Props to 311
There was a big pile of rubble on my corner (Prospect Place just below Vanderbilt on the north side) for months...leftovers from some ConEd job, it seemed because of a wood barricade marked ConEd useslessly standing in front of it. The rubble ate up a parking spot and nothing seemed to be happening, even though one day I saw cops writing something up and taking pictures of it. Loathe to wend my way through the hell that is Con Ed's phone system, late one night after getting annoyed about the rubble for the thousandth time, I called 311. They patched me through to a "Sanitation Dept. Specialist" and I explained what was what.
Imagine my astonishment and delight when, the next morning at 10:30 AM, I'm coming home and see two Sanitation workers shoveling up the rubble into a garbage truck! Was it coincidence, had this been scheduled for months? They told me no, that when you call 311, the Sanitation Dept. moves.
Just want to let my neighbors know.

311 seems to be one of the few things the city does right. There was a manhole cover outside my joint that was improperly seated or something and every time a car went over it, it made a loud BONKBONK (heh). I called 311 and they had it fixed the next day.

Hmm... I was thinking of calling 311 inregards to there being no working lamposts (or whatever you call them) on Bergen between Washington and Grand. It gets really dark over there, creepy after the car places are closed.

I had to do the same thing with the lampost outside my home. I called 311 and they connected me to the proper place (I think it was the Dept. of Transportation) and somone was there the next day and within the month I had a brand new pole installed. So I do think that 311 is a great program
PS - I just found the # they gave me for Dept. of Transportation (718) 786-4594 -
311 sucks for me. in my old place there was a tree infected with termites and it took them a year to a few months get someone over from the parks depart. to check it out. and they cut it down and the stump is still there lol.

Okay, I just called the Dept. of Transporation lets see how long it takes before the lights are back on... -
I called 311 a few months back to get the streetlights repaired in Mt Prospect park.. It took them a month but it got done. No idea if 311-calling had anything to do with it or not.
Now, if the neighborhoodies would stop breaking the tops of those lights.. -
