I went to Rossman's today. I can't believe it took me 12 years and Potter dragging met there to get with the program!

24 hours? Interesting. Thanks for the tip, Flex (and Potter).

it's amazing. fresh real fruit all winter. and it's almost meyer lemon season.

I'm chiming in on the rossman's love too. It is awesome, although I haven't gone since I've lived in Sunset Park. Used to walk out of there with bags of produce and hardly spending anything. If you go on the weekend though, get there early because you can be left with slim pickings.

Heh -- you're not the only one. I was praying for a TJ's when Eckerd's closed.
Close the Jennifer's Convertibles next door and then it's big enough for a Trader Joe's. Oh, I can dream. -
belzjm wrote: i've been praying for the same thing to happen with the two huge places for rent on the corner of berkeley and 7th. close the ace supermarket and make that whole space a tj's!
i believe the same peeps that own Union Market own Gourmet Garage.
or at least a gourmet garage or an amish market or something...
i'll be interested to hear what comes in the hollywood video place...it is indeed a rather large space... -
I think that giant space should be turned into the largest most awesome winestore ever.
But somehow I doubt that will happen -
"i believe the same peeps that own Union Market own Gourmet Garage."
That's funny, because I like GG, love Amish Market, but I think Union Market is way overpriced. I'll still stop in the former places when I'm in Manhattan. I can't understand why Amish can rent those gigantic spaces all over Manhattan - they own the Zeytuna place in the financial district, Zeytins on Bryant Park, and others - and yet charge lower prices than Union Market. Can the rents be higher in Park Slope than in Manhattan, so the merchants charge more? I picked up a French bread at one of those last week - it was $1.99 - the same thing costs $2.39 here in the Slope. Meats at Union Market are insanely expensive, IMO. -
How does the OP know this place is rented? I walked by yesterday and the "For Rent" sign is still up.
-
Carmen - A friend was looking to open a buisness selling party goods. He mentioned that he needs a large space and I recommended the hollywood location.
He called and spoke with the landlord who told him that the place is already spoken for and that he is 90% sure the deal will go through. He also told my friend to call back in 2 days when he will know for sure.
My friend call the landlord again 2 days later and the landlord told him that the place is 100% rented.
I don't know why the number is still up. You can call the number yourself and pretend to inquire about the space. -
you might tell your friend that there's another large space for rent up at flatbush and 6th avenue where the old video place was there. video edge, i think it was called...?
it's been for rent for quite a while, so perhaps the rent is flexible by this point in time.
there's also those couple spaces for rent on 7th avenue between berkeley place and union street, which combined would make a pretty large space... -
there's also a large space on 7th ave near 14th Street. I can't remember the exact location, but it's on the east side of the street and has been vacant for a long time (like the space above, i wonder if the rent is flexible)

I know it's baffling, but what you've got to realize is that's part of the whole appeal of these places. Places like "Union Market" charge exorbitant prices for pedestrian goods on purpose.
If you haven't noticed, nuevo-Park Slopers take great joy in overpaying for run-of-the-mill products and services as long as the atmosphere in which they're shopping is sufficiently pretentious--rent, kids clothing, and ESPECIALLY groceries. In fact, if given a choice between a regular grocery store charging regular prices and a 'pretentious' store charging two dollars more for the very same item, nuevo-Slopers will pointedly flock to the overpriced one. That is why "Union Market" has such a following in this "affluent" area.
The irony is that the supermarkets in the Upper East Side, which is where all the REAL money is in this city, offer much more reasonable prices on groceries, because the people there are actually smart and frugal about where they shop and refuse to overpay for anything (which is probably how their families became so rich to begin with). -
right, Obamanut, that's why I drive to Rossmans under the BQE to buy my fancy produce at fancy prices. Your overgeneralizations are really ridiculous.

Ok, so your anecdotal evidence of one individual case (yourself) disproves everything I said and renders the immense popularity of "Union Market" and other supermarkets like it an aberration. Darn, guess I better head back to the drawing board.. doh! #-o -
there are enough others like me that it's not anecdotal, but I can't be bothered to engage in the type of ridiculousness you seem to love so much.

Ok, so the never-ending stream of complaints from nuevo-Slopers about stores like Ace and Pathmark not being good enough for our "affluent" area and the hundreds of nuevo-Slopers streaming in and out "Union Market" on any given day of the week are completely irrelevant. From now on I will base my conclusions about Park Slope off of the shopping habits of you and your dozen or so acquaintances. -

One of the points of the thread, if you had even bothered to read it, is that the produce at places like Ace suck, and posters would like to find decent, not necessarily expensive, alternatives. Sorry if you find that so unreasonable, but why am I not surprised to find that you don't mind worms and larvae in your produce. -

My eyes glaze over when I start to try to read anything you write, but thanks for the brief and painless clarification. Now go play with Hamilton. -

Funny, for someone who claims to not enjoy reading what I write, you sure have replied to enough of it. :^o
Now why don't we get this thread back to the original topic of Park Slope supermarkets, shall we? -

Oh, go eat a dub pie.
"Dub pies!! Dub pies!! Dub pies!!" *backflip* -
Wait ... dub pies are good.

Eh, not interested. And you invaded a thread that I had been posting on, typically I do avoid you. You've actually become really boring. It was mildly entertaining in the beginning. Now it's just dumb. And boring. Maybe start posting as a "neuvo" "park" "sloper" to get everyone really riled up about the "old" "timers" ? Actually it gives me great comfort that you are so miserable in your "life". Nighty night.
Now why don't we get this thread back to the original topic of Park Slope supermarkets, shall we? -

Mmmmm.....I'll get to eat them on the way home from CurleyGreg's new bar.

"Neuvo" sloper! But try the chili cheese if they still have it. It's yum.
And back on thread - produce - it's spring! Green markets. Even the small one in Carroll Gardens rocks for certain things. Union Square is worth the trip. -
I'm a big fan of the shepherd's pie and the mince & cheese.
Howdy, Stranger!
