museums, shops, zoo in brooklyn?

Hi,
I moved here in the fall but haven't been out to really explore my Brooklyn neighborhood. I now have family coming in and am looking for suggestions on where to take them. There'll be an infant, my ailing father and others so...is there a good zoo in Brooklyn? What museum would you recommend? Is there an area with good shops, coffee houses, cafe, etc? Thanks for any suggestions...

My kids loved the Brooklyn Zoo. It's small but intimate. The Mere cats are particularly fun to watch, especially when they eat their young.

The Brooklyn Zoo would interest Toddlers and a little older than that group. It would be of no interest to an infant. the Brooklyn Museum is a nice outting for the group that you describe. If your ailing father has difficulty walking that might limit how much time he can spend in a museum but the size is modest and I believe there ar wheelchairs available (call ahead).

Nothing is of any interest to an infant, except for food and pooping. That said, the prospect park zoo is an EXCELLENT outing all year long. Kid friendly, small enough not to tire out kids and old people. Right next to the carousel. All and all, a lovely day out. We used to go every weekend, just to get out.

The Brooklyn Museum is one of the best museums in the US, and has the second best collection of Egyptian artifacts in the world (after the British Museum).

the brookyn botanic garden is right there too, and it goes without saying what a wonder that it.

The Zoo in Prospect Park is great because it is tight. Not a giant zoo like in the Bronx. The walk through the Park can be half the fun. Also the Audubon Center is by the Lake over there.

Also think about the Brooklyn Children's Museum.

Subject: Transit Museum

Only 2 subway stops from PS, the Transit Museum is sure to entertain young and old. My wife and I, in our early 30's, geeked out there recently and vowed to bring her father and our young nieces and nephews there when they visit.

the prospect park zoo is very small. its worth seeing if your in brooklyn, but not worth making a trip to from outside brooklyn

the aqaurium in coney island is really great though. thats wortth a trip from outside brooklyn.

really? i thought the coney island aquarium was an embarrassment. the animals are neat and everything, but the displays are in awful shape. certainly the worst aquarium i've ever seen in a city of any real size.

for an infant and your dad -- who probably mostly wants to see you and the kid, right? -- i vote bbg and the park.

Yea, the best thing about the aquarium is the parking lot (free for members of the Bronx Zoo) and its bathrooms. I use them when I take the kids to the beach. Otherwise it is a disappointment.
