Moving Back to the Hood! ... ? Nostrand/St Marks — Brooklynian

Moving Back to the Hood! ... ? Nostrand/St Marks

Hey everybody,

I haven't posted in a LONG time. About a year ago I moved out of the Jewish Hospital (699 Classon) due to the management's shady management. Shortly thereafter I was sent to California and subsequently deployed. (I'm in the Marine Corps Reserve).

I'm still in Iraq but the deployment is coming to an end, and my fiance is taking on the apartment hunt alone. She's not from Brooklyn. We're looking at moving into a place on Nostrand btwn St. Marks and Bergen. Any comments on the neighborhood? (To give you my perspective, I grew up in East Flatbush).

Any insight would be appreciated. Glad to see these forums are still kicking!

  • Thanks for what you do for us, dan.h! Okay, so I've lived on St. Marks between Rogers & Nostrand for a year. I can honestly say that I've loved it here. I happen to be moving because I'm getting a roommate & got a SPECTACULAR deal (that can't be passed up!), but living here is great.
That said, the great parts I love: West Indian restaurants (not just because I'm West Indian!), proximity to stations & buses, the tree lined streets (both here & Eastern Pkwy), Brooklyn Museum & cute shops.

You know the deal, crime is crime everywhere. The current economic environment DOES NOT HELP, but don't let people scare you - there's reasonable rent here, community & good food. You'll both be fine... Good luck!!!
  • By the way, don't limit your search. I'm not from Brooklyn either, but tell your fiancee not to be intimidated by brokers, etc. IT'S A RENTERS MARKET!!!!!!
  • Thanks for the reply, bondgirl... and thank you for saying thank you. Definitely a renters' market! We'll keep up on the search. Time to start wheelin and dealin.
  • I can't comment on that stretch of Nostrand, but it's great to hear from you again, dan! I'm so glad to hear you'll be coming home soon.
  • DAN! Yo - you better get in touch with me when you get back here! We gotta grab a few drinks... and I need some help paving the back yard...

Good to see that you're well, keep your head low 'til you get your ass back here and I'll see you then!
  • Well, one of the good points to the neighborhood there is the transportation. It really is an ideal spot since the LIRR Nostrand Ave stop is there and you can walk in either direction on Nostrand and get to a train. The A, C on Fulton or the 3,4 on Eastern Parkway and 2 blocks further on President would be the 2, 5 trains. Multiple bus routes are also within walking distance.

As mentioned earlier, a lot of restaurants that serve the cuisine of the Islands, and also fairly close to the restaurants in Prospect Heights and a lot of cultural institutions in Brooklyn.

Stay safe and know that your service to the country is appreciated.
  • Hey Dan. Congrats on the fiance and coming back home! There are plenty of places available around these parts so don't let your fiance get forced into anything she doesn't love. I used to live on Nostrand and it's very noisy so I'd recommend places on the side streets.

Good luck to you both and thank you for your service!
  • Wait a second! Fiance?! Wha? Congrats!
  • I agree with ladypandora about living on Nostrand. A side street would be better and you'd still get the advantage of living off an avenue that's rarely deserted late at night.

And we're totally doing a Brooklynian event in your honor when you get back!

Definitely! Dan and his fiancee should not have to buy any drinks that night.
  • First thanks for serving our country man. Hope u make it home safe to ur future wife.

Posting from Bergen b/w Nostrand + NYA

Lived in the Alma Realty complex for 2 years.

Over here it's not as hip and parking is a pain in the ass sometimes. But I am splitting a 1 BR w/my gf for $1400 a month all together. 700 sq ft, the place is fucking huge. Not far from the A, never used the 2/5. Neighbors don't bother me as I probably look local but my gf is a Finnish transplant from Greenpoint.... shes still getting used to it

I would say its about the same as the Alma Realty complex w/o the hipness, and with more trees. Can't wait till spring/summer. Plus all my 475 St Marks buddies are in walking distance. All in all I would call it a win; a change but a good one.
  • Subject: I'm the Fiance! lol

    Hey everyone,
    I am Dan's Fiance, Samantha.
I am so excited to move to Brooklyn. I wish he were here looking with me but ..Im dealing.

I had found a place, :( but long story short, lost it. (missed it really)
I found another it is on Argyle btw Caton and Church. Right next to Prospect park.
The place is AMAZING, never thought Id see such a nice place in these buildings. Im going to view it again tomorrow.

Does anyone know how that area is? I feel like it is "up and coming" as Dan puts it.

Thanks for all the input. Nostrand was a big NO, after I went back and looked again.

    ...
  • Hi Samantha-

That's a good area- and definitely getting popular. I wouldn't call it up and coming as I never really saw that area as "down" to begin with. It's nice all around, I think. Go for it! Especially if its as AMAZING as it sounds....
  • Hey Samantha, Don't give up on Crown Heights just yet. I know of a big (really big) two bedroom place that is coming up on April 1st. PM or email me at slopefsbo@gmail for details. It is in your price range, its still close to all of Dan's buddies (and soon to be yours!), it has character (wood floors, skylight) and its really big - (700 sq ft).

Can be seen on Wednesday - so do some comparison viewing.
