Brawn needed!
I am having a 305 pound file cabinet delivered to my house between 1 and 5 pm today. The delivery guy may refuse or be unable to carry it up my front stoop, much less to the 4th floor of my house.
Is anyone strong enough, healthy enough and available enough to help with this project?
If so, please call me at 718 499 4395. I am quite willing to pay for meaningful assistance.
Thanks.

Maybe it would make more sense to open the cabinet and carry up the contents in separate parts?
-
It would, if there were contents. It's a brand new four-drawer lateral file cabinet, totally empty.
Why it's that heavy I do not know. -
Can you take the drawers out and carry them separately and then the cabinet?
-
I won't know that until I see the cabinet.
-
How does a four drawer file cabinet weigh 305 lbs, is it made from solid gold? I'm sure the drawers will come out.

All the good stuff has bricks or cinder blocks or other weights concealed in the base to lower the center of gravity so they don't get all top-heavy when filled and transform your office into a death trap.
-
how much do they charge to ship 305 pounds!?!?
-
$32.04
The kicker is the issue with which I started this thread: is the freight company going to deliver the cabinet to my front door (which is up my stoop), or will they give up in disgust when they discover there's no freight elevator? -
I suggest you call the shipper to inquire and then arm yourself with a hefty cash incentive just in case. You could also try PMing posters who have previously offered services here, one with the name Trainsmoke de Leon or something similar comes to mind.
-
I've got $120 in my wallet for that very reason. I did PM one guy who offers services here. He was the wrong guy, however. I just called the freight company; they say I'm the next delivery.
We'll see... -
one time a mover simply picked up my 165 pound laser printer and carried it up two flights of stairs all by himself.
i thought that was a lot. -
I think usually when you pay for furniture delivery, they're supposed to deliver it to the room where you want it. If they didn't get details about whether it's a walk-up etc, that's their problem. If it doesn't fit up the stairs or through a door or something, that would be on you.
-
It all comes down to the awkwardness of the shape/size really more than weight. I would rather carry two 150lb dumbbells to the top floor than a 80lb big screen TV.
-
As it turned out, the delivery guy was a big guy, but about my age... 60+. He and I and a friend of mine, 66, wrestled the monster up the front stoop.
The delivery guy said that for all the money in the world, his knees would not get him (much less the file cabinet) up two interior flights of stairs.
I just spoke to the contractor who renovated my house (at enormous expense) a few years ago. He said he'll send over a couple of big guys and a hand truck, and we'll see what we see. -
I have been oddly drawn to this board all day- keep us updated! I HAVE to know!

You should try to get the delivery charge refunded by the company you bought the furniture from.

bring it in through the window!
i love when people do that. I entertained my block for a good hour last year moving a couch and desk up two fire escapes and in the third floor window.
use lots of ropes. -
take lots of photos

It'll probably be some days or weeks before I get it any further upstairs. I have to find a couple of very large movers! (my contractor's guy didn't call... it wouldn't be the first time my contractor forgot to follow through on what to him was an unimportant detail).
-
Here's a thought. Your cabinet is probably the same size, shape and weight as an upright piano, try calling piano movers. They have these sling type things that go over their shoulders and two guys can carry a piano upstairs.
-
The U-haul storage place on 4th Ave has day labor guys hanging around looking for moving work.
-
Thank you!! Both sound like excellent ideas.

I was thinking of renting on of those lumber delivery forklifts that lifts three floors....
pictures of the damage I create would be excellent! -

Why, it's not their fault. A piece of furniture that size should have been discussed before being purchased. You can't assume someone is going to lug that thing up 4 flights of stairs with no problem. Every time we've had large pieces of furniture delivered either the store asks us what floor we're on or we mention it. Some places have a cut off, usually 3 floors. If we need it for our 4th floor we'll tip them extra. Also, some places have curb side delivery only noted. -
Yes, I would agree that it is a bit unreasonable to demand a refund of the $32 because they only carried it in the front door. Does anyone seriously believe that $32 should guarantee not only curbside delivery of a three hundred pound mammoth, not only up the stoop front door delivery, but full white glove placement in a fourth floor room? I think they did $32 worth of work for sure.
-
I wouldn't go so far as to demand a refund, but yeah - if you sell me a piece of furniture, no matter what the weight (they know how much it weighs), I'm gonna want it delivered where I want it unless they tell me from the start that it's only curbside delivery.
-
If I ordered it from a furniture store or something providing delivery, then I would expect full service. If I ordered it standard freight shipping off the internet or something then I wouldn't, even if they didn't specify curbside only.
-
I have no problem at all with the delivery charge. I even tipped the guy $40 on top of the delivery charge. He worked his tush off!
I have now arranged with College Educated Movers (highly recommended on another thread on this board) to come over tomorrow AM to bring the file cabinet up two more flights of stairs.
Their price was one-half of the next lowest price I was able to obtain, and less than one-third of the prices I was quoted by piano-moving companies. If they get it up to the top floor, I will also tip them generously.
Howdy, Stranger!
