Maybe moving to Ft. Greene, need info!
Hi everyone! I'm a 21 year old college student, and I'm looking at an apartment near the Clinton/Washington subway stop. I walked around the neighborhood at night and day, and am fairly satisfied, but I wanted to hear from real people who live there how the neighborhood is. I read the posting on the shooting at Myrtle Ave: does this happen often? Is it a dangerous area? Can I, as a white 21 yr old woman, feel safe?
I would deeply appreciate any/all info you can give me. Thank you so much!

Subject: ft. greene/clinton hill...
ive rented many apartments in the area (my office is on lafayette at fulton)... the shooting is an isolated incident. the nabes are awesome with lots of great things to do. if you can tell what block you're lookin on, i can tell you about the immediate area.

That's where I live too, and I feel it is quite safe. Once in a while I feel uneasy walking on Myrtle at night, but it's never enough to scare me or make me avoid it, just enough to put me on my guard. It's a great neighborhood, and beautiful to boot.

My girlfriend and I have lived in Clinton Hill for almost a year now, we love it.
We love the area. We live near the intersection of Hall Street and Myrtle Avenue. There's great restaurants and bars within a few blocks. The Associated supermarket on the corner is one of the nicer markets I've been to in Brooklyn. Most of the blocks around us have rows of pretty townhomes. For the first time in my NY life I've gotten to know my neighbors. They're mostly families or young peope like myself. We also have a lot of good friends who live in the neighborhood.
Ft. Greene park is beautiful, and there's a pretty good farmer's market there.
I find the G train to be useful during rush hour but kinda slow late-nights and weekends. But then again, what train isn't slow at those times? I work in lower Manhattan and it takes me 30 minutes door-to-door.
It's quiet, friendly, pretty and has good amenities. We love it.
The shooting that was mentioned here happened at the projects further down Myrtle Avenue. The crime situations in the project hi-rises and the blocks of brownstones where I live are quite different. But yeah, I'd avoid the projects after dark. -
I’ve lived near the corner of Putnam and Irving for about six years now. Sometimes it looks like a scary neighborhood buy it’s really pretty safe. Once in a while you’ll see the occasional drug deal, or the always exciting and unpredictable drug deal gone sour, but our car or house has never been broken into, and neither I nor my wife has ever been mugged (knock on wood). We’ve been seeing beat cops patrolling on foot lately and there’s so much traffic around the clock in the nabe that it doesn’t feel dangerous. That being said, I think you have to be observant, as in any urban situation, when you’re walking around. It’s not cowardly to cross the street if you see a knot of street toughs talking loudly and waving guns around (kidding, but you know what I mean). I used to live in Boerum Hill and we had a lot more problems; our car windows were broken (it seemed) monthly in an attempt to rifle the glove box and I once caught a burglar trying to jimmy his way into my house with a rusty screwdriver. That kind of stuff doesn’t happen here. Oh and there’s so many good restaurants opening lately….try Kush on Putnam. Welcome to the neighborhood!

I actually had to look up on Google Maps where Putnam and Irving was. I don't exactly consider it the same neighborhood as the Clinton-Washington G stop!

ooops, sorry I read the post real quick -- I was thinking Clinton Washington on the "C" -- Be that as it may, it's not that different, the houses there might be a little more expensive, but there are no Starbucks in either neighborhood (yet)

Actually, I just assumed it was the G - reading the first post, it's not clear. So perhaps you are right after all!

Thanks so much everyone, this has greatly helped my decision!

ok, similar issue, but I didn't think it warrented a new topic/subject. I just looked at a place on lefferts pl. between Franklin and Classon. It is ridiculously cheap, so of course, that worries me. The neighborhood looked fine during the day, but I haven't gone back at night yet (I plan to tonight or tomorrow). Anyone live on the block or immediate area who can tell me what they think (oh, and I am a SWF).
Thanks -
I live on lefferts between grand and classon. here's the all out truth. most of the time it is lovely.
during the day there are kids playing out on the streets, there are nice people who live on the block between classon and franklin, i walk down it on my way to the subway and always get smiles and hellos. there is a really strong block association that meets monthly at our wonderful coffee shop on Fulton.
here's the bad news, there is a night club (I think that is what it is) on that block somewhere. i haven't figured out where, but it is really really loud. we didn't know it was there until the weather got nice enough to open the windows at night. we don't hear it since our bedroom is on the lefferts side, and the nightclub is on the fulton side. so do yourself a favor and check out the block on a weekend night. seriously.
the area is mostly safe, the corner of putnam and st. james is apparently problematic. last weekend we had some excitement. a shooting on the corner of classon and fulton. i heard the shots and withing seconds (truly) there were swarms of cop cars all over the place. don't really know what happened, but watched the cops and the detectives for about an hour. couldn't hear what was said because of the loud music from the nightclub.
if you want more information on the neighborhood you could check out my blog and some of the links: eatingclintonhill.blogspot.com. or contact me directly....
