seeking info: former amish in the slope?

i'm doing some research for a book on the amish, and i overheard something about there being some businesses in the slope owned by people who are amish (or, presumably, were brought up amish and left the church at some point before). i didn't catch any other details and wasn't in a position to ask anything, but if anyone has any information or leads, i would really appreciate it. i am quite familiar with amish culture and would like to VERY RESPECTFULLY approach former church members to see if they might be willing to talk with me for my book. the amish people i am currently working with on the book are friends from lancaster county whose identities i'll disguise if and when the book comes out; the same would go for anyone who spoke to me in the slope, if i found someone.

theres an amish family that sells food every week at the grand army plaza farmers market. but i don't believe their really amish, i think their actors.

one day you see them at grand army plaza. the next day you see the same people at borough hall. the next day you see them again at union square. and i'll bet if you looked for another farmers market in ny the next day, you'd see them there too

they say they live at a farm thats a four drive from ny. do they really drive 4 hours to ny, and then 4 hours back, every single day? their amish, their not suppose to be driving at all

Genius. They've developed a schtick that plays perfectly on a wealthy group of people just looking for excuses to piss their money away on something 'authentic.' To be honest, I'm kind of jealous that I didn't think of that first.

Yep, they could be regular ol' mennonites. Not amish. Oh - and the new order amish are a bit more flexible with technology when it has to do with work. Computers, cell phones, driving etc for work. But at home they live the simple life.

And why can't a farm drive to and from NYC? it's only a few a few days a week for 1/2 the year. Doesn't seem that crazy. Salesmen probably drive a lot more each week. And who says they don't stay overnight in the city with a truck full of stuff? That also seems overwhelmingly reasonable. No?

i saw that place while googling. i'm going to check it out. i don't know what the people i overheard (i.e. was eavesdropping on, but all too briefly) were talking about....maybe this place.

Mennonites in East New York? Hadn't hear of them before.
