My dog needs a bath
And I don't want to do it. She needs her nails clipped too. Just a simple bath and nail cutting, no grooming or clipping.
And, yeah, I am too damned lazy to do it myself. So, where's the cheapest place I can take her to in the neighborhood ? Hows that Paws In Paradise place? Pricey? Other recommends?

Well, in case anyone cares, I looked around and it seems people want $35 for a bath and $15 for a nail clipping and that is way too much in my book. But, what did i expect, right?

That does seem ridiculous, especially in these hard economic times. Pet grooming is one of those luxury items people will cut back on. I got a card the other day from a "pet stylist" named Laura Gil who operates out of her home. She is probably not in your neck of the woods since she was passing out cards at Smith Pet Foods in Carroll Gardens (or is it Cobble Hill?). If you want to check her out, her e-mail is [email protected] and her phone # is 917-539-3355. I've been thinking about using her for Louie, whose nails are getting very long, but I'm hesitating because of the likely logistical problems of getting him over to her place, as we are in BH and Louie does not like to walk much.

I paid that for my dog once. I think it's crazy, too. My dog has short hair! All he needed was a bath and a nail trim. 50 bucks is way too much for that.

Did you call Brooklyn Dog House? They seem to have cheaper than average services. Those prices actually sound cheaper than when I called some placed last summer.
I just furmiated my dog as prep to bathe him this weekend. Even with his dense coat and hatred of being wet, for me it's just easier to bathe him myself than to trek somewhere and pay someone else. I also grew up being the main dog bather in a home that always had at least one dog, if not several with all the other pets so maybe I'm just used to it. I'd rather wash the dog than scrub a tough to clean pot! -

Ha...it's a lot easier to clean up the mess of my own pup than another
I clear the bathroom of most stuff (tp, towels, electric heater, and rugs) before the bath. Also, I'm a pack rat and have lots of old towels that are dog/rainy day towels to help soak up the aftermath of a few drying off shakes.
I can't bring myself to even try cutting my dog's nails. -

If you take a look at rant and rave, maybe you can get Carmen to take a shower with your dog :-) -
Seriously. Just take your dog over to Carmen's house. S/he may come back emotionally scarred but s/he won't stink.

I do take my 2 malts to Posh Pets once a year for their haircuts for the summer. I like them a lot but they are expensive. Both dogs together weigh about 18 pounds and their haircuts and bath is $100 each.

Knowing your great love for all animals ring, i am going to bring her to your house tomorrow around noon while all the kids are at school, i figure you could give her a bath! LMAO

I caved and took her to Paw in Paradise. Everyone I called was the same price, if not more. And Paws is close to me and they had an open appointment. They were very nice, did a good job and she looked all shiny and nice when i picked her up. They also didn't give me a hard time about not having her vax papers (do people really keep those things???).
The one thing that bothered me slightly is they had quoted me $35 for a bath on the phone and then when they saw her-they said they were going to charge me $45 because she a medium/large dog. Seriously, how do they gauge these things? She weighs 30 1/2 lbs.! (I weighed her while there). But, in the end, charged me the original $35.
I figured I never ever do this and spend this kind of money on her and with the warm weather coming, i will do baths out in the yard soon, so, this was a one time deal. Though, i would bring her back there for nail cutting, they did a great job with that. They also do doggy daycare if anyone cares. -
Just wanted to update - today Louie went to Laura Gil (the dog groomer I posted about above). $30 for shampoo, cleaning ears and nail clipping. She was very nice, did a great job and gave Louie a shamrock bandanna, which he hates. When he got home, he promptly went out in the yard and rolled around in the dirt.
And Louie has a girlfriend! He hooked up with her at the Union Square dog run yesterday:

Everybody loves Louie and he loves them (except my male cat Raoul, who despises him). When we take him out for a walk, it's amazing how many people stop to squee over him. If you were to meet him, he would try to follow you. As a guard dog, he would be an epic fail, but he rocks as a canine ambassador of good will.
