What's Missing?

ethiopian food! I'd walk over to PS more often for that.
-
I don't care-as long as it isn't another realtor or coffee bar type place-I am so, so sick of those!
-
An In-and-Out Burger. Or at least a White Castle.
I would have hoped for the return of a real butcher, but United has been pretty good to me since the guys on 7th left and I wouldn't switch back. -
A soccer bar, but hopefully we'll be getting that once the FloydNY spin off opens.
A nice movie theater. I don't like the one on PPW and would prefer not to travel to the one on Court St. I used to live in Kips Bay, and I miss the movie theater on 2nd ave/30th St.
A coffee bar that doesn't allow strollers or laptop users. -
I am sure I'll get flamed for this but we need a drug store (w/ late hours) in the 4th-5th Ave area somewhere between Douglass and 9th St -
-

Nerguards (sp?) 5th Ave right off 9th Street is open 24/7. -
A good butcher that carries more than basic cuts of meat without special ordering. (On the lines of Staubitz, or even the butcher in Windsor Terrace.) And Korean food.
-
And a decent fish market. Don't get me started on the ones on 7th Avenue. Only good local source is Blue Moon at the Greenmarket when it's in season. (Are they back yet?)
-
i'm new in town, so someone tell me, please, if this already exists:
a belgian beer/frites and maybe mussels place. not too pricey.
and i second the korean vote. -

An old-fashioned ice cream parlor/candy store! The kind with a counter and soda jerks! Anybody who resurrected an authentic/retro version of this would have a licence to print $, esp with a party room in back. I understand they used to have one, Lewnes, at 9th st. and PPW, before it was an ill-fated restaurant and then alas a condo tower.
Right now, the closest one is in Bay Ridge, I believe (Hinsch's? Haven't been in awhile...) -
No more cell phone stores (how about a store that specializes in double strollers?
relax, I'm kidding.).
What about the kind of things the neighborhood needs that have been replaced by pricey gift shops such as a good shoe repair store, a good diner that isn't overpriced, a bakery with GOOD bread, Grimaldis and maybe a place like Willie Bees that is really a place that is meant for parents and kids and strollers? It is strange that the butcher was never replaced when the young owner died, but the butcher in Windsor Terrace is ALMOST as good and not far from South Slope and I used to walk there all the time. -

A good diner, like the Purity is its heyday.
Good bread and mid-priced baked goods - Cousin John's can be too twee...
In defense of fish stores .. the one on 7th between 3&4 next to the barber is the best - nice people, good selection, CLEAN.
If you have a car or a bike, the White Castle jones can be easily sated in downtown Brooklyn near the Fulton Mall, Atlantic Ave in Ft Greene or down 4th Avenue at 30th Street, next to (naturally) a police precinct(72nd).
The commercial real estate market on 7th between Flatbush and 9th Sts is ridiculous. There are a lot of gaping holes there that could be filled with something besides a boutique or real estate office .... -
Ditto on the bakery. (Although, kensingtonmom, I've been here going on 15 years and can't think of a single good bakery that was displaced by chi-chi stores. Regina Bakery was old-school, but lousy.) Delices de Paris bread is really disappointing for a so-called French bakery.
What would it take to get Royal Crown to open an outpost here? You can buy some of their stuff at the food co-op, but it's not the same. -
I would love to see a real BBQ place.
-
It has really bothered me that dogs have a bakery (Pawtisserie) but I don't. A butcher would be great too, although I feel like I should throw in a candlestick maker to complete the rhyme.
-
A 24hour grocery store that isn't Pathmark?
-
No more cell phone stores, no more real estate offices. We need a hardware store and a locksmith in the south slope . . . we used to have them but now we have Baby Bird and such.
-

You can't possibly think that those things are more important than a $40 Sex Pistols onesie!*
[/sarcasm]
* - yes, I have seen that exact item in Baby Bird. I dropped the tag and backed right out of the shop! Never went back.

No I mean somewhere in the middle - maybe I'm lazy, but 10+ blocks seems way too far to have to walk to a drugstore -

Isn't there a 24 hour Key Food on Seventh? I'm sure I've been in that place at 1 am -

As a north sloper, I agree. Plus, it's been proven: exercise (too much walking) is bad for you.

Neergards is expensive but they do deliver.....even to Kensington. -
For all the people asking for a butcher- have any of you tried A&S Pork Store on 5th ave? I've started walking form PH to go there. I've also heard that Union Market has a good butcher. Now PH is a neighborhood that really needs a butcher.
I totally agree about the fish stores. Blue Moon is my main source of fish when they're around. -
-
Equinox! Totally.
-
A&S Pork Store is good for pork (natch), sausages, etc. Also has some selection of prime steaks. But again a limited selection of meats and cuts -- not just exotica but hard to get, say, a brisket. Stuff you can walk in off the street and get at Staubitz, or for that matter, the Windsor Terrace place whose name I can't remember.
You may be right about Union Market. Haven't tried it yet. Actually I hear they also have a decent, but small, fish counter. -
A really good Mexican restuarant - I mean a really, realluy, good one and
a really good rice and beans place -
Really awesome Thai food. Heck, open a Brooklyn branch of Sripraphai!
