At least the ones who answer the phone. Or, more accurately, answer the phone after 10 rings by picking it up and letting it drop back into the cradle.
I Agree....through my experiences and a few conversations about the 68 with cops I know, the general consensus is the same as yours. -

Just counting offhand, between Kin, cousins and close friends I know 5 people well that are on the job or retired. If you go out to guys I grew up with or went to school with then you are probably out to 20 or more. Of the cops I know well I could only really say that I could see 1 of them being an asshole in uniform, that's mostly because he is incredibly short tempered and somewhat arrogant. The rest of them I would honestly say are good people and I can't imagine them being anything other then reasonable level headed people when they are on duty.
I never said they were all heroes. That's what things like the Medal of Honor and Combat Cross are for. What I said was that, in my book, your typical cop or serviceman deserves more respect than Lucas the graphic designer from Park Slope. That's all.
Just being a cop doesn't automatically mean that they are all great people that deserve to be treated like kings...That being said, they are all still strapping a gun to their bodies everyday and putting on a bullet proof vest and accepting a level of risk on a daily level that most people never have to accept and in that sense I agree with O-nut that they deserve a little more respect... -
Ironically, I had to deal with a bunch of absolute scum-of-the-earth shithead cops from the 63 at work last night. 2 troglodytes and their ass of a sergeant. They upheld every worst stereotype of misogynist thuggish behavior by the NYPD. I'm thankful that's relatively unusual for me.
