Eh, not interested. And you invaded a thread that I had been posting on, typically I do avoid you. You've actually become really boring. It was mildly entertaining in the beginning. Now it's just dumb. And boring. Maybe start posting as a "neuvo" "park" "sloper" to get everyone really riled up about the "old" "timers" ? Actually it gives me great comfort that you are so miserable in your "life". Nighty night.
Now why don't we get this thread back to the original topic of Park Slope supermarkets, shall we?
Sorry, it wasn't an invitation to converse with me, but rather an invitation for you to focus on someone else. I apologize for the misunderstanding.
As for my "misery," I know it's difficult for you to imagine, but my portrayal of a persona on an online message board encompasses maybe 5% of the actual real life "me." But then again, if your image of me being "miserable" is how you rationalize a guy like me away, then by all means have at it, because remember--thanks to your kind, my real life "misery" increases in value to the tune of a cool mil every five years or so. Goodness, how ever will I go on like this?

Uh, right. You're funny!

Shepherd's pie and the curry veg is a good (and slightly more healthy) meal. One pie doesn't quite cut it for supper. -
muggle wrote: "i believe the same peeps that own Union Market own Gourmet Garage."
Perhaps it's because Amish Market has been screwing their workers?
That's funny, because I like GG, love Amish Market, but I think Union Market is way overpriced. I'll still stop in the former places when I'm in Manhattan. I can't understand why Amish can rent those gigantic spaces all over Manhattan - they own the Zeytuna place in the financial district, Zeytins on Bryant Park, and others - and yet charge lower prices than Union Market. Can the rents be higher in Park Slope than in Manhattan, so the merchants charge more? I picked up a French bread at one of those last week - it was $1.99 - the same thing costs $2.39 here in the Slope. Meats at Union Market are insanely expensive, IMO.Amish Market Groceries Cheated Workers Out of Overtime

I do not take him seriously.

I don't even think Obamanut takes themselves seriously!

I know it's baffling, but what you've got to realize is that's part of the whole appeal of these places. Places like "Union Market" charge exorbitant prices for pedestrian goods on purpose.
If you haven't noticed, nuevo-Park Slopers take great joy in overpaying for run-of-the-mill products and services as long as the atmosphere in which they're shopping is sufficiently pretentious--rent, kids clothing, and ESPECIALLY groceries. In fact, if given a choice between a regular grocery store charging regular prices and a 'pretentious' store charging two dollars more for the very same item, nuevo-Slopers will pointedly flock to the overpriced one. That is why "Union Market" has such a following in this "affluent" area.
The irony is that the supermarkets in the Upper East Side, which is where all the REAL money is in this city, offer much more reasonable prices on groceries, because the people there are actually smart and frugal about where they shop and refuse to overpay for anything (which is probably how their families became so rich to begin with).
what a bunch of overgeneralizsed baloney!!!!!!!!!! -
Me, i shop at 5th avenue key food
Back on topic, how do you know the Hollywood Video spot has been rented and any clues as to what is going there? -
Doldrums, agreed. If what Obamanut wrote was true, D'Agostinos would still be here.
-
LongTimeSloper - As I mentioned before, a friend was looking to open a party good store and he said that he was looking for a large space (around 6000 sq feet). I told him about hollywood and said that I am not sure how big the space is, but I do know its for rent.
He was not too excited at first because he was sure the rent would be very high. He said that he was looking to spend $50-55 per sq/ft for rent and believed the area would command much more. I told him that he will never know till he called.
When he called he was informed that the space is 4500sq ft and in contract and there is a 90% chance its a done deal. The landlord asked him to call back in 2 days to find out if the deal went through.
He called 2 days later and the landlord informed him that its 100% rented. It was mentioned that the "for rent" sign is still posted on the building....but i guess the landlord just forgot or did not bother with taking it off right away.
Anyway, my friend is now looking for a space in sunset park. -
ljnd wrote: Doldrums, agreed. If what Obamanut wrote was true, D'Agostinos would still be here.
D'Agostino's went under because they catered to the 'original' Park Slope yuppie crowd of the 1980's and 90's, who were really more like displaced Manhattanites than anything else. That's why D'Agostino's was basically nothing more than an UWS (at that time) grocery store plopped down into Park Slope. In fact, D'Agostino's came from Manhattan to begin with. Originally there were none in Brooklyn, and if I'm not mistaken, 7th Ave was the first and last location in BK.
Anyway, as the original working business yuppies were gradually replaced by our current, hyper-self-important, frump-leisure-yuppie population, D'Agostino's lost its customer base because it simply wasn't pretentious enough in the right way. It was more of a "BMW-and-designer-clothing-wearer" overpriced and pretentious than a "Subaru-station-wagon-and-Tibetan-babysling-wearer" pretentious. Believe it or not, there's a big difference.
So there you have your explanation of why D'Agostino's didn't last and "Union Market" is now the king. -

