Benny's Barber Shop on 5th
Subject: Benny's Barber Shop on 5th
Just got my third haircut there this morning. Owner seems a bit dejected with business. He's trying to give people an affordable, good haircut, but people see "$12 haircut" on the door and think he's selling drugs.......so here'a plug for Benny's. Take it or leave it. I've been there three times now after about seven years of the Park Slope Barber. Nice guys, nice place, good haircut and, as was put so eloquently on here, you won't necessarily come out of there looking like Ted Baxter. Give 'em some business before they become another baby shop selling toddler Megadeth shirts. I already know 10 places where I can get one of those.
If we can support 30 friggin nail shops on 5th avenue, we can support one decent barber shop.

Sold, mate. Isn't it funny how you can go into a barbershop and just say, "Just give me a regular cut" and the guy knows what to do? the onyl thing is learning each person's idea of short. One guy at PSBS does "short" the way I like, the others "short" is really, really short.
I also get a kick out of moms bringing in their sons...the moms are like, "Ooh, bastion of maleness, how curious this place is!" -
I've gotten two haircuts there. The cuts have been good, but I really dislike that they have the TV on the whole time, and my barber took repeated calls while cutting my hair. The bottom line, yes, the cuts were fine, but the atmosphere wasn't all that professional, so I was left with more mixed feelings about it than I had hoped.
-
OppossumQueen: it's 5th and Douglass, right next to Bogota.
Seespaces: i don't mind any of the guys at TPSB cutting my hair, except for the russian gentleman. he definitely has a different idea of "short."
what always helps me is being able to tell the person cutting my hair what number machine to use on the sides. most barbers are able to deal with "1 1/2 on the sides, tiny bit off the top."
BBD: i liked the plasma at Benny's, especially when they were playing "Donnie Brasco" last time. i don't know whether they'd have a full bar at Christmastime, though.
-
i would second j0518's plug for benny's. cut is good and affordable and quick. the guys there work hard and they deserve to succeed. and here's a plug for their plasma tvs, too.

What do you want him to do, recite motivational rhetoric to you while you're in the chair while classical music plays in the background? How about hypnotherapy?
"You are receiving my undivided attention, Brooklyn Baby Daddy. I am in this moment right now only for you."
Jeez, for a $12 haircut I don't care if he does it while sleepwalking as long as it comes out looking good. Not to mention, many people like the TV on while they're getting a haircut. And who cares about a barber shop's 'decor,' as long as it's clean?
Guess some people just need more attention in life? -
Benny's just opened a few months ago, what all the fuss about it going under?
And the line about selling drugs is absurd and offensive. The place has bright signage and an obvious "bran spankin new look" to it. How could anyone mistake it for a drug shop
If you want to support our old barbershops then there are plenty on 4th and further down on 5th ave that have been here longer and have a base of locals that have been going there for years. If Benny's is good, it will stay and survive. Good luck to them. -
no fuss at all. just gave it a mention stemming from a conversation with the owner while he was cutting my hair. i think the post was pretty self-explanatory, or at least it was to everyone else on here.

Brooklyn Baby Daddy represents everything that is wrong with Park Slope. Count me as one of the people who would rather hang out with real Brooklynites who were here back before every over-30's man was pushing a gigantic titanium baby stroller down 5th Ave. Places like Chandelier were created for pissy people like this. I guess if you pay 5 times the price you'll enjoy your haircut more even if it comes out worse. How did Brooklyn get to this point?!?

