I'd like to make a pitch for the curry chicken patty from Little Miss Muffin. It's has an excellent crust-to-filling proportion, the crust is nice and flaky and the curry is delish!
  • I have also heard good things about the little miss muffin patties, but have yet to try them. They were just taking a bunch of cocktail patties out of the oven the last time I bought coffee there and they definitely smelled good.
  • The patties at Little Miss Muffin are fantastic, one of the great underrated treasures in PH--hell, in all of Brooklyn! I love the barbecue chicken one but they're all good.

As for Biscuit, my last experience there was definitely the last. I got the fried chicken, which came pink inside. When I pointed it out to the waiter, he took it back to the kitchen. When the chicken returned, it was the same piece, which the waiter says they had just dunk back into the fryer. It was as if the whole thing had been shellacked. Horrible.
  • Nothing at Little Miss Muffin is actually made there. It is all reheated. In addition, I am pretty sure that they buy their patties from Golden Crust.

[I have to say that a great close to PH secret is Kush Cafe. It's Pan French African (or something like that). Great price, great menu, and cool atmosphere. There are always interesting conversations going on and friendly people. And of course the food is incredible: fresh veggies, poultry and meat exotically spiced and sauced. Excellent homemade desserts too. Check it out at Putnam & Fulton (where Cambridge intersects) in Cobble Hill.
Umm.. I think that you mean Clinton Hill not Cobble Hill. And the Kush Cafe is pretty far walk from the Biscuit. I haven't been there yet but it does look interesting. You should get your bearings straight before you start advertising.

P.S. The biscuits at Biscuit SUCKED!!! But the brisket w/ bbq sauce was good.

Excuuusse me... Are you happy now mr. GUEST with an attitude!
  • "Um" has got to be the most obnoxious way to begin a post. Or "actually". But anyway, I really like the veggie patty at Christies. Sooo good. Never soggy. And the veggies always taste really fresh. Maybe the whole wheat crust makes a difference with the sogginess, who knows. Miss muffin's are ok when Christie's is out, but yes I think they are from Golden Crust as well.

Sort of off topic but BBQ related- does anyone remember Kdel's in Fort Greene? It was amazing - they made lots of BBQ and blackened stuff and had great biscuits and sweet potatoes and collards and everything. Then one day - poof - it was gone. So tragic.
  • Since this board seems to be on a trend of service complaints, I must add that I now avoid Miss Muffin at all costs. I used to get my coffee and plain croissant there in the morning since it is so close to the train, but after many second attempts, I would rather go without. The plain crossants are thick, mushy, undercooked, and overpriced. The coffee was on par with the corner deli. All this I could overlook if I was ever greeted with a smile, a hello, or a thank you, but the attitudes of the ladies behind the counter was enough to sour my mood each time.

    Yuck.

Head to Nostrand Avenue for the best damn patties and doubles. You won't be sorry.
    i totally second that!

my fave ones are at natural mystic (but thats a vegetarian restaurant). the folks that run that place are all super nice.

    wheres that place?
  • Not sure, but Imhotep (corner of Park and Nostrand) makes some mighty fine veggie patties, though. An all-vegan restaurant, it's the goodness. For spicy beef patties, try Nick's, a couple blocks north from there. The patties have a belly-burning kick.
  • I used to go to miss muffin for a special treat until one day I was inside and I SAW them making the muffins, if 'making' is the correct term: take a large plastic tub of pre-made batter bearing a label something like "Pillsbury industrial strength blueberry flavored muffin batter" out of the fridge, scoop into muffin pans, bake for 10 minutes.

after seeing that, sad to say, i lost my taste for miss muffin's muffins. ignorance was bliss.
  • Carnivore wrote: I hate to say this, but I totally disagree about Christie's. I'll start by admitting that the only thing I had there is the beef patties, but if your name is "[X's] beef patties" your beef patties had better be good!

As a big beef patty enthusiast, I have to say that Christie's do not measure up. The crust is inconsistant, there is too much filling, and the filling is too liquidy and has a weird aftertaste. There are lots of better patty places around (I like the place on Washington between St. Johns and Sterling a lot). I think Christie's thrives only because of the location and the cool sign. Maybe their other food is better...
Disagree all around. I love the Christie's beef patties. LMMaHS don't measure up and I haven't found a place that I like nearly as much.

I'll second Nostrand (@ Fulton) for the doubles. There is a place with doubles right near the Franklin Ave. train station that isn't bad if you don't want to head all the way to Nostrand.
  • I love Christies patties, especially the jerk chicken ones, they sell out early every day. Less fond of the beef, and not fond at all of the vegetable ones, but the jerk chicken patties make my mouth water just thinking about them.

Just heard from reliable source that as of today, Biscuit is no more. Don't know if it will reopen later under new name...

on park and nostrand. south west corner, right next to the "food corp" bodega. i find that their food is less greasy than imhotep's, which is also good, and on the north west corner or park and nostrand.

I used to work in a (from-scratch) bakery. We used to get catalogs for all that stuff - frozen muffin batter (or frozen muffins), premade pie shells and fillings, parbaked frozen "artisan" breads, and, my personal favorite, the backpack-mounted cake icing system with icing cartridges (it kind of came out of tubes) etc. I think a lot of places use that stuff. Not only does it not taste that great, but its also usually full of transfats, etc.

Me, I do my own baking.

    BISCUIT IS NO MORE??!??

    AHHHHHHH!

DUDE! Fine, some of you weren't that nuts about the place, but c'mon, $25 got you a ton of killer fried chicken. That, and their Sunday brunchtime meat sandwich was outstanding.

They shall be missed. Guess I'm cooking ribs this weekend.

    -p
  • Ahh, now I know why they're closed.

I was going to ask their (former) waitress when I saw her walking down the street the other day. But she was scantily clad and I figured she'd just take me for a guy trying to mack her or something.

And why is that? (I loved that pace) :(
  • Subject: fried chicken

mitchell's soul food on vanderbilt has good fried chicken (but is only open wed. to sat.). also, ruby's the chinese restaurant on 7th ave (across flatbush next to the stationary store) has really good fried chicken.
  • Subject: Biscuit closing

I am thinking I am the scantily clad waitress, I was probably coming from yoga hence the scantily clad. It closed because the owner has a lot of projects going on, and wanted to focus more on them. I guess he figured it had a good run and it was on to other things.
