Eastern Athletic Clubs

Has anyone had a good/bad experience with Eastern Athletic Club on Eastern Parkway? My boyfriend and I are thinking of joining a local gym, and due to the overwhelming negative comments on Park Slope Sports Club we're thinking of checking out EAC. I'd appreciate any commnents you might have!

  • i was a member for 3 years and liked the place. i only used the pool - which is a nice one - don't know about the other facilities.

when it came time to un-join, the process was painless.
  • Subject: EAC

EAC is okay. I mostly went to the ones in Tribeca and Brklyn Heights, but have been to the eastern pkwy one a few times. They're all a bit dark and dingy, and they unfortunately just tore down the bball court in BH to put up kids facilities. There's a rim in east pkwy, and a pool, and the freeweights/machines are so-so. A plus is that it's rarely crowded.
  • i would basically agree with that assessement. it's ok, but not amazing. i prefer New York Sports, there's one in Park Slope.
  • I was a member for several years but recently quit. If you swim or play basketball it is great. Otherwise, it is expensive ($90 a month if you pay for a year, closer to $100 per if you opt for monthly payment) and inconvenient. Because it is connected to a temple it is closed on Friday nights, Saturday mornings and all major Jewish holidays.

The fascilities are not that great - but you can see that when you take a tour. The pool in the prosepct park location is nice. The clubs are not very crowded which is a plus compared to some other places.
The Tribeca club is quite nice but it doesn't have a pool.

I have been a member for about two years so I guess I like it enough to stick around.
  • Subject: temple

being connected to the temple theoretically should not be that big of a problem, esp since there are two other bklyn locations, one in bklyn heights (just hop on the 1 train if you are desperate for a workout, to clark st) or there is also a location at metrotech in the marriott hotel.

i hear the marriott hotel is 'dope'.

I belong to EAC solely for the pool and think it's worth it. The pool has four lanes. The inner two lanes are reserved for single person swimming for 20-minute intervals. The outer two lanes can have a maximum of four people (one is slow, one is fast). It's not usually crowded anyway, but having the option to swim alone for 20 minutes is great. If you do want a lane to yourself you may have to wait 10-20 minutes until one opens up -- a great time for some stretching or hanging in the sauna next to the pool.

I've had a good experience with them, especially compared to NYSC. I live in Bklyn Hts, thought I'd be using the Clark St. facility but once I started going to Metrotech I got hookedon the 75-foot pool that's rarely crowded in the evening when I go. Good facilities and a generally laid-back feel.
  • YMCA on 9th St. it's a bit far but worth it...only $45/ month. and your money goes back to the community.
  • Subject: Thanks for your comments

Thanks for your comments everyone. I really appreciate all the input. We're going to take tour and go from there.
