Cable/Internet Problems - Advice Appreciated. Thanks!
Hi gang. I'm relatively new to the Slope (and NYC), and would appreciate some advice. My Time Warner cable, both the TV and the internet, went completely out this week for about 3.5 days (just went back on this evening). My questions are as follows (I am mainly concerned with the internet):
1 - Did anyone else have this problem? (I live in Slope/Gowanus around Union + 4th) And does this happen a lot? This is pretty unacceptable, as I work for a web-based company from my apt. and am reliant on having working, reasonably fast internet for my job. Crapping out for most of a work week is just not ok. TWC also misinformed me about when it would be working again, which caused more problems for me. Basically this week sucked.
2 - This is what I would appreciate some help with - What other options do I have available for internet?. Does anyone have experience with DISH network satellite internet? I have not heard great things about speed or reliability with satellite internet, or with DSL for that matter. Does anyone feel otherwise? Moreover, are there any better options available? Please advise.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey there-I also have TW cable and internet, and I didn't experience any outages. I live on PPW and 17th.
I'm probably not the best to help you out with the second portion, I'm sorry. -
Mine just went out tonight, called twc and they couldn't get it working.
-
basically, you are stuck with time warner until verizon fios comes into the are, which should be around 2525.
-
My internet (TWC) inexplicably went out yesterday too. I live near 20th st. tho. Someone came out this morning and re-routed the cable/internet lines and replaced our modem. Part of the excuse I was given was that somehow my neighbor and I were wired so that we were splitting the same internet + cable connections/something somewhere was amiss with the wiring.
When dealing with TWC I always throw in "I work from home, this is part of my livelihood, etc. etc." Also remember to call in about a prorated bill when you have service outages lasting longer than 3 hours (I think it's 3, you should double check). -
I also use them for my business.
had twc in the slope for two years... the last year has been filled with intermittent outages, service calls, replaced lines, couplers, etc. (common theme: lo-signal) ...
yet, everytime, they propose a unique theory... yesterday they came to replace the modem (they didn't) and spent 1 hour climbing all over the building trying to find a problem. Finally, the tech said it was because they are doing a lot of upgrades in the area ... my translation: park slope has extremely dense home internet users per capita (and growing) and twc can't handle the load. So, when signing up with twc, expect to buy into an outdated and slowly crumbling infrastructure ... welcome to nyc. -
In addition, Park Slopers love to “borrow” the internet connection from their neighbors who pay for it. If you are using wireless, make sure that some sloper isn’t leaching off your line.
It is possible that your modem is dead. You may need a new one. A tech can figure that out. -
Can any of the long-term PS residents confirm this - it wasn't always TWC serving Park Slope?
The reason I ask is that I had a tech come out about a year ago due to intermittent problems - turns out that the splitters in my backyard were ancient, and shorting out every time it rained - the wires themselves weren't much better. The tech mentioned that a lot of the house-to-house infrastructure was really quite old, and installed by a different company decades ago. Needless to say, he didn't replace the wiring, since the signal improved enough once the splitters were replaced.
Might well be that TWC & its' techs are playing the 'good enough' game when it comes to fixing exterior wiring issues. -
Knock on wood, but I've had decent service with TWC. The freezing is becoming an issue but I never have severe outages.
-
I have lived here for almost 22 years and the only cable company ever here was TWC.
-
I've had cable since it became available in Park Slope... I had waited anxiously for that day. It was always TWC (but was known as "Warner Cable" prior to the merger of Time Inc and Warner Communications (for whom I worked at the time)).
TWC may have subcontracted the wiring to a different company... but no other company ever had the cable franchise here. -
Verizon DSL has been pretty reliable though I assume not as a fast as cable. I also have a free wireless signal (no idea who it belongs to) I use in case of emergencies.
-
Ah, do you remember waiting for cable to come to Park Slope booklaw? I remember others areas of Brooklyn getting it first, friends in Sunset Park had cable before we did-we couldn't wait for it to come to the Slope. I remember them tearing up the street in front of my house to lay the cables and how because of that, we got our first cat-LOL! ah, good times, good times!
We also had cable from the minute it was available here. -
I use Verizon DSL which is so amazingly reliable. My bf has TWC and the outages are just awful. I work at home and can't afford that - I'll sacrifice a bit of speed for a reliable connection.
I have TWC for TV, however (because what else is there), and I will say that wiring and external conditions are just freaking horrific. There are wires DANGLING from the outside of my building. Squirrels eat through the wires frequently. And they often give the wrong cable boxes for your TV. It's a wretched service. -
We had endless problems with TWC (constant outages, slowdowns, etc). In the end we got DirecTV and DSL and haven't had a single problem with either (it's been about 16 months now). Sure DSL is a little slower, but it's also a dedicated line, so the speed is consistent. With TWC sometimes my internet would be around 10mb, most of the time though it was around 4mb, sometimes it dropped below 1mb. I find a consistent 3mb from DSL to result in a better overall experience.

that's funny because we had Verizon DSL for about 4 years and it went out constantly! So, we switched to TWC last year, I am not much happier with them.

