Shooting at Lincoln Place 3/10/06 — Brooklynian

Shooting at Lincoln Place 3/10/06

My block (Lincoln btw NY and BKLYN Aves) was flooded with cops after 5 - 8 shots were fired around 11:pm or so on Friday night (3/10/06). Lots of kids were hanging out and they started fighting. No-one was shot but I think 4 kids were arrested. A cop that I and my neighbors talked to had the craziest adrenaline rush and said "welcome to the neighborhood" and went on to tell us that things get really out of controll in the summer when the Crips and the Bloods go to war.
Haven't been in my place long and I'd be really grateful for any replies about how much truth there is to this cop's info. Are there regular shootings here? My gut tells me NO, and that is also the sense I got from the Jewish people that came out in the streets after the gun fire (and they talked to us: don't understand the rantings about the Jewish community on this message board. The traditional Jewish people I've talked to so far appear to be perfectly friendly, polite, and approachable people to me.)
Thanks.

  • Things definately get hectic in the warmer months as Everyone is out day and night, although i dont think you have to worry about constant shootings...But the blood/crip thing is definately real, but usually doesnt involve random people, unless wrong place/wrong time...just do your thing and mind your business with a streetsmart head, and you'll be fine...Its your home too.
  • Moved here in 03. I've heard a fair amount of gunfire in the last month or so, pretty unusual for this early in the year. As the weather gets warmer, and the streets are more active you will hear more random gunfire. I wouldn't say there's a lot of shootings in the neighborhood, but you will hear gunfire occasionally.

I think its pretty unusual for someone to get involved in a shooting where the parties don't know one another. If you look at some of the postings on this board, stranger-to-stranger shootings in the neighborhood usually get the attention of the news in the way that drug transactions gone bad do not.

I do think a lot of the kids in the neighborhood that are slinging are armed, or have easy access to weapons. Not a lot one can do about that, except to try and discourage drug activity in and around where you live. I make it a point to shoo away the young men away who like to congregate around my house. They are not always happy about it, but after making a point to come outside everytime I see folks leaning up against my gate, 99% of them don't stop here any more, or if they do, they usually move along when I ask them, without anything more than a "sorry".

As Nebula said you just need to keep an eye open and pay attention and you shouldn't find yourself in any danger.
  • Thanks for your replies. They pretty much confirm what I suspected. Just hope it stays this way and doesn't get any worse.

You're lucky in that you have a very active block association. They actually own the house on the corner of NY and Lincoln Place. The president is Jesse Hamilton who I believe lives on your block. I know that at the meeting they had last Saturday the topic was gang violence and what to do about all of the "tagging" going on in the area. You might consider contacting Jesse at 718-778-8924 to get his input.

Is that by chance the building on the SE corner of licoln/ny? That house is COVERED with obvious gang (blood/crip) graffiti and is a terrible eyesore on an otherwise beautiful corner..Everytime I pass it I wonder why the owner doesnt paint over these primitive scrawlings that mark "turf"...i always imagine a nice mural or at the least just the grey of the rest of the building...its a shame, its been up for so long and the owner should show a little more pride for his house and neighborhood...any thoughts, people?
  • Thank You!
Why doesn't someone remove that graffiti on those places on both sides of the road (Lincoln)? It almost seems like an endorsement or acceptance to just leave it up. By the way, if this kind of "gang" activity is starting this early I hope that everyone will be calling 911 EVERYTIME something happens. If the police think that the people in our neighborhood don't care, then why should they. Maybe they will get so sick of having to come over here, that we will actually see a police presence in the hood.
  • I think that there is a grafetti clean-up program run by the city. You call 311 and they'll come out and pressure wash/clean your building. Not sure if it is just for commercial buildings or if they do private homes also.

On a separate note, noticed that the crips got the gate in front of Tavern on Nostrand. Anyone who speaks to David should mention it to him as well.
  • Anyone who has information on the gang activity should call the 77th pct. Community Affairs 718-735-0634 (Det. Raton) or if you don't feel comfortable talking with the police you can call the District Attorney's Community Affairs Person 718-250-3370 (Ms. Adossa). They are working on the gang issues and are going to be doing some graffiti clean ups in Crown Heights very soon.
