Wine wars in PH! (was: new wine shop, vanderbilt)

the owner (or manager?) of Brooklyn Beer and Soda told me today that he was opening a "wine shop" on Vanderbilt--I think he said 695. He said he had just laid down floors yesterday and that it would be ready to open in a few weeks.

I can only imagine that Fermented Grapes won't be too damaged--I imagine he knows it exists and will probably try for the "cheaper" wine niche, which is nice for us poor folk. In any case, it's also good that commerce continues to flower in our fine neighborhood.

Speaking of Brooklyn Beer and Soda, they're sweet guys and their drinks (if not their beer, but beer is expensive no matter where you go) are really cheap, so if you want a cheap soda, it's a nice place to stop into.

  • Jetro, over by the big Home Despot under the BQE, has a beer section that's open to the public and is fiendishly cheap - a case (that's 24) of Brooklyn Lager for $22, etc.

It's where I stock up for my parties, and you usually see restaurant owners buying there..
  • Wine wars!

    A neighborhoodie just told me:

The wine store on Flatbush next to Chase bank--you know, the one "run by the lady who yells at her employees" - she is taking over the vacant storefront next to her.

So double the wine on Flatbush, and double the wine on Vanderbilt.

Is this a Prospect Heights wine glut in the making? Maybe, but this is pretty much in line with economic trends - alcohol purchases are cyclical, and beer is on the decline. Wine and spirits sales are up.
  • Time for more BYOB places to open!
  • or time for more pot lucks. :) "bring wine. oh. and food."
  • god, i'm so tired of wine. I'd be so down with an awesome whiskey store.
  • Subject: Car Pool to LaNell's

i no longer have a car, but if whiskey is what you need and you want it good and cheap (esp. bourbon) someone - and i'm not saying who - should organize a trip to LaNell's in Redhook. Best store maybe in all nyc, but terrible to get to unless car or long bus ride or long walk are involved. Moreso in winter times but still, I need to stock up.
  • awesome! thanks for the tip. i'll hit it up this weekend.
