Olive Oil — Brooklynian

Olive Oil

Where's the best place to get good olive oil in the hood?

I am almost done with my current bottle of Fairway Greek Kalamata and now that I do most of my shopping at Trader Joe's, Red Hook just doesn't seem worth the trek for a bottle of oil, no matter how tasty...

Comments

  • i'd say d'vine taste on 7th avenue near, garfield.
  • D'Ecco in the big green bottle for $9.99 at the Met on Vanderbilt is my 'go to" olive oil. Second is Fairway's Umbria for around 14 bucks. But I hardly ever make it to Fairway so I have to make it last.

    D'vine has lovely things though...
  • Have you tried the Trader Joe's olive oil? I just got a bottle and it's quite good. They have quite a few.
  • i believe they call it trader giotto's, since it's italian

that always makes me laugh. I told my friend and he thought I was kidding. he put down the phone, went to his fridge and found some of the different names.

    So far, I've found:

    Trader Jacques'
    Trader Jose's
    Trader Giotto's
    Trader Ming's

    and of course Trader Joe's.
  • Fairway has some nice choices.... and you can taste them.
  • this isn't quite what you asked, but...

i STRONGLY recommend Fortuna brand. i collect olive oil cans, so we buy a different kind every time. when people see the collection, they always ask which one is best. i've never had an answer before -- only the really bad ones stuck out (El Toro -- fabulous can, though). this is the first time i've been tempted to abandon the project and get the same kind again.

i got this can at DiPaola's in little italy, but if you see it in the slope, get it.

thats a really cute collection idea.
  • Russo's on 7th Ave has a fairly large collection of good olive oils. They have my favorite; which I first brought back from Rome last year. That's Frantoia but it's a little pricey so I don't use it for cooking. I use it for dressing, dipping, drizzling in soups, etc.

For a good, cheap, everyday olive oil, i really dig the D'Ecco as well. It's very flavorful, has good consistency and is wicked cheap.

it just kinda happened, because i have no self-control about throwing pretty things away. but now i'm quite attached to it. figure i'll use them for vases at that big outdoor wedding party i will have someday.
  • I buy the large bottle of Felippo Berio extra virgin at Costco, mainly for cooking. The Fairway Greek Kalamata sounds great.
I always pick up bottles here and there of different oils and balsamic vinegars. More so when the weather is nice for salads.

Speaking of vases, I bought a large can of Mancini roasted peppers at Costco a few months ago and use that for a vase. The other day I bought a cheap bunch of different types of yellow flowers at Key Food. Looks great.
  • Russo's on 7th has a great selection of domestic & imported extra virgin olive oils. Everything from moderately-priced supermarket brands to the bright green "estate reserve" imports from Italy. If you go during the day, you won't wait in line, either.
  • I can't believe no one has said Sahadi's. It's not exactly in Park Slope, but if Trader Joe's and Fairway are options, then surely Sahadi's is, right?
  • Grab seems to have a small assortment of olive oils. I can't remember the main brand they sell, but they offer bottle refills at a discount.
  • The New Yorker had a great article a few years back about the olive oil business - apparently there's a lot of adulteration and counterfeiting that goes on with olive oil, and buying well-known or premium brands won't guarantee you're safe from the scams.

Ever since reading that, I've been kind of paralyzed when it comes to olive oil shopping.

I suppose at the end of the day, if you're happy with the product, it doesn't matter much if you're eating flavored hazelnut, soy or canola (ie rapeseed) oil.
  • You have to be careful when shopping for olive oil because many bottles will say olive oil on the label, but once you look at the ingredients you can see that it is a mix of vegetable and olive oils. I go to A&S deli in Bay Ridge for the real deal.
  • Sitia, 0.7 Greek olive oil in the tin or bottle.

Most likely, you'll have to go to Astoria (Titan or the place on 31st Street between Ditmars and Astoria Blvd on the N train).

It may seem far, but you should expand your notion of "neighborhood" here in New York.

Nice. I like both Greek and Spanish olive oils more than Italian or French. Astoria is a great place to get delicious greek olive oils, but it's a bit of a pain to get to from here unless you have a car.

You mean the wedding for me and papi??
You've inspired me, I may need to collect cans, and not for recyling, though it may come to that :?

Back to point: I like the unfiltered olive oil at TJ's, tastes full bodied.
