The best/worst of food
Here's a rundown of some recent experiences, revelations, etc around the Heights and the Slope.
1. Mango is good. Finally went.
2. Trattoria Mulino delivery is very very good. Such quality, so consistent.
3. Bogota is the tops. Just a great time every time.
4. Lobo sucks. Bad food. Bad brunch. No highchair for my little squirt. Not a way to run a business.
5. Amorina. Delivery is a great option.
6. Heights Coffee. This is why I got to Starbucks. Starbucks is consistent. Heights is good, it's bad, it's middle of the road. I guess Starbucks is evil but they get it right every time.
7. Second Street Cafe. A joy. Kid-friendly deluxe.
8. Tea Lounge. Service here is not so good. Not so good at all.

i love the islands however - the discovery of them 1/2 the time using a microwave to heat up left overs from the fridge and then sell that to me for dinner, well... that totally blows.

Sounds like a good place for restaurant stories.
I used to work in a place where we had to rinse off any uneaten lettuce for use in future salads. Really - how much could they be saving? But there it is... -
Best food in PH - Beast.
-
Tratoria Mulino is fantastic, except they don't deliver to this side of Flatbush. I had to "bribe" them with a really good tip to get them to deliver it in a huge rainstorm once. (Car delivery by the way)
On a good note, the awesome La Taqueria does deliver here (on a bike).
Perhaps we should have an additional list of the places that do deliver to PH as well. I'll start gathering the info. -
Mulino delivers across Flatbush. At least to me.
-
mmm. just got joy delivery - garlic naan and shrimp tandoori masala. SO DELICIOUS. (just avoid the lamb tikka masala - it's nasty)

I stand by my statement. -
Brookfetish- have you been to Garden Cafe?

Worst understanding of the word 'opinion' - Tony Balls
Dude, your opinion is no more right than that of anyone else. Why must you constantly piss on the thoughts and comments of others, particularly when it comes to opinions on restaurants? State your case, support it, move on. You're actually capable of sharing a lucid observation when you're not busy acting like a snot in grade school. -
How is Garden Cafe? I haven't made it there yet. I hear great things of course.

No, but I want to. So, I guess my statement should read:
Best food I've had in PH = Beast. -

I like Beast too, but I think the menu is kind of hit and miss. Garden Cafe is a more ambitious restaurant overall, and is consistent as well. The food is "New American" with well-composed dishes using mostly seasonal ingredients, so the menu is constantly changing. The whole place is run by a truly lovely couple with only one other employee (who helps bus the tables). The husband does all the cooking while the wife runs the front of the house. The wine list is also excellent. Reservations are generally required because the place is small and there just aren't that many tables.
They also have a great Prix Fixe available on Tuesday and Wednesday (maybe also Thursday?- not sure) that includes 2 courses for $26 or 3 courses for $30.
A restaurant of this quality would be much more expensive in Manhattan.
EDIT: just went back and saw that I said almost the same thing about a year ago.
Here's a thread where the place is discussed:

Oh come on, I didnt piss on anybody.
My opinion, quite simply, is that Beast being the best food in PH is a joke! -
Beast is not the best. No way. It's cool, it's interesting, but many places are better. Le Gamin, for example, blows Beast away.
-
Beast! Beast! Beast! Beast! Beast! Beast! :!:
-
The food at Beast is excellent, but it's WAY overpriced for both the quantity of the food you're getting and for the neighborhood (unless the pricing scheme has changed since I was last there a few months ago).

I recall their burger not being a bad deal, but overall I agree with you. I also wish Beast did happy hour pricing, but that's a whole different topic.

Beast is tasty but spendy - and for the quality of service they provide during Sunday brunch, I don't need to go back regularly.
But it is such a damn tasty Bloody Mary they make there...
Joy is definitely the best Indian food, imho. Beef vindaloo! So good! I like Antonio's pizza for delivery; they're on Flatbush but will go to Washington.
See other thread for best-sushi flamewar^H^H discussion. -

a most excellent idea...i've found that places can be inconsistent in their delivery status to ph. tomato and basil, good pizza on 4th and union, wont deliver to me on vander and prospect, yet they will go to 14th and 7th in ps. they don;t seem to grasp the geographic illogic to this, even when i point it out. yamato usually delivers to ph, but i am not so fond with taro so close.
On a good note, the awesome La Taqueria does deliver here (on a bike).

anyone get chipshop delivery? when they were fledgling, i once got them to meet me on 7th and flatbush with a delivery, which was "in their range;" past flatbush is not. maybe with the atlantic chipshop, someone will cover us.
pino's pizza on 7th will come this way, but i usually opt for antonio's, even tho pino's basic pie, imho, is yummier (antonio's stuffed veg is my default).
kiko, nana, cocoroco, los pollitos, and even faan on smith will deliver to ph. -
I think we're SOL on Chipshop delivery this far up, which is a shame, cause I'd order their food ALL THE DANG TIME.

Kill the beast! Spill his blood!

FYI there's a website that makes delivery hella easy called http://www.zipmenu.com There's not a huge selection of restaurants as yet but its growing and some places show up that are rather distant.

unfortunately, it's terribly inaccurate. for instance, it lists two boots as delivering to 11238. yeah, they do ... but they they won't cross underhill. not cool at all. -

Yeah, I just make the Two Boots cut. It's a nice option to have, but you're not really missing all that much. -

my assumption is that at least half of the restaurants listed that deliver to me (I tried narrowing the search by entering my address but, well, their search engine isn't that sophisticated) cut off at vanderbilt or underhill. so I can't be bothered - you know me and un-met expectations. -
Melt is my new fave.
And Cafe Luluc on Smith Street. -
Subject: beast is yummy
the service is great too. they do need to change up their menu though. -
I didn't like Melt much. The menu just felt like they were trying too hard, and none of the interesting food combinations really worked for me.
-
But my gf and I finally tried Gen. Red dragon roll rocks.
Howdy, Stranger!
