Petland Vet My Pet for routine shots? — Brooklynian

Petland Vet My Pet for routine shots?

Anyone ever used this service? The furry one needs a bordetella booster and this seems like a way to save some $ and the trek to where her vet is. I'm just wondering if it is safe, etc. I obviously don't want to take unnecessary risks with her health, but the kennel cough shot seems like a pretty routine thing...I mean, humans get flu shots at the drug store, right? :?

They're setting up at the Petland on 5th Ave tomorrow from 11-1 for anyone in need. http://www.petlanddiscounts.com/VetServices.asp

  • I've gotten vaccinations for my puppy at PetCo in the city through a similar organization. He was totally fine. They all use the same stuff I think. I say go for it and save yourself some cash :-)
  • I think it's probably safe. Lots of daycares will do it on site if your dog's is expired and you want to board him/her.

But, if you never leave your dog at a daycare or anywhere that requires the 6 mo booster, and the dog is young and healthy, you should do some online reading to decide if you want to even worry with it. Since we're not boarding our dog, we just skip the 6 mo booster and he's been fine. No use in giving unnecessary shots.
  • You're right - I thought about it and decided against getting her shot. I don't put her in daycare anymore after a series of nasty stomach viruses (VERG got like $600 from me after the last one, ack). I was going to have her get the booster just in case I changed my mind about the daycare or in case I need to leave town on short notice in the next 6 months, but...meh, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. I also thought twice about not getting her the shot because she had kennel cough when I got her (she did some time in the pound) and it was awful, but...it isn't like she's super likely to get it again from her strolls down the neighborhood streets. Thanks for the reminder on why I should think twice before getting her vaccinated.
  • Shelters, no matter how clean or well-kept, will always have dogs with kennel cough. Many of the dogs have been malnourished, have other illnesses, and are stressed and so just prone to getting sick from it. Once the same dog is out of that environment and well cared for, I think they are much less likely to get it unless they spend a lot of time in a place like a daycare.

I do think a lot of the daycares around here will offer the shot on premises if you need it.
