You can't possibly think that those things are more important than a $40 Sex Pistols onesie!*

    [/sarcasm]

    * - yes, I have seen that exact item in Baby Bird. I dropped the tag and backed right out of the shop! Never went back. :)

I know, and yet someone must buy those things. That place seems to do good business. I really miss the locksmith who used to be there.
  • hey, my toddler has the clash onesie and looks great, layoff!

    just kidding

See, I love the concept and would buy one for my 5-month-old niece in a nanosecond... just not for $40. I need to figure out home screenprinting and make my own! :)
  • I hate to say it but if I ever have a kid, he/she is going to have exactly that kind of thing, but I think I would go slightly more obscure and have to go Megan's route.

Megan's Route ---Sounds like a chick flick, or maybe a story about a vaguely disabled kid.

United Meat Market, 219 PPW, 718-768-7227.
You can get a 32 oz. Container of beer to go at Farrell’s two doors down while your there. image
  • Subject: la terrazz

We had a good rice & beans place a few years back. La Terrazza. I went there all the time. I loved their huevos with red beans, so yummy. and so cheap. And their green salsa. they were the real deal.

  • Carnivore wrote: For all the people asking for a butcher- have any of you tried A&S Pork Store on 5th ave? I've started walking form PH to go there. I've also heard that Union Market has a good butcher. Now PH is a neighborhood that really needs a butcher.

I totally agree about the fish stores. Blue Moon is my main source of fish when they're around.
    A&S also makes great sandwiches
and Union Market sells quality fish

there used to be a good fish store on Fifth Ave . . . then they moved to a bigger space and went out of business. So sad. I think both the former locations are real estate offices now. (sniff)

a belgian beer/frites and maybe mussels place. not too pricey.

and i second the korean vote.
Bar Tabac in Cobble Hill has pretty good mussels and frites. Not to expensive and you can sit outside when the weather is good.
  • linusvanpelt wrote: Ditto on the bakery. (Although, kensingtonmom, I've been here going on 15 years and can't think of a single good bakery that was displaced by chi-chi stores. Regina Bakery was old-school, but lousy.)
Remember the vaguely disgustingly named Cheese in the Park? It was on the corner of 9th Street and 7th Avenue -- I think there's a realtor there now. It must have closed 10 years ago. It had great cheese (of course), bread, jams, teas, and various precious picnic items but it was good, and sadly, it's gone.
  • a book store on 5th is sorely needed
no. not a barnes & noble

but a real book store with,
    smart geeky girls wearing glasses,
    behind the counter
  • Yeah, a bookstore on 5th would be good.
  • a really good magazine shop that has thousands of magazines.

But would it get enough business to survive, given both a B&N and an indie shop already on 7th Ave?
  • steve wrote: a really good magazine shop that has thousands of magazines.
Especially down by 5th - not really a single newstand/candy store - just Bodegas with a few papers and maybe a magazine or 2.
  • meganlibrarian wrote: But would it get enough business to survive, given both a B&N and an indie shop already on 7th Ave?
    yea. of course it would

i like the indie book shops on 7th but don't go there often
because they're so far from me.

if there was a book store on 5th with magazines and comic books
    that would be the joint!

The other thought going through my head after reading the original quote:

"Would quijibo not frequent a real book store manned by an old geeky dude wearing glasses?"

(asks the smart, geeky, glasses-wearing, early 30's librarian...) 8)

speaking as an old geeky dude
why would i wanna frequent a store manned by me?
no way. no how. no fun

    i wanna walk in,
ask the geeky glasses-wearing librarian if they stock philip roth's "american pastoral",
engage in a long convo about how angst-filled roth's work is.
and what a douche he is in real life,
catch a sniff of the librarian's hair.
    purchase something and walk out.

can't do that with an old geeky dude behind the counter...
    or at least i don't wanna... :D

Point taken. I can't argue with that. :)

I do miss that place. I remember the cheese but not the bread. They didn't bake it anyway, did they, or am I forgetting that too? I wouldn't mind a good cheese shop now that you mention it, though I guess Blue Apron has that covered to some extent.

I used to like that place too. They've closed and been replaced by that new Greek place.

One would be very hard pressed to find a more comprehensive selection than the two full counters at Bierkraft. Blue Apron and Divine Taste are OK, but Bierkraft is on a different plane when it comes to cheese.
  • korean or Malaysian joint.
  • Bierkraft is also selling draft beer to go in 64oz jugs. They are specializing in beers not available in bottles, and even have a Rouge beer filtered through three filters of fresh hops. Quite impressive (for all the beer geeks on the board).

oh my. this sounds quite impressive.

i'll have to stop in and buy a few jugs. yummmm! :)

Actually very.... but I live in PS so I aint using no HDMI cable so that the man (the networks) can decide to restrict my ability to record programing. (HDMI allows DRM to be put into the digital stream)

As for buying such stuff - there is a cool computer reapir place on 9th St between 5th and 6th - but in the end if you dont want to get ripped off use newegg.com or B&M Best Buy - no small mom and pop can match the low prices available on electronics from big suppliers.

OK sorry to veer off topic but I have to ask what you mean by that - I am having a plasma installed (with HDTV) and Cablevision is replacing my box with a HDTV box that will allow me to record a la Tivo style. Are you saying that it will not be possible? Please help because it is not a small investment. Thanks :)
