It seems obvious to me that treating people like irresponsible blights on civil society inevitably leads to them sinking to your expectations. Treating 16-year olds respectfully, like the near-adults they are, just may speed along the maturation process. Not that the teens I witnessed were anything but respectful & responsible already.

haven't been to chip shop many times, so grain of salt here, but i'd take the behavior of plenty of teenagers over the behavior of the waiters i've had there.

Just to chip in (HAH!)...yeah discrimination is bad, and if the waiter turned out a bunch of Blacks, Jews, Gays, mimes, etc. we'd all be shocked and outraged...but c'mon people, a couple of teenagers were told to hit the bricks because a local business didn't want them in their joint..boo hoo.
If the teens were so fragile that this cruel rebuff sets them on a downward spiral of antisocial behavior and self destruction, then that damage was done before they set foot in the place.
They're teenagers - their hormone drenched, crazed, unformed brains forgot about that shit ten seconds after they left the joint. -
And then the day they turn 18, after spending all of their teen years hanging out in Smiling Pizza, everything will be OK and they'll know exactly how to act in more adult-oriented establishments.

yes, the rejection will even fit into what their sensible parents hopefully taught them: There are some places you will be wanted in life, there are some places you will be tolerated, and there are some places your will be neither wanted OR tolerated.

Strangely, it seems some get happiness from feeling oppressed.

Whose place is it to teach teens how to act in more adult- oriented establishments... the establishment or um their parents?
I agree with the person who said they would walk out if they saw a bunch of teens inside. -
i also agree about not wanting to go into a place with a bunch of teenagers. i try to avoid 7th ave when school gets out because it's mayhem

flatbush ave is pretty nasty as well around 3pm. The problem is that many of the schools around here have kids that commute and they just hang out and dont go home because going home sucks when you're 14.

Are you implying that it's the Chip Shop's or any other adult-oriented establishment's responsibility to teach the great masses of unwashed American youth how to comport themselves in public?

geez, just because you were all wretched little monsters when you were teenagers doesn't mean all teenagers are. i went out with my friends a fair amount and don't recall anything really awful, except one time leaving a lousy tip for a waitress (at an ice cream parlor, of all things) who was a jerk to us.
chip shop is hardly al di la. anywhere that has french fries as part of its name should be able to handle a few kids. -
Eh - this issue is hard. I'm reminded of a time when i was 18/19 and went to brunch in SOHO and was COMPLETELY ignored by the waitstaff with my friends, because we weren't old enough to drink, and looked like we didn't make much money. All things considered, I'm a great tipper, regardless of how I'm dressed, or what age I've been. If my parents sent me out to grab food with my buddies, they certainly gave me enough cash to tip the server.
I think business is better than NO business. Why not just give them the opportunity TO be ridiculous and THEN kick them out. I mean. I don't know. The way this economy is going it seems crazy to kick out business. Teenagers or not. -

+1. I dont ever remember acting a fool in public. And any place that offers fried candy bars on the menu shouldn't be copping a tude about serving some kids (especially when they advert a student lunch special!)

My wife works in a Brooklyn high school (not in the Slope, but not far) her students are not allowed to leave the building during the school day. Not for lunch.
This rule was a result of a negation between the Borad of Ed and the Community Board.
The shopkeepers were afraid of disruptive behavior.
I beleive their fear was their $oss -
The Chip Shop doesn't employ the brightest bulbs in PS. Chock it up to low IQ. Their reheated Shepherd's Pies aren't worth the hassle, the teens can do much better.

OK, benefit of the doubt here, is it possible these teens had been in the place before and the waiter knew they were trouble?

either way, i honestly don't think keeping groups of teens out of a restaurant is a big deal. it happens everywhere, not just PS.

Doubt it very much. The waiter spoke to the teens as if he'd never met them before & then later with his explanation never suggested any history with these particular guys. -
I tried to order delivery from them a few months ago. The person who answered the phone just said hello when he picked up and it sounded like he was stoned out of his mind. I asked if it was the Chip Shop and he just said, "what do you want?" I tried to give my order, but he asked stupid questions that made me think I had dialed the wrong number and was being pranked, so I hung up. I checked the number and dialed it again, but the same stoned dude answered. Before I had the chance to say anything - he started to scream at me like a madman. I hung up and have not even thought twice about that place since then.
