In Appreciation: Jane Schreiber and The Scouting Party
Wandering thoughts on another thread led us to the information that the woman who ran awesomely cool and much loved south slope institution The Scouting Party in the 80s and 90s passed away recently.

I went for the vibe, the used books, super reasonably priced cotton kimonos, and the occasional freaky tiny toy or obscure musical tool. Thanks Jane! R.I.P.

I hope she knows she was appreciated for her efforts here. Once again. too many of us forget to thank our local shop keepers when they're still here. I always let my pharmacist know how much I appreciate his free advice-I always stop in to say hi in my fave stores even if I'm not buying. I loved Scouting Party, and the random conversations there were part of the shopping experience. Stores like that will never exist again in Park Slope.

LOVE this comment from the memorial blog, since it sums up the kind of awesome place created by this awesome person . . .
One day Jane handed me a copy of L. Ron Hubbards book called Dianetics. I didn't want it but she insisted. When I asked why, Jane told me she wanted it out of the store and in the garbage but she couldn't throw a book away so I should do it....

^^LOL!
I loved that store, i used to go there all the time. Such a cool place and such a friendly lady. There are quite a few 'old time" stores I miss in the nabe, I used to be very good friends with the man who owned The Windmille Shoppe (where Possibilities On The Slope is now), and I still miss it when i walked by. -
I'm really sorry to hear that...loved the store and thought Jane was wonderful
