Armory on 8th

I know it serves as a Women's shelter right now, but wouldn't it make an awesome space if they converted to condos? I'm sure there's a less striking building they could relocate the shelter to. Possibly something officially in Windsor Terrace. Thoughts? And I know this sounds kindov harsh, but think about it. Exposed brick, high ceilings... Takers?

i thought everyone in and around park slope knows this space is becoming a sports center (which i think is a great idea)

i really don't understand why anyone would like to see a place like this turned into condos.

It would have been nice if they made it into a skating rink. Plenty of space to have two hockey rinks.

C'mon now gang - can't we all just get along? I think there is a solution. All the condos in the building have to be a minimum of two bedrooms. If you want a condo in the building, you also have to take in one of the homeless. Discount if you take in more. And the president of the condo board IS one of the previously homeless.

Talk about comeuppance. Gee - just when I thought the term self absorbed yuppy was a term of the 1980's.

This is a posting on Park Slope Parents today...

For those who are following the opening of the new Armory (8th Ave and 14th
Street), the city and the YMCA have signed an agreement giving the YMCA the
"keys to drive." There's a public hearing on March 9th (a formality) - it's
all looking thumbs up after many delays!

This is great news and will mean that, fingers crossed, the Armory will be
open around the summer months.

I met with the folks at the Y last week and they are hoping to work with PSP
members to make sure that they have input into the programs that will be
available at the new facility.

So, if the Y operates it, does that mean you need a Y membership? If the city spent millions renovating it (which I've heard, so it could be wrong) shouldn't we get to use it for free or pay a fee to the city?

A joint public hearing on a concession agreement with the YMCA of Greater New York to operate the Park Slope Armory is set for Monday, March 9, in Manhattan.

The hearing will take place at 2:30 p.m. before the Franchise and Concession Review Committee and the NYC Department of Homeless Services at 22 Reade St.

The following is from the published notice:

“Intent to Award as a concession the operation, management and maintenance of the Park Slope Armory Indoor Athletic Facility and Community Center for a license term of 10 years to the YMCA of Greater New York. Compensation to the city will be as follows: in each operating year of the license agreement, licensee shall reinvest in the licensed premises the greater of (a) $20,000 compounded annually at 5 percent or (b) 20 percent of the total annual operating net revenue.”

The joint hearing will take place at 2:30 p.m. at 22 Reade St., Manhattan.

A draft copy of the agreement will be available for review during business hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, March 2, through Friday, March 6, and Monday, March 9, at the office of the Department of Homeless Services, 253 Broadway, 9th floor.

After the Y was designated as the winning bidder, negotiations were slow going. The Y has said it will cost $500,000 a year to operate the facility — but the city contract greatly limits the non-profit’s ability to generate revenue.

“The devil in these negotiations has been the details,” said one insider who requested anonymity. “The contract sets aside a lot of the day for the Department of Education to use the armory as a gym. It gets down to tiny details, like what soda machines the Y can put in there and who will pay for the lightbulbs. Stuff like that.”
