Dog owners

I'm a new dog owner and totally clueless. I want to socialize with other dog owners so that my pup can get socialized. Apart from the park, any suggestions. She gets to meet lots of other dogs in the pet store on 5th Ave.

Sadly people tend to laugh when they see my little dog. She is very very small :D

the park is your best bet.

wait 'til it gets a little warmer and go to the nether mead after 5pm.

it becomes a doggie riviera, with dogs and their owners blanketing the lawn in a socializing frenzy -- every butt gets a good sniffing

    there's also the doggie beach{just a piece of sloped concrete really}
it's closed now -- but as soon as it gets warmer....
  • Doggie beach is now open! It's still a little cold out for a swim but it was getting lots of use when we had the warm weather a week or so back.
  • Here's some knowledge, hard-won by some people: Keep your dog away from Terry the Deerhound and his clueless walker/owners. Apparently he's bitten a few dogs in the park.
  • JJ Byrne has a small dog run (next to the Old Stone House)
  • Did your new puppy get shots to guard against giardia? Until after their 4 month shots new puppies should be kept away from other dogs.

There is really no other doggie paradise, especially for socializing, then the Park - there are several hundred dogs together during some stretches of the Spring and Summer.

And btw, there is no other dog run in NYC like the one in the Park either. For that you can thank FIDO Brooklyn ...

So there is a dog run where it is safe for them to be off leash? My breed of dog (Miniature Pinscher) are known for running away and doing disappearing acts. So she cannot be off the leash unless the space is enclosed.

the JJ Byrne dog run is your best bet for a dog run

prospect park itself doesn't have a "dog run"

tho' prospect park itself is a huge dog run during offleash hours

to cure your dog's disappearing acts, you might wanna consider a trainer
  • Hopefully off-leash hours will continue at Prospect Park, but apparently it is under threat from some litigeous Queens residents:

If you are worried about your dog running away you can bring your dog to Prospect Park on leash and let her socialize. In reality until your dog is properly trained she should rarely be off-leash anyway , that way you can immediatly correct any unsocial behavior and reward good behavior - additionally a great way to properly train to come back when called is with a long leash.
  • I have a minpin also, although he's a whopping 25 pounder. Get her a "fishing line" type leash when she's old enough, then she can run around and socialize in the park, but you'll still have control.

NO! never get those 'fishing line' type leashes!!!

i still have the scars around my leg from having a dog run itself
'round and 'round my legs and the owner, in a vain attempt
to control their dog, pulling HARD on the leash
and nearly cutting my leg off below the knee

those things are dangerous. convenient but dangerous
    i spit on those leashes!
    spit!
    spit!
    spit!

and i don't care how cute SJE is
i still spit on your 'fishing line' leash...
    spit!spit!spit!
  • Subject: leash laws

Aren't those fishing-line leashes actually illegal? New York City law requires a six foot maximum leash, unless law has changed.

As a runner, I have nearly been kneecapped with those leashes by someone's darting dogs numerous times. I don't really mind the leashes as long as the owner is aware and considerate. But especially in the park, some are not.

I think when some people get in the park -- thinking of it as a doggie safe haven -- their consciousness-of-other-pedestrians radar shuts off.

    they should be illegal

i cringe when i see someone in the park with one,
wrestling with a small dog running on the leash
and the plastic line is just about to wrap around a person's neck
and by some miracle it doesn't happen
    and everybody keeps laughing

    those leashes are dangerous
  • oh yea. the post above is mine.
    forgot to login
  • Ok! Forget the fishing line! But don't forget the dog in question is a tiny minpin, I can walk mine with one finger. We're not talking 100 lbs of dog here. It was only a suggestion to get the dog socialized without it running off. *sigh*
  • you can also get a training lead. It's a long lease, about 25 ft, but very light and floats in the water. When we first took our dog off leash we left that on him, he was able to run around without really noticing it but if he took off he was easy to catch since we only had to get within 25 ft of him to grab the leash or step on it.

It's also useful in training them to come to you on command, you can gently pull them towards you from a distance and then reward them with a treat.

We only had to use if for a week and then he was fine, now he never gets too far away and always responds when called.
