Jeweler to dip ring — Brooklynian

Jeweler to dip ring

Wife's ring needs to be re-rhodium (aka: dipped). Just learning now that after a few years, white gold starts to turn to shades of yellow and needs a jeweler to remove the yellow and bring back the luster.

Anyhow, just wondering if anyone has ever done this. If so, did you go somewhere close? Suggestions?

And no, I can't bring it to the jeweler we bought it from as I purchased directly from a family friend/diamond dealer.

Thanks for the help all.

  • Any jewelry store should be able to send this to a jewelry manufacturer to have this done. Do you know the manufacturer? Most manufacturers offer free or very cheap rhodium plating- if you can read the stamp on the inside of the ring and try to find a local dealer that uses the same manufacturer they should be able to send it out for you.

No luck for the same manufacturer on the ring.

    Thanks, however.
  • The reason why the ring shows different coloration is because 14kt gold is not pure gold. It is actually only 58.3% gold and the balance is other metals (including nickel, copper, etc.). The closer you get to 24kt the more pure the gold. White gold is less blue/white than platinum.

As for the rhodium plating, some jewelers on 47th street will actually do it for a nominal fee of $$10 to $25. I would go to 47th Street (or Bowery but I can only name 1 or 2 there) - Should have it done every two years or so.

    Hope that helps!
  • The most common manufacture of settings is Ingwer - located on 47th street. If it is their setting, I believe they waive the fee.
  • Very helpful. One last question: how much time does it take usually? An hour? A week?
  • The last time I had this done, I went to Garry Jewellers. but, honestly, I haven't seen him open in ages now and am not sure what is going on there.
  • I would expect to be without the ring for a few days. It doesn't take a super long time but theres always a wait involved. Also, if its an engagement ring make sure you insure the stone or remove it before you send it off!
  • Thanks all. Stone is absolutly insured!
  • Np. I worked at a jewelry manufacturer for 2+ years, I know the ins and outs ;)

I am sure this is one of your wife's prize possessions and while they are a little expensive (which I am sure she is worth ;) ) I suggest William Barthman Jewlers on Broadway in downtown Manhattan. They are they only place I trust to repair or adjust any of my jewelry. Each time I used them, they have done a magnificent high quality job. Good luck.
  • Stacey, would you recommend your jeweler to set a loose stone in a necklace? I don't know what kind of setting I want and would like some suggestions.

100%. I never had to get suggestions from them but they did a great job on a ring that had two loose stones where they removed the stones, fixed the setting and then put the stones back.
