Knit Till You Drop — Brooklynian

Knit Till You Drop

Hello Yarnies,

In my recent travels I found that you can bring all knit/crochet tools on a plane except for scissors over 3" long. I also found that you can't take gun powder in your hand carry but you can pack it in your suitcase. Who makes this stuff up? Can I bring my spear gun with me? Which Japanese toy will be confiscated on board? For this and more go to:

In the mean time, pick up your Strickennadeln und Wollegarn and knit.

  • It's nice to see you back!

My quarter is just winding down and I have lots of projects and stuff. Depending on the progress I make before then, I might see you on the 19th. I'll keep my nose to the grindstone!
  • So, I've recently taken up crocheting. Is it really as hard as my book makes it out to be? I've started with black yarn which is probably not the best idea. Any pointers. I can get the initial chain but I'm having a hell of a time adding a 2nd one to it....

    Any pointers?

    Hey EmilyM,

Thanks, good to be back in Brooklyn as always. Still working of the jet lag and stuff. Hope to see you on the 19th, I'll have swift/widner on hand either way, got a lot fo sale stuff I have to store away myself. How's school going?

    amyskittysitting,

Hmm, not so good a the crochet myself, Appolonia666? You there with some advice? Try to make it to Maha's tomorrow, Veronica is a wiz at that. What are you making?
  • oh gosh. I'm going to be in miami the weekend after the knit in at freddy's visiting a newborn and I MUST FINISH this damn hat and blanket I started 6 months ago (basically, I cast them on. I'm SO FRICKING lazy). so, I'm thinking I need to simplify patterns and get to work. I can probably handle the pattern simplification on my own (have already thought it through, really) but I really need to find 'excuses' to knit. so HORRAY.
someone kick my ass if I don't show up at the start and stay til 11 p.m. or something. thanks.

    I don't know of any Knit-Dominatrix services, but I'll ask around : )

Have you ever done that thing with a huge needle called Broomstick lace?

Its a crochet thing. This goes by really quickly, you can probably make a baby blanket in less than 20 hours. Or you can just go the park and steal one from an unsuspecting stroller when no one is looking. You can distract the parents by yelling "No my child is smarter than yours!"

I'm not really aiming for a finished product yet, just trying to get the stitches down. My boyfriend picked up a kit from the general store in Columbia Heights for me. I'm prone to get angry at the book that came with it but I could just not understand the directions... One of these days! Is knitting, in general, easier?
  • I don't know if knitting is easier, but I learned last summer entirely by looking at the videos at knittinghelp.com. If there were a similar crochet site it would probably help you a lot.

School's going well! I have given notice at my job so will be doing it full-time next quarter. Currently I am doing it sort of 2/3s time while working, so I will be a lot less crazed starting in April. :)
  • Subject: Project Ideas

    Hello Yarnies,

Just a reminder for all y'all that bought all those skeens of "sale yarn". I'm bringing down two swifts and two wool winders for Knit In at Freddy's. For those not in the know, these are they windy, stretchy yarn tool things. I have a ton of stuff to wind and put away into my "I'll get to that soon" box. Swift, wind, have a beer, unwind.

    The Knit In at Freddy's
    Sunday, March 19
from 5:30 until the Pub Quiz kicks us out.

Also the Knit.1, Vogues cool knitting mag, is looking for some creative ideas for the Fall 2006 issue. Knit.1 writes:

    <START>
The TV issue: Themes are more about the titles, rather
than about specific TV shows. So here it goes (below).

    1) BASIC CABLE: cool ideas which use cables...
    2) AFTERSCHOOL SPECIAL: Geek Chic
    3) MASTERPIECE THEATER: Gothish fashion
    4) RERUNS: "lost and found" story taking old stuff and making it new....
    5) COUCH POTATO: Home dec for the the couch: pillows, remote control cozies, throws, slippers etc.
    6) GAME SHOW: Cool stuff that uses games....

I AM ALSO IN NEED OF ARTICLE IDEAS:
Some ideas were Fiber Optics: a review of different types of yarn...
    that's about it.
    <END>

Frank, your remote control cozy idea is right on the money.

It's not a contest its an exhibition, they are just looking for new, creative ideas that are kinda fun, hip, geeky..etc. I have this idea that's sorta sock monkey but bigger, it's a sweater gorilla. I'm sure you can do better than that. If you have any ideas I'll forward them to Knit.1 with your name and contact info. So write to me at: [email protected]

    Cheers, That Yarn Guy
  • Aww, Yarn Guy, you're the best!

I'm not knitting at the moment but once I get through the insanity of moving I hope to start coming by again. Right now all my yarn is being used to pad breakables. :)

No, INTO the hood! I've been a wannabe all this time, but now I'm headed to Bergen Street.
  • Subject: Welcome

Bergen? Coolness apollonia666, you struck gold! The hood is still cool but it's slowly becoming the horn-rimmed Ghetto.
