Union Temple Declares War on Photosynthesis — Brooklynian

Union Temple Declares War on Photosynthesis

So what the heck was that all about? I counted at least 12 tree stumps, some that were 1-2 feet in diameter.

The clear-cutting had the unexpected aftereffect of killing some of the old-growth weed forests that had thrived in the luxurious shade of the mulberry trees. This was sad, but it did expose a nice spare tire in excellent condition (already claimed), and a vintage nylon jacket that might have been from the '86 Lionel Richie tour -- unfortunately, the decal on the back was too weathered to confirm.

The Union Temple parking lot is EVENTUALLY going to be transformed into a 15-story condominium for well-heeled Brooklynites who can afford to pay upwards of $1000 per square foot (RBG: please let us know when the waiting list opens). The question remains: Are trees incompatible with architect Richard Meier's vision of obscene luxury?

So the clearcutting occurred several weeks ago. Did anybody see it? Anybody walked by there recently - any evidence that this was associated with construction of the condo?

  • I witnessed a mulberry-harvesting extravaganza by a couple of babysitters and their charges during the clear cutting. The berries did not go to waste, at least.
  • Who was doing the cutting?
  • The tree cutting is the initial step to pre-construction.
This is done to avoid many issues, including (And not limited to) passage obstruction for construction vehicles, not harming the trees.
But do not despair, the building must comply with code and replant trees on the sidewalk (NYC Dept of Bldgs/ DOT).

[deleted: insult-laden attack on "unemployed liberals" and "tree-huggers" "bitching" about tree issues, polluting the environment by turning on NPR, etc. Please see Supreme Court Decision thread for a thorough discussion of DH trampling on this anonymous poster's First Amendment rights.]
  • Yes... it's a good thing to do a little pruning now and again.
  • Those stray 0000111110000111 could make the place a tad ugly.
  • Sorta off-topic, but I'm reminded of this crazy homeless guy who cuts down trees near the Grand Army stop, I assume to make walking sticks, as he had a few carved ones piled up. He justs hops the fence into that little island of trees near the subway stop, whips out a banana saw and starts sawing away. I've yelled at him (only a little bit, dude's holding a saw and is crazy, mind you), complained to the cops that park near the stop in the morning and to the doorman of the nearby building (I don't know, last ditch effort or something), but he keeps coming back every month or so, killing young trees.

I was with you until the "not harming the trees" part.. :?

  • Union Temple won. Photosynthesis lost.

Everything green is now gone except for one tree on the corner.

  • You know, the spare tire went pretty quickly. I'm glad someone finally claimed that black nylon jacket that was sitting there and sitting there in front of Union Temple's parking lot for more than six weeks. I walked by one time and tried to decipher the inscription on the back of it ... all I could make out was the text:

    "Back Off Bitch"

In very flowery, cursive lettering. Not kidding.

Dammit, that's where I left it! I gotta stop drinking. :?
