i was there on monday night and they were out of 1/4 of their menu...by the time my wilted house salad arrived (a bowl of romaine, three tan tomatoes, and a slice of cucumber) which i sent back before i would pay $7)...they were out of 1/2 of the menu. after we paid our bill i overheard the manager tell his staff they were closing the kitchen?
it was 7.45pm?
i guess it was a rough weekend. -
yeah, I think they are still working out the kinks in a big way, hopefully they will get it right.
When I went we ordered the shrimp cocktail to start and waited forever. When we were finally able to grab our server and ask for it, he walked to the raw bar and brought it right over, I think it had been sitting there for some time as it doesn't take any work to put a few shrimp in a bowl with some cocktail sauce.
We then proceeded to wait another 30 minutes for him to bring out an order of mussels and fries and a seafood salad. Another 2 items that take no time to prepare. They brought out the wrong salad but were able to correct it within 2 minutes - the time it takes to put some prepared seafood salad on a bed of letuce. They also forgot the fries that come with the mussels but brought them when asked.
The food was good although the mussels were a very small portion. It is listed as a main course but there was a bowl with a single layer of mussels. I think everyone knows that you need lots of mussels to create a meal as they have so little meat in them. They tasted great, there just weren't enough of them.
I hope they get it right, it's a nice space for a casual meal but it needs some work. -
I've been twice. The first time was a good experience and the second was not. It's certainly not a great bar--if I wanted bottled Guiness I'd go to O'Connor's--and the seafood was of pretty low quality. I like the ambience of the place, but the service isn't that great either.
I'm willing to cut them some slack since it's still relatively new. But if I were going for seafood tonight, I'd be likely to give Brooklyn Fish Camp a try. -
Subject: I know they're new...but seriously...
Had dinner there with the new potential chica and was thoroughly dissapointed with the burger (so I was distracted . It's tiny! What kind of bar serves a tiny burger. They should be ashamed. By this rate i'll be back in the Heights by January. -

walked in, sat down, looked at menu, left. nothing for non-shellfish, non-meat eaters. at a fish place?! harumph. went to fish camp. great meal, but 3-4x the price of the bar food. -
what i have a hard time understanding is how minnow is such a great place. food, service, portions etc. and bar minnow is such a disaster. it's the same kitchen?? look and see for yourself.

Sounds like not much has changed. Bar Minnow has been thoroughly trashed on chowhound.com and deservedly so. I've been there and it sucks.

Subject: great space... and
 THAT IS ABOUT IT. Really --- the food, the service, the price... not so great. -
the following is from my blog which I am now plugging.

Bar Minnow
For the life of me I wish I would stop going back to this place. Every time I go there I’m dissapointed.
The first time I went was in the summer, I’d heard the food was good and I wanted to sit outside after my run. Unfortunately, the corner of 7th Avenue and 9th St is way too congested for that sort of thing. The $20. lobster roll was awful too, but I’m not a big fan of lobster rolls in general.
I went again a few weeks later and had the burger which did nothing special for me and the service was awful. The next time I had their fancy Philly cheese Steak Au Jus. Also unimpressive. I sat inside this time and both me and my friend Sara were weirded out by the way the back dining room is eye level with the sidewalk. I had another crappy burger a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday I had the fried chicken which couldn’t have been any less seasoned.
On the plus side, the fries are good and they’ve started making their own tasty doughnuts. the bar is sizeable and looks like a comfortable enough place to have a drink or two. Unfortunately it’s full of 23year olds boys from Bay Ridge.
Do yourself a favor, if you want similar fare either in or outdoors, go to Dizzy’s up the block. Their burgers rock.
