Bergen Bagels?

Just because there are differing opinions doesn't mean that there isn't a correct one. Regardless of where you live, BH bagels are better frozen than Bergen's are fresh. I haven't tried the coop ones yet, so I'll leave those out of the debate for now. If you're not willing to go a little further for real bagels, you can also get BH bagels at Prospect Perk (although like all baked goods, they are better fresh out of the oven).
Carnivore, you've proven my point. I too am passionate about some things, just not this one. -

What is it about bagel stores are fake French names? Is there some sort of bagel <->France connection that I'm not in on?

I've never had better than from Kossar's on Delancy (yes, in Manhattan). -
Yes the Delancy one is awesome - but the best bialy I've ever had was on Nostrand off Avenue Y at Hot Bagels, not that I'll be going there anytime soon. Around here La Bagel Delight's bialy is not half bad.

I agree that Kossar's are excellent, but you should really try the ones from Coney Island Bialys and Bagels. They are truly superb, plus you can keep your business in Brooklyn. -
Subject: Bagel baking techniques
I always thought bagels were truly bagels only because they were cooked in boiling water and anything baked was considered bread -
They're supposed to boiled, then baked.

one other thing worth noting about bergen bagels, especially if you live "on the other side" and don't like trekking all the way to Flatbush in your PJs on a Sunday morning...
THEY DELIVER! -
oddly, today i decided to give b. bagels a second shot... went there and ordered the same thing they charged me $2.70 for last week, and today it was $2.45.
wtf? -
Sliding scale?
Try dressing down next time... :P -

What did you order? I'll order the same and see how much they charge me.

just saw the new link to this (somehow missed it when it was active) and was surprised to find that no one had mentioned the absolute best bagels in the neighborhood or, in the discussion on freezing, the method i use, so i am compelled to add to the bagel babble.
1. the best bagels, by far, in the area (and i'm stretching "the area" a bit to include windsor terrace) are terrace bagels on ppw and 16th st. imo, as good as, if not better than, h and h.
granted, that's a hike if you need a bagel that morning. so i try to get over there now and then, get a dozen, and freeze them. which brings me to point no. 2.
2. take the fresh bagels home asap, slice them, double bag them, and close with a wire fastener, squeezing as much air as possible out of the bag first.
when you're ready for your morning bagel, they're already sliced (occasionally they still stick together, but they can easily be pried apart with a dinner knife) and go directly from freezer to toaster.
not fresh, but pretty close.
that said, if you need one nearby, bergen is certainly the closest best. -

Yes, yes, yes... a million times, yes! Terrace Bagels is the #1 reason that I miss living in Windsor Terrace. I still trek over there every few weeks.
... which brings me to my thankfulness at this thread being revived! My other half and I are moving to PH in just over a week. Of course, we're only moving from the South Slope, but it's still a bit unfamiliar to me.
So... Bergen Bagels is the way to go for PH-local trips? -
Have any of the Terrace Bagel fans also tried Bagel Hole (or have any of the Bagel Hole fans tried Terrace)? This sounds like a head-to-head comparison that has to be made.

For the next 8 days, I live literally around the corner from Bagel Hole. I like Bagel Hole, but I like Terrace Bagels better. Both places are definitely in the "smaller and chewy" genre. I'd wager that Terrace's bagels are a wee bit bigger, but not by much - certainly not one of the "big and fluffy" bagels by any stretch of the imagination!

the corner store on 5th and dean sells H&H bagels for .75 cents per
a better deal and a better bagel than bergen by far, and only about two blocks away -

in any case, I'm trying to remember the last time I ate a bagel in this nabe and ... I think I've had one, ever, and it was from the perk. whoops. -

Those are actually Bagel Hole bagels. -

Agree 110%. When I go to visit my mother in Florida I have to bring a dozen of these bagels on the plane for her. (I had to put my foot down with the lox though
). -

depends who you order from... & maybe how much you smile?
wtf?
once my roommate got charged $7 something for a tofu bagel & o.j. so FUNNY..
then there was this one time i went in and one of the guys said to me, "i like your tacos"....
***no worries though, he meant tattoos & the matter was cleared up quickly indeed!! :P -

yes, i've tried the hole--not bad, but a definite step down from terrace imo.
nearly ecstatic, however, to hear from heit about h & h availability at 5th and dean, to know there's an alternative to bergen b's when i'm not up for schlepping to windsor terrace. any idea if they're fresh daily?
not sure about your ping-ponging cats though. i can't decide if they're funny enough that they're no longer annoying or annoying enough that they're no longer funny. good rally though. -

to me it's a perfect icon/metaphor for this board, and yes, message boards in general (funny side note, one of my other favorite boards just shut down permanently, displaying us this message:
http://tinyurl.com/7wr9x
I like to change them tho, so when I'm due to post again in March, I'll probably have a new one
but good question about the freshness, I've gone down there several days in the last couple months, mostly in the afternoon, to grab one and they've been fresh enough - I think I might make the trip to terrace today though, after all the testimonial in this thread -
OK, I finally got on my bike and picked up a dozen of Terrace Bagels' finest. I have to admit, the bagels are excellent. I still think Bagel Hole bagels are better, but it's close. Terrace Bagels are a little bigger than I think is optimal for the best crust to inside ratio, although they do sell "mini-bagels" that I plan to try next time. Both are clearly superior to the over-sugared H&H bagels.
