle form for $10. way better deal
-
had our second trip to cornelius last night, and i gotta say, the thrill is fading. had the mandarin basil cocktail, which was pretty damn enh for $10. definitely orangey, but no basil flavor to speak of, and plenty of ice.
had the burger both times, medium rare. first time the fry portion was a bit small but the burger quite good. this time fry portion was huge but more greasy than crispy and the burger itself was nothing to brag about. -
Subject: CORNELIUS: A+
Cornelius is a great addition to Vanderbilt Avenue. Yummy food, killer cocktails and a chillax scene. Makes for a great starting point on a Pub Crawl up the block.

Dude- shilling for your blog rather than promoting the restaurant is like, not cool. Don't think we can't see that.

Thanks for the review and glad that you enjoyed Cornelius. Did you go recently? They have since revamped the fries, in my opinion, for the better.
-
in defense of outaboutbrooklyn, that was not a shill. A shill would have been "check out this great blog and this great review..." Good luck with the blog.

Finally decided to try this place out with my girl last Saturday. The verdict? The food was interesting and the atmosphere was chill. Just wanted to grab some drinks but since the bar was full we decided to sit at a table. After two beers and smelling and seeing the grub we decided to just order a few little plates. We got a small cheese plate and some fried veggies. I was weirded out by the concept on these, but our waitress told us they were good and they indeed were. I thought the music was a bit too loud but whatever. This is a good place for cocktails and I would like to go back to this place, but this economy may not allow me too.......
-
I finally ate at cornelious. I didn't see the burger before but I found it small still even though they made it bigger. It was tasty but nothing to WOW about.
I had the mac&cheese and even though they were good, the portion was really small, more like an appetizer than a main dish.
I guess I will keep going to Cafe Dumont in Williamsburg... -
May 16, 2013:
Heads up!
Cornelius may soon close.
My sources inform me that an entity has applied for a full liquor lic for this site.
Entities often apply for an alc lic before finalizing the purchase of a site to ensure that it would be feasible/ profitable. If they get the permit, they close the deal....
-
But where will I eat cheap oysters?
I love watching the sunset from a front seat, with a plate full of oysters and a pint of beer.
-
Bearded Lady on Washington, though it's facing the wrong direction to watch the sun set.
-
Chuko is setting up another shop there

Nice work foolio!
....I was about 8 days ahead of fully scooping Eater, but I lacked the name of the entity that would be going in the space.
Must. Try. Harder.
Must. Get. Even. Better. Sources.
-
hehe you seem pretty well informed, whynot. your next mission can be who will replace beny's delice on vanderbilt. i hear they are closing up shop. i also spotted some people with keys going into wink, and none of them were the owner of wink.
-
If Beny's Delice is leaving, I don't think many people will miss it. It wasn't there very long.
I am pleased that Chuko is expanding. I hope it will result in it having shorter lines.
mmm, ramen.
