how to dispose of wood/metal junk?

hey - i'm cleaning a bunch of junk out of my new backyard and was wondering if it's possible to have nyc sanitation pick it up? and if so, how do i bag it up or prepare it for them?

otherwise i am going to have to call 800gotjunk or someone off craigslist, and have no idea how much those services cost. i have no problem hauling all that stuff to the curb if nyc will take it, just don't want to put it out with household trash if i'm not supposed to.

if nyc won't pick it up, is a dump that i can take it to on my own?

it's not a lot, just some old extra fence boards, rusty metal pipes, concrete chunks and bricks.

thanks

  • How about waiting by your trash on trash day, then tipping the nyc sanitation worker?

...I predict this method will save you much time and hassle.
  • Sanitation will take reasonable amounts of wood and metal on bulk pickup days. Wood can't have exposed nails and must be tied or secured. Loose scrap must be bagged and there is a weight requirement. Call 311 and they can give you the details
  • 311 does not talk about handing Sanitation Workers cash
  • All nails pounded down, everything bundled and bagged in commonsense sizes...I've done that with no problem.
Sanitation probably publishes the details on nyc.gov if you don't want to wait on the phone with 311.
  • thanks ya'll. sounds like for the wood i need to take the nails out and cut it down to 4' pieces.

it doesn't say whether i should bag up the metal or not. i guess i'll through the small stuff in a contractor bag and then bundle up the long pipes.

i'll pace it out over the next few collections. thanks!
