Applebee's... — Brooklynian

Applebee's...

Subject: Applebee's...

Did anyone see those crazy lines of people when the Applebee's opened on New York and Fulton?

Has anyone bothered to walk in there yet? Any opinions on how this affects the area (chain sit-down restaurants)?

    It's more like a TGI Friday's or a Bennigan's.

Or Chili's, Houlihan's, Olive Garden... or Chotchky's, of course!

I think the category is called "casual dining restaurants." It's mostly a suburban phenomenon (although more and more of them are opening in NYC)- basically a step up (barely) from fast food. They tend to have very standard accessible food (burgers, chicken fingers, salads, chicken sandwiches, wings, potato skins, nachos, steaks, salmon, pastas, etc), a bar, and very explicit policies regarding customer service for waitstaff. They try to cater to families and an after-work crowd.

There was also a Simpsons episode where Moe turns his bar into a restaurant of this type, called Uncle Moe's Family Feedbag.

Thanks - It seems really out of place in Bed-Stuy, there's a lot of small moderately priced restaurants along and around Fulton, a bland chain restaurant would seem like it would not do well.

  • The Applebee's downtown Brooklyn has really bad service. The waiters/waitresses are rude and hardly ever get the order right, so I don't expect for this one to be any better. They both are under the same management.

I don't see any possible reason to find out. This isn't the suburbs- we have plenty of inexpensive dining options without going to some crappy chain restaurant.
  • Applebee's update. Went to an event at Citibank one night and after it was over went with some folks to Applebee’s for a drink.

    Waitress: What would you like?
    Man: Do you have Bass?
Waitress: No, we don't have that kind of fish

Another gentleman ordered Johnnie Walker Black on the rocks. She kept referring to his drink as "Walkers"...

"I'll come back with your Walkers" "Do you want a refill on your Walkers?"

Now, in her defense, she looked to be sixteen, this was clearly her first waitressing job and what she lacked in experience she made up for in enthusiasm. Don't see myself going there to eat if I have any other option, but it's clean and they were clearly trying. Also, its really bright inside. Don't know what the logic is behind that, but everyone I was with commented on it.
  • i hate applebees and other chains like it, but folks not from the city tend to love it and only eat that kinda crap when they come vist instead of myriad of food joints around the city.