I don't get the big deal about a barber taking calls while cutting yoru hair as long as the haircut didn't suffer for it. i have been to salons where the woman doing my hair took a call or two and as long as my hair turned out fine and she wasn't yakking on the phone the whole time while actually doing my hair, who cares?? And to be griping about that for a $12 haircut at a barber? Come on! go to Michael's on 7th Avenue and pay $50 for your next haircut then!
Anyway, excited to see the recommends on this place, sounds like a place i should take my youngest to next time he needs a haircut. i used to take him to park Slope Barber (not the place on 7th avenue, the new place on 5th Avenue), but the wait is always horribly long there. Will check out Benny's next time.
Ugh, just noticed this thread is a year old, is this place still in business? -
Yes!!
I'm glad this thread was resurrected. Papi Chulo just went there for the second time so far and had a really good cut. I mean really good!! Some back ground so you can understand why I'm so excited about this place. First, he's been to all the $10 buck old man barbershops around here and his lovely hair has been chopped up and pruned badly by them all. I even sent him to Greenpoint to that Rockabilly barbershop, thinking that might be a better fit and they gave him a military cut (as in he left with almost no hair and needed to wear a hat for a month).
This place listened to him and was cheap. He refuses to go to a real salon (he insists on these neighborly barbershops) so this will be his go to place from now on. -
Hah, I just went there last Saturday to get a cut. I've always liked them.

OK, you just made me feel better mama. I am not into my youngest getting those typical chopped up little boy hair cuts, we like his hair longer and usually when we go to a barber, they don't listen and just do the normal little boy haircut which we hate. Will definitely check out Benny's next time

But where can I go for a proper shave? It's almost time for the annual de-bearding, and I'm unsure of where to go in the neighborhood. Soon, I will be totally unrecognizable from my avatar. I guess I'll have to update it.

Been here three times, and had a good haircut every time.
-
As with everyone else, been there plenty of times and have not had a bad haircut yet. It's worth the 20 blocks I walk to get there. They aslo have a frequent haircut card... 10 haircuts, the 11th free. Hot towel shaves are advertised as well.

Zing! Okay, I guess I will try to explain. A long time ago I read "Zen And The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." In it there is a passage that really stuck with me. He goes to get his motorcycle repaired and in the garage the mechanics are screwing around, and listening to really loud music and not concentrating on their jobs. This bugged him because he thought the mechanic should have concentration on his work.
That stuck with me. I like the idea of someone concentrating on my hair when they give me a haircut, not taking calls. I would like the same thing if they're working on my car or motorbike if I had one. I guess I'm weird. I don't need more attention, at least any more than anyone else here, but I do like it when my hair gets attention when getting a cut. To be fair the cuts turned out fine, but I didn't love the experience. I guess I'm nuts.
As for me being everything that's wrong with Park Slope, I am uncomfortable taking so much credit. I am sure there are many, many people who helped ruin Park Slope before I got here in 2004. And I no longer live in the 'Slope anyway, not that I don't miss it. I loved it, but we moved because we got priced out.
And I am very offended that you attacked my stroller. It's not titanium. It's platinum. Please apologize. -

Oh my gosh.. You are so cute with beard. Don't shave it off! -

I think they stopped the card. Probably not the best thing business-wise for them to do when struggling. the place is still empiter than you'd think the only barber shop in that immediate radius would be.
I'm not as gung-ho on them as I was when I first wrote this post, but I've still been going back. -

Aw, you're gonna make me blush. That's nice. Still, the beard is a winter only tradition that dates back 12 years or so, and its time has come. Don't worry, it begins its return on Labor Day. -
Subject: Another view
Been there twice. The first time came out feeling really positive about the haircut, thought they did a great job. The second time, an older gentleman cut my hair and it was the worst cut I've gotten in a very long time. I couldn't tell at first because he poofed out the front so that I looked like a successful 50-year old Eastern European businessman - not a put down on 50-year old Eastern European businessmen, but that wasn't the look I was going for. I figured it would be fine once I combed it out but it wasn't - not at all.
Avoid the older gentleman!!!! -

Didn't your original avatar have you sans beard? -

Maybe this place would offer more of the experience you're looking for (be sure to read the first 3 comments):

How do you find these gems Carny!?! -
OK, does anyone have a phone number for this place? Youngest child needs a haircut and I want to check them out but need to know their hours, etc.. Thanks
-
don't know the phone number, but i was there yesterday and noted that they keep pretty standard barber shop hours.

I have no idea what pretty standard barber shop hours are, but, I will figure it out, thanks.