Thanks guys. It sounds like Verizon DSL may be worth looking into, if it's more reliable. 3 mb isn't bad at all, if it's really that consistent. But my understanding was that DSL speed varied greatly depending on how overloaded the network is. Do I have this ass-backward?
Yeah, the cable wires are just thrown all over the place on the front and back of my building, blowing in the wind. At first, I was impressed that the installation was so fast, but now that I realize he just checked a bunch of loose wire over the roof it's pretty absurd. I can't believe it isn't violating all kinds of building codes.. Anyway, I'm pretty sure this was a network problem, rather than a wiring problem, but if that became an issue that would have to be the end of TWC for me. Ridiculous.
Anyone have a good idea of when FIOS will be available? I don't know much about it, but the very least, some more competition would be good. -
FiOS won't be available in PS for maybe 3-5 years.
AND DSL speed is just like cable speed. If the network is overloaded, things slow down.
My TWC cable/internet has been very reliable, and when it wasn't I bitched to the city's department in charge of cable franchises and got 2 months of free service.
You can contact either company and see what their deals are for getting the highest speed possible at the least cost. Remember, whether it's cable/DSL/fiber, they're all varied forms of wire/fiber strung on poles, buried in conduits under streets and so on. When you get your service, insist that the wires be in places where YOU want them, not thrown over a roof and so forth. -
DSL is not like cable, DSL is a dedicated connection to the network, so your speed is always the same. Cable is a shared connection, so the speed can depend on the number and activity level of your neighbors.
-
Just wondered if anyone had ever upgraded their class of service on either cable or DSL to business and found that that made any difference

This hasn't been true for a long time. Your connection to your Cable Company is now a private connection just like DSL, and just like Cable if the upstream connection that your provider is paying for is swamped your DSL will slow down too.
I've noticed some very bad slow downs weeknights recently with TWC and roadrunner, I'm going to call and have them cut me over to Earthlink and see if that makes a difference.
I'm frightened by the idea of paying more for roadrunner that is 50% faster when I end up with a max speed that is under 1mbps 50% isn't all that much.
Roadrunner seems to do some connection speed shaping. By this I mean initial connections still come in very fast (20mbps) for the first second or two, this allows normal web browsing to still be very fast, as soon as you start a download though you can watch the bandwidth that connection has drop very quickly. Interestingly you can often open a handful of connections and get the same speed on each before they all start slowing down. -

Are you sure about that? I run speed tests on my lines fairly frequently (once every month or so) and I've never seen my DSL speed deviate at all (not a bit, it's literally always exactly the same), nor do I notice any difference in network speed. On TWC, as I said, I would get different speeds every time I tested, ranging from 10mb (never higher, it was clearly capped at that) and as low as 750kb, certain times of day would consistently test higher than others. I suppose that could be attributed to the basic network backbone of TWC, but if that's the case they have some very serious issues, and at the end of the day results in the same thing; Verizon provides me with extremely consistent network access, while TWC was notably unreliable.

(I'll note that it's possible, even likely, that what I experience could be in direct contrast with what others experience. Oddities of wiring, etc. can result in drastically different experiences for different locations, I'm just saying that if you're unhappy with one service, there is the possibility that the other may serve your needs better. Personally I hated TWC for their poor service and even worse technicians (as noted above and in other similar threads), but I'm sure Verizon can be just as bad. I've simply not had to deal with their service department a single time in the 16 months I've been a customer) -
We live in Boerum Hill and our TWC service has been horrible lately. We've had complete cable outages (TV and Internet) starting back in November. The longest was about 8 hours the day after Thanksgiving. We haven't had any total outages in recent weeks, but the Internet service has been slow as molasses. We got a new router and a new modem, but the problem persists. It tends to be particularly bad in the evening.
I have DSL at work and the service has been consistent. Obviously not as fast as cable at its best, but at least I can play Youtube videos! I don't know what's going on with TWC but this is the spottiest service we've had in 7 years. We were assured by TWC that the new modem would help, but it hasn't made much of a difference. -
I am mystified by the problems others are reporting about TWC. We have not had outages, slowdowns, or any other problems with internet or cable tv, other than DVR boxes and remote control units needing to be periodically replaced.
-
Booklaw, I'm with you...and I've actually found that customer service has significantly improved since Fios is coming

It's true that when you have dsl your pair of copper wires goes directly to verizon, while with cable you're sharing the copper back to the CO. However the modern cable modem protocols allocate space in such a way that it's not the wire back to the CO that causes delays anymore (this was certainly the case with early cable modems) and each cable modem connected has reserved bandwidth. DSL is rock solid in the slope since most people just bundle their cable modem with their cable tv (this is even more common now since a lot of us don't have land lines at all). In manhattan however, esp. at businesses there are lots of DSL slowdowns, inauguration day was a great example since so many people were trying to stream the inauguration response times and bandwidth dropped considerably at our office.

Anyway hulu and other high bandwidth demands have drastically increased the bandwidth that most people use in a very quick time, so it's not at all surprising that cable companies have been caught off guard and are maxing out their backbones. -
TWC is a scamp. 2 yrs ago I aksed for an additional box ofr my bedroon. For 2 years I have to disconnect the cable to view DVD...
Took trouble shooting with a smart tech who said I have to swap the box... wrong box was used.
TWC is charging me $40.00 to rectify their error. The DVD player was there before the box.
I am having snow on my TV & freezing they are telling me I need a new TV... they pulled that crap on me yeras ago... I did not need a new TV... the problem was theirs.
Howdy, Stranger!
