African stereotype about white women
http://www.modernghana.com/lifestyle/696/16/for-love-or-green-card-the-relationship-between-af.html
It was my last week in Kenya and I was just about to be shipped off to Australia. There I was, casually sauntering through Carnivore trying to convince older women that I still wasn't being breast fed. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a friend of mine, drunker than a depressed brewery worker, come staggering down. He staggered directly to me, plopped his hand on my shoulder and delivered a monologue that I will probably never forger until the day I die. I paraphrase:
“You guy as you ship over, remember something….(dramatic pause) Those Western women love black d***. These chicks wait at the airport with signs just chilling for the next black dude to step off the plane..(At this point, I drifted off into fantasy land imagining the possibilities of what he had just told me)”
You can't even imagine what that did to me. As I stepped on that Kenya Airways plane, I had a pep in my step and I wasn't looking back. And then I arrived!!!
So What Do I Know Five Years Later?
I am glad you asked. I have been in boarding school in the country, Christian schools, public schools, different cities, different states and different Universities. I have hung out with Kenyans, Ghanaians, Zims, Tswanas, Ugandans, Asians, Indians, Caucasians the whole shebang (btw what type of word is shebang? who came up with a word like shebang?).
My observation is pretty simple. African men being mighty conquerors who head on over to Western countries and can seduce any Western woman they want because they all swoon over him: by and large that's a myth!
There are in general five types of Western women who get jungle fever for African men:
1) Girls with low self esteem
2) Girls who are 'kilogramically challenged' aka a tad bit overweight
3) Girls with drug problems
4) Girls who wanna 'be down' (think double-entendres here)
5) Girls who watch too much interracial p*rn or spend way too much time in fantasy land

Guess it all depends on how one measures "worth" or worthiness. For me, the article armchair shared is worth about the same as the unrecyclable trash in my garbage (ie if it was a toxic asset the bank was trying to sell me and I was the gov't, I wouldn't buy it). -
It was so full of rank stereotypes I kept hoping it would turn out to be satire or humor except there was nothing remotely funny in it.
Would you have posted this if it was about Asian women?
This was just dumb. -

yes i did, he went to live in Australia, he is from africa. he found out the things his friends told him about white women isn't true. but he formulated his own thoughts in the first part of the story. where he list them by number. -

I find this topic more interesting myself...but that's just me. -
Sex tourism isn't just for men anymore. Women do it.

I might be interested in a discussion of stereotypes from different countries, but I'm not terribly interested in hearing from someone who actually believes in these garbage stereotypes, which this guy clearly does. -

a while back there was a news article(might be nytimes) some where about old white women from europe and america going to africa for sex tourism. -

8. Middle class Jewish girls rebelling against something their grandfathers said in 1989.

Don't mind these hammerheads, armchair, I for one enjoyed the article. Myself, having been around the world, often wonder about women (especially from relatively homogeneous countries) who seek out men of another race just a little too enthusiastically. This guy makes some good points about that.
It may be that in Park Slope, everyone is a beautiful, gifted, individual snowflake who was born completely independent of all natural pressures, but in the real world the beauty of stereotypes is that more often than not they hold correct.
Like Nas said: "Lord, lord, ya'll.. what I'm gon' do.. the shit is all true." -

That's a rude thing to write. -
Not rude when it is true.
My middle class Jewish cousin went out with a guy from Kenya for 3 years. She mentioned to me that part of her attraction for him was that her grandfathers hated the fact that the was black.
The truth is never rude, the truth just is. Get over it. -

One anecdote (and we have no way of knowing whether this event, and the reason for it, actually occurred) is not equivalent to truth; one cannot generalize about an entire class of people based on one, possibly idiosyncratic, example. There is no "truth" to be had here, but there is a lot of rudeness.

It is extremely rude to write that someone should "get over it." -
We travel to Eastern Europe each year and stay about 6 months each time. So we see so much of the culture through tv, thru friends, and of course touring around and being part of the daily life. There are relatively few miniorities but the ones that are there are totally welcomed and respected, and maybe even a little revered. Every country is different in how we perceive people, and that's what makes us all unique.
-
Witch,
It is rude for you to say I am rude and it is rude of you to suggest that my "anecdote" is not true. You are going to have to get over both counts.
My guess is that your post and your anger is stemming from an earlier "discussion" we had in which you were out of line and I put you in your place.
Time for you to stop grinding the ole axe Witchy. Move on and get over it. -
I will add a little funny story about racial perceptions.
I grew up in Gowanus and went to public school. In all my schools the majority of students (70-80%) were African American. I remember in the 5th grade 2 of my friends (who were African American) came to stay at my house after school. When my mother came home from work she was angry at me for something that happened with my sister and we got into an argument in front of my friends. I said something fresh to her and she backsmacked me on my mouth. As pissed as my mother and I were at each other it was overshadowed by the look on my 2 friends' faces. They looked panic stricken and their eyes were bulging - I thought they were worried about me and I said don't worry I'm okay to which they said "I know you are okay but I thought white people don't hit their kids". My sister and I both laughed hysterically and told them "really, have them come meet our mother". -

Stacey,
That is a really funny story. I remember a friend of mine when I was 7 or 8 saying to my mother, "I didn't know Jews were so nice."
I saw Tracy Morgan last night. A lot of his act dealt with race issues. It was very interesting to see what made black people laugh, what made white people laugh and what made everyone laugh.
I was really impressed with his act, but he actually broke out some pretty old and stale jokes too. He did the ole “white people can’t dance thing.” I thought it was very tired, but the black people in the audience almost died laughing. Shows what I know. -

That's funny, I also have heard that stereotype many times from people around the country. It seems like us white kids who grew up in NYC seem to have been raised in the "Old World" way, since every white kid I knew from the neighborhood used to feel the wrath (some more than others of course). Probably because we grew up in households that still had a somewhat strong ethnic identity (Irish, Italian, Puerto Rican, etc.) and with that came the Old World upbringing.

What's worse, your grandmother is supposed to be the one you run to for sympathy after your mother whips your ass. Since my grandmother is an immigrant, she used to be like "Is that all she did to you?? If I were her, I woulda gave it to ya even worse!!"

I wonder if some on this thread have ever heard of the book "A Confederacy of Dunces"? (Not saying that book has any relation to this topic, just something about a meeting of the minds on this thread that brought the title to mind.)

Your anecdote was cute Stacey. There's a lot of talk back and forth on this board about being "real" or keeping it real, so it's always a pleasure for me to hear what I consider a real voice coming through. Even the dunces can hear it. -

When all else fails, call the natives and minorities "dunces" and you will be sure to garner a few nasal laughs from the Park Slope peanut gallery every time. Bravo, "flo."

I also like how you dropped in a comment about how you find a completely unrelated article (that you undoubtedly dug up just for purposes of this thread) about water issues in Ghana "more interesting" than armchair's article; way to show how highbrow, intellectual and culturally informed you are, flo!
=D>
Unfortunately, none among us "dunces" are intelligent enough to grasp the extent of your worldliness.
