a great steak in Park Slope

12th street has great steaks and I love everything else about it, too. I also highly recommend Patois (in Carrol Gardens - just a quick bus trip) for their steak frites. Both establishments have outstanding food & service & are reasonably priced.

well shoot.
The food was not worth the price. I had the onion soup (bland, even salt did not help), the sirloin with mashed potatoes, and the profiteroles, while my roommate had the chicken and potatoes and the apple tart.
And the service…. my empty plate sat in front of me for 10 minutes while at least 4 people walked by, and by this time there where only 4 others in the restaurant.
Only positive is that the mustard dips are unique and the rum and cokes are strong.
I had a really nice lamb shank for dinner at Moutarde a month ago, and girlfriend loved her steak and frites. I still think it's a good neighborhood spot. I've never made a reservation to get in.
I hope they read this board and step it up -- sorry you had a crap meal.
Just curious -- was your roomie done too, as your empty plate sat in front of you? One style of service is not to clear the plates until everyone at the table is done... -
Her plate sat in front of her for about 5 of those 10 minutes.

I've had great steak at Magnolia's on 6th Ave. and 12th street.
Also, Jacks on 5th Avenue between 13th and 14th make a fabulous
Hanger steak. -
We went to Moutarde last night, and I have to say it was perfectly nice.
A friend came over, so we had to find a table for three just after 7p on a saturday night . . . I think we got their last table. It was the same as I had before -- the leg of lamb and hanger steak are both really good. Actually, the lamb is excellent and comes with good sides, a veg melange and roasted potatoes, all very generous.
The service was friendly, and we got our food in a reasonable amount of time on a slammed saturday night. It was all cooked to our specifications...what more could I ask for? We also had a perfectly nice bottle of red and a celebrity sighting. Totally pleasant all around.
I'm glad Moutarde is one of my neighborhood places. It's not Al Di La (my personal favorite) but it was all good anyway.
The place I really want to try is Little Dishes on Seventh Ave in the South Slope, but I figured there'd be no getting in at the last minute prime time on saturday night. -

Lyle Lovett
I have a pure evil Geraldo story, but not for a public board this morning. And, I mean pure evil in only a comic sense. -
I feel nervous eating meat that's got hormones or antibiotics in it. I don't know of any places in the Slope that sell naturally raised/grass fed steaks . Sadly.

I have not been, but I'm pretty sure Applewood is into the organic stuff.
Moutarde (like a number of neighborhood places) has Niman Ranch pork, which I *think* does the right thing without actually going for the Organic certification.
The nice thing about lamb is that it's in much smaller production and not stuffed with antibiotics and growth hormones like conventional poultry and beef.
Yes, I'm a member of the Park Slope Food Coop, and we get very good meat there - freerange organic, sustainably raised ETC. We actually have a Lamb Lady that comes to visit with her product. Love that. -

That's really cool about the lamb lady. I used to a Coop member but I didn't want to work there. There's good grass fed meat at the farmer's markets though. I've been meaning to try Applewoods! I'm never in that part of the Slope, but I'll make a special trip. -
