Union and 6th avenue, friday night fight + cops

ndegeo
edited November -1 in Park Slope
anyone know what took place friday night around 10ish.

there were a ton of kids running (into union market)/ and screaming. a handful of cops screaming at the kids in front of the photography place next to union market. 1 cop pushed a kid away from him...

does any one have any information on what took place. i wanted to stay to make sure these kids were treated justly ...but didn't.

  • Why didn't you?
  • do you mean wee wittle kids or punks(teens). punks should be beaten about, since they got more rights than anyone alive.

Sorry to disagree with you AW - when you beat em up you wind up with incidents like this

but how many teens in this country get away with tons of law breaking and get kiddy jail or nothing. The general public fears teens. I see group of teens cross the st. cause they know they can get away with alot of stuff. If I beaten a teen up i'll probably goto jail even in self defense.

What an ignorant comment after this article was posted to you. It's ok a teen died because in your little mind teens get away with tons of law breaking. Genius.

we are all generalizing here, ignorance is pretend things don't happen.
  • Teens should be making babies, not fighting with each other. Kids today!

YOU are what's wrong with New York. If a snot nose punk gets a beat down from a cop - rest assured he had it coming and you should thank the officer for making the street safer for your nancy ass to prance down.
  • fenian, it's time for you and obamanut to share an apartment... somewhere far, far away.
  • Teens should be separated from the general population.

You have a point: without guys like us around, the dozens of undisciplined, out-of-control, drugged-up teens who hang out in front of Pino's and PS 321 every weekend will have carte blanche to do and say whatever they want to whoever they want on 7th Avenue, since they won't have to worry about the possibility of anyone with a set of balls being around--especially since local residents will chase the cops away for trying to maintain order.

but how many bankers in this country get away with tons of law breaking and get kiddy jail or nothing. The general public fears bankers. I see group of bankers cross the st. cause they know they can get away with alot of stuff. If I beaten [sic] a banker up i'll probably goto jail even in self defense.
  • All I can say at this thread is...wow.

May I interrupt this bickering to offer my sympathies to anyone who knew Sharif - I saw the makeshift memorial on Sunday while walking the furry one around the park and was wondering what the story was. And my heart also goes out to those kids - maybe it's because I lost a close friend when I was in HS many years ago, but...that stuff sticks with you.

lets not change the subject here, but those snot nose punks are mostly likely future lawyers and bankers :p.

I remember one time back in the early 90s I was at a keg party in Owls Head Park in Bay Ridge...a kid from school that was there threw a punch at one of the cops who showed up to bust up the party...he got the everliving shit beaten out of him that night. Needless to say he never so much as talked back to a cop again for as long as I knew him.

  • Most of these kids have been treated so "fairly" theyre' unafraid to give a beat down to those who disagree. Thanks liberals!! And when they're beating up their bus drivers...and teachers, and other kids, you can rest assured they've learned their lessons in self esteem. They've been treated so "fairly" they own you now. Look out!

Let me say one thing.... the teens are not at fault here.

one case has nothing to do with the other.

its like me saying, we shouldn't go outside cause somebody got hit by lightning, very ridiculous.

AW the reason I posted that article is to show that not all teens are trouble makers. There are more teens that you don't notice because they are not making a scene or causing trouble. I just get upset when people make blanket statements about any type of group because it is how hate spreads.

The young man who was killed was being a good person by sticking up for a friend. He thought he was doing the right thing and then an adult assaults him and causes his death really disgusts me especially as a mother of an "almost" teen.

Many of these teens are loud and obnoxious but that doesn't make them bad kids. These kids may have the body and look of an adult but they are still young in the mind. Shit I was one of those bad ass teens and if it wasn't for a few adults who put me in my place and really showed an interest in me I don't know where or what I would be doing now.
  • It also doesn't mean that they deserve to die!
  • I love how people talk about "teens" like they're some seperate species. We were all that age once and its not like any of us got to the age we are now without going through the teen years (you can't just skip them.) I totally agree with stacey about the blanket generlizations and I find it kind of appalling that so many people from such a "liberal" neighborhood are making such huge sweeping statements. Are there a lot of annoying teenagers? Sure. But there are a lot of annoying adults too...there are a lot of annoying PEOPLE in general and treating an individual or group disrespectfully simply breeds more disrespect.
  • anecdotes sure make you feel self righteous, don't they? but guess what, jumpin in a fight cause someone "dissed" you or your friends' GF is bullshit. he didn't deserve to die (duh) but i would hope my children would get the fk out of a brawl. what did they think was gonna happen when they started fighting? guess what--teenagers haven't developed that cranial capacity that would give them pause. they feel immortal--as we all once did--as our children will--and that's why we protect them with helmets and laws. but you can't stop teens from being teens--facts are facts.
"Teenagers are four times as likely to be involved in a car crash and three times more likely to die in one than adults according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Recent studies have shown that these statistics may have to do with teenage brain development.

A National Institutes of Health study proposes that the part of the brain that restrains risky behavior, including reckless driving, and thinking skills is not fully developed until the age of 25."

I hope kids and everyone else has the sense to keep out of fights -- too bad it was an ADULT, a parent of one of the kids involved, who (according to the news reports anyway) killed the teen in Prospect Park.
  • I love the correlation arguments made into causal fact-

Teens have more car accidents=because of brain development?

Orrr maybe driving experience? I'd be willing to bet new adult drivers have much higher rates of vehicle accidents than other more experienced adult drivers. I'm not saying teens don't act retarded a lot of the time, but not everyone under the age of 25 is a total moron incapable of comprehending cause and effect and regulating his/her actions.
  • "The frontal area of the brain again comes into play when viewing the adolescent tendency, or lack thereof, to seek rewards and avoid stress. The motivation to weigh costs and benefits of actions, dictated by the nucleus accumbens of the frontal cortex, is less developed in the teen years (Wallis, 2004). "

insert your "I did ____ but I survived" as per usual, since your personal experience trumps the facts.
protect teens from themselves--by recognizing they ARE different.

the NY Daily News article wrote: Sharif confronted the punks and sent them scurrying. They returned with one of their fathers, and that's when punches began to fly, police said.
The article suggests that the physical fight didn't begin until the father came. And it also says that the kid collapsed after being punched while trying to "get the fk out."

Regardless - I hope none of the family/friends of the kids involved read this board. The discussion of the event - of which none of us really has personal knowledge - has been at best disrespectful. Sharif is dead; leave him out of your anger at teens, he tried to do good.

I didn't say all teens :p, only the bad ones that cause trouble, I was asking the op if it was teens or kids, i said i don't like teens(the trouble making ones if they were by the op). this has nothing to do with any other teen besides op's if they are teens.
  • Are there a lot of annoying teenagers? Sure. But there are a lot of annoying adults
The saving grace about teenagers is that most will grow out of being annoying as they grow up. The same cannot be said about annoying adults.
  • "Teens are stupid"
    "No they're not"
    "You're stupid"
    "Shut up"

Wasn't this already covered in the chip shop thread?
