Do comfortable futons exist? — Brooklynian

Do comfortable futons exist?

I mean for sleeping on every night.

Are any of them really comfortable?

  • Only if you have a really thick mattress on it.

Yes. At least for short term sleeping. Not sure about long term.

We have one with wood slats instead of the tiny metal bars plus an extra thick mattress and tons of guests have slept on it and every one says that it was really comfortable. And many of theses are folks I trust to tell us it sucked.

It's okay as a couch but not as squishy as I like my couches, though that's part of what makes it a good bed. Got ours at the futon place on Flatbush near Burrito Bar/Duane Reade.
  • I have one that I sleep on when I've been bad. You need to rotate them or shake them up frequently. It's a queen size and it weighs a lot, especially after a couple of years worth of dead bed bugs. I think the burlap blankets are more uncomfortable.
  • I had one that was very comfortable, compared to the one I had before it, which was a cotton mat to work out karmic debt through physical suffering, according to my squeeze from that era.
Then I sprung for a really good mattress, and never looked back.

I forget what kind was the more comfortable kind of futon, maybe foam layered in with the cotton...it was certainly way better than the cheap mattress I could have afforded at the time.
  • I think it depends on what you like. I like a firm mattress so a futon works well. The mattress needs to be quality - mine is a White Lotus.
