about takeout in Park Slope in general
When I first moved to Park Slope, I was staggered by the sheer number of places to eat. I practically live on takeout. Since then, I have found the takeout in the neighborhood as a whole to be very disappointing. I can't believe that in a neighborhood like Park Slope there really isn't a noteworthy pizza place. There really isn't any good Chinese food in PS either (Mr. Wonton is serviceable). The Indian restaurants are absolutely abominable (I've hear Kinara is good - will try). There is one serviceable Thai place - Long Tan - but it isn't something that would make me devoted to the place. I don't expect the "ethnic" food in PS to be as good as in Queens, but come on, someone must be able to do better. Even the takeout in a place like Williamsburg is much better than this. If you are a vegetarian in Park Slope, and you eat a lot of takeout, the options are pretty paltry. This fucking sucks! A downside of being "upscale". The neighborhood is pretty though, and it has Gorilla Coffee.

Subject: Food in PS
I was very disappointed in the pizza in PS. Coming from LI, I thought it would be better here.
I live in WT, so it's really bad as the places on PPW are awful for pizza.
That said, I like Joe's on 5th and 11th (?) and Anthony's on 7th and 14th is pretty good.
As for Chinese, I like Number One Garden. Cheap, fast and delivers even small orders.
I don't really eat Indian food, so no recs there. -

the taliban restaurants on atlantic are pretty good and cheap
basmati rice, and lentils and spinach are always to be found
combined that with roasted vegetables and eggplant dip and you're good
and for great chinese takeout, go to No Pork Halal kitchen on 4th avenue
and Bergen street. they make this great vegetable fried rice that is amazing. with big chunks of steamed broccoli -

For Windsor Terrace: I heard that Laura's on Prospect Ave has great pizza. I am going to try that soon.

Uh, what exactly do you mean by 'taliban restaurant'? -
Subject: oy vey
man you park slopers are spoiled brats! in lefferts gardens my takeout choices include mediocre pizza place, mediocre typical chinese, and mexican takeout from the chinese place! but hey i pay half what you do for rent, so i'm not complaining. try cooking! -
It is far from being as bad as you say. Anthony's on 7th Avenue is very good brick oven pizza. Joe's on 7th and Roma Pizza are also good.
For chinese? I like Number One Garden on the other side of the park-but they do deliver to center slope-I also like Red Hot Szechuan very much.
As for indian food-Kinara is good and so is Star Of India -
Anonymous PS Dweller - La Villa on 5th has a killer Margherita pizza. Their food also arrives hot & steamy on take-out.
quijibo - what the hell are "Taliban restaurants?" You can't possibly be referring to the people of Middle Eastern and North African descent who have toiled long and hard to establish businesses on Atlantic can you? And you can't be talking about Bahar because you probably don't know where that is. -

God, that's horrible. I'd feel bad for the squalor you live in, except that you come across as a total ass.outeraccelerator wrote: man you park slopers are spoiled brats! in lefferts gardens my takeout choices include mediocre pizza place, mediocre typical chinese, and mexican takeout from the chinese place! but hey i pay half what you do for rent, so i'm not complaining. try cooking!

Yeah, quijibo, thanks alot. Now this thread isn't going to be about how somebody should open up a vegetarian place and run it at a loss, but instead TEH OUTRAGE at your use of the word Taliban. C'mon, dude, you had to know how that would turn out...

Livetotravel, your indignation would be a little easier to take if you didn't have a murdering stooge as your avatar. -

Who needs good takeout when there's SuperRichWallStreeters living just nextdoor to communist revolutionaries? The dumpster diving must be superb! -

Duffman - superb comment! While I have no interest in or problem with dumpster diving, from a strictly sociological standpoint the content of the trash of the wealthy speaks volumes about who we are as a society and a people.
Besides that, the trask provides my less-wealthy friends and neighbors with housheld furnishings and sustenance for my puppies. -
sorry - those last two guest commenst were mine -

Heh, I think we can proclaim this thread officially hijacked. I shall attempt to get us back on course.
NOW. I know that the former Master Wok was in no way, shape, or form authentically Chinese enough for the gourmands in the Slope (what would be?), but I found it a very good place for an "American-style" Chinese food fix. They were great at what they did. It now appears to be under new management, new name, etc. I gave it a shot and I must say it was bad...anyone know of a good fill-in for that sort of thing? -
Thank the goddesses that the hijacking has been averted. In thanks I give you my best best for great Chinese food in the Slope...

at work we use the word "taliban" to refer to the street vendors who sell falafels and middle eastern food, etc... first time i heard, i thought.
"yo. that's just wrong. wrong.wrong" --
but it helps to relieve some of the tension left in the wake of 9/11
so now i use it, among friends, to refer to middle eastern food.
it's not p.c. -- the world is not p.c.
now. where is this Bahar? -

Thanks, I'll give them a try. The menu looks spot on, for sure.

I always forget about Hunan Delight-they are good-love their shrimp dishes

Can only go there once is the problem. They show you a picture of a pork chop then shoot you in the back of the head. That is unless you're part of the brass, then Yale invites you for matriculation.
OK I'll stop now...! -
Have you guys ever been to Vegetarian Palate on Flatbush and St. Johns? The whole menu is vegetarian, and it's delicious. It's my Saturday night evening ritual -- the only day of the week that I treat myself to take out, and I eat there every Sat evening.
They've got chicken, fish, beef, pork -- but it's all imitation meat! -
Uncle Liao's on 5th and 10th has great Chinese.
-
Taliban means "student" or "seeker" in Arabic. Its a shame that murderous lunatics has appropriated the word as a synonym for oppressive, fanatical, theocratic rule.
It is also a shame that racists like quijibo use it as a slur.

OK - we can get back on track NOW.
Song delivers very good Thai. -
I love SONG-but, they don't deliver on the weekends.

nope. i'm not a racist.
i don't judge people by their skin color
but by their actions
we should hear a lot more outrage
coming from the islamic community
about 9/11 and islamic extremists than
pleas for platitudes of political correctness -

if you're in prospect lefferts garden
you got some pretty kick-ass cuisine
there's a lot of caribbean
close to the associated on flatbush,
there's a caribbean health food store
with soy fish whole wheat patties
-- these suck
don't get them
the ones that are most kick-ass
are the fish patties
nice. get the whole wheat spinach pattie
and the bakeries always sell baked fish fresh spicy for cheap
and the callallo's good
plus the pizzeria around the corner from parkside avenue
has really great cheese.
classic bronx slice
and the caribbean restaurants sell this baked fried fish
that you know is not good for you
but it to tastes soooo good
escoviche...
there's good food there -
I actually like the food at the new place that was Master Wok more. Granted, I have only had a few dishes, but I thought it was much better. Of course, the kitchen fire that has closed the place has been tough on the deliveries :? .
As for Hunan, that was the first Chinese place I ordered from when I moved here, and I thought it was good, but after ordering another 2 times, I wasn't thrilled, and moved on. -

So you think the guy selling falafel on the street is responsible for 9-11? I've read about Muslim leaders denouncing terrorism, especially American ones, but they also run the danger of painting themselves as terrorists via denial : "Prove that you are not a terrorist!" Since when is it OK to refer to ethnic minorities with bigoted slurs to "relieve tension"? Ah well. -
kiku on 5th is really good, and you don't even have to call them - zipmenu.com.
(first post - nice to meet everybody)