Show me where the new large and reasonably priced supermarkets are opening and thriving in Park Slope. Show me some Subaru station-wagon-drivers and Tibetan babysling-wearers clipping coupons, flocking in to catch the latest sales specials, and trying to get the best deals on groceries, before you offhandedly dismiss my almost-three decades of observation of this neighborhood as "overgeneralized baloney." -

i heard that the key food on 7th is doing better business than they've done in years.
and tonight, in front of me in line was a woman with a whole envelope of coupons.
and a $1000 purse. -

for crying out loud! you are a f'ing piece of work, always screeching the same darned tune!
Look at both Key Food stores, they both do a thriving business as does the Pathmark you love. -

Not worth the energy, LTS. Obamanut is out of touch and has no idea what is going on in NY these days, that tens of thousands of people are losing their jobs on a daily basis and therefore need to save money everywhere they can.

We've already established that he's a trustfunder and drinks PBR while waiting to inherit a rent controlled building from his Mom. -

You have a point, those people perpetually flocking into Union Market for $8 olives and focaccia bread sure like they're feeling the pinch. It's a wonder they manage to scrape by and make ends meet. I hope they'll be ok!

Nuevo-Slope Subaru station-wagon-drivers and Tibetan babysling-carriers don't use or buy "$1000 purses" (despite the fact that they can afford them more than just about anyone). They sneer and roll their eyes at things like that. Try again.

HA! I love the way the Onut addresses the fact that he's a trustfunder waiting to inherit a family building he did absolutely nothing to earn. Meaning, not at all.

You got me alright; all those years I spent as a kid running around the plush and safe streets of 1980's and early 90's Park Slope with kids who are now dead or in jail, the one thought that kept crossing my mind was how lucky and privileged I was. I wouldn't dare put my meager life experience up against those hardscrabble, no-nonsense go-getters who currently fill the brownstones of this neighborhood, who grew up under such hard circumstances and worked tooth and nail for what they have. I mean, you can just look in these people's eyes and see what hard lives they've had.
Anyway, though, this thread is about (a) empty store space in Park Slope; and (b) what sorts of business we would or wouldn't like to see in that store space. How about diverting your energy to the topic at hand instead of me for a change. -

Actually, this thread is all about ONut and rants against "neuvo" slopers as is every thread you post on. How about diverting your energy to an intelligent dialogue for a change. Dude, you're a troll. -

Now, GETTING BACK TO THE TOPIC... -
ech.. another Hijacked Obanut thread that I will not post to any more.
Trust fund or not let us remember he told us that every 4 years or so he earns his OWN one Million dollars! Yeah sure. -
Unfortunately, no one on this board wants to debate any topic with you. You will, however, find people who think your troll observations are obnoxious and want to rail at you. Have fun with that. I'm done with you, Nut. Enjoy your inheritance.
-
Hey, Nut. One more thing. I will say you actually have some valid points. You grew up in Park Slope, a bunch of rich people invaded it and turned it into something you really dislike, but you still like the neighborhood cause it's home. That, I can actually relate to.
Just discuss it like a normal human being. When you throw shit around like neuvo this and that and I am tossing women over my shoulder, you'll never be taken seriously and you'll never be able to reasonably talk about what is really bugging you. My 2 cents. -

Mods, ruling please..... -
Are we now discussing masturbation? Because any topic would be better than Onut
-
Obamanut...just to get your facts straight...there was a Dag over in Brooklyn Heights long before PS. And the reason I shopped there at one time: I lived a couple of blocks away (at the time C-Town was not very nice) and I don't have a car. But I guess you'll judge me anyway.
And no, I didn't grow up here but I've been here over 30 years...there was still a Pioneer and a Bohack here. And I've never been sorry that Dag took over that Associated...I stopped shopping there when I opened chicken I just bought there and it was bad...and the seeds in my bread were moving. I'll take Dag anytime (even with the higher prices) than that.
Does Jane Goodall know that you're saying you're like her - she would be quite upset.
