Electricians

This is probably a common request, but we may need an electrician soon.
On Union Street this week, we had a partial power outage, which Con Ed addressed and almost fully restored. EXCEPT, our 220 volt plugs are not working. Con Ed have been back twice but no dice. We are on a Con Ed "follow-up" list.

So, pro-actively - anyone know a good electrician?

  • Where/what power outage on Union Street?

I just rec'd my small jobs electrician on another thread...and when I remember the guy that did bigger rewiring dealing with creepy-old-building electricity, I'll post.
  • Sounds like a con ed problem that they need to fix, not for you to come out of pocket. they are probably only feeding you one leg, not the 2 needed for 220. Check all the outlets and lights in your house to make sure they are all are working.
  • yeah, it could be a con ed problem or it could be in your building. I had a situation a few years ago where a feeder burned out on the street (actually about 150' from my building, I had a pretty good idea of where it was by the smell), taking out most of one side of the street. Because I was the first person to call, con ed insisted the problem was in my building and I needed to have a private electrician come look at it...so I went out on the street, spoke to my neighbors and told them to all go inside and call con ed...if they get a cluster of calls about the same problem, they'll do something about it. Otherwise they try to pawn it off as not their problem.
  • What you are describing is almost definitely a Con Ed problem NOT yours. Most likely one leg of your 220 service is out, giving you partial service. Call Con Ed and DEMAND an answer. Don't start spending unnecessarily on an electrician.
