Need to put my cat to sleep -- at-home services?

shinybeast
edited November -1 in Park Slope
Our cat has heart failure (and a few other things) and she's slipping pretty rapidly. We've been taking her to Animal Kind and have been fine with their services (not their bills, though), but we'd rather not take her there to be put to sleep (after way too many visits there, she really hates the place). Unfortunately, they have limited options for off-site visits for putting pets to sleep. Has anyone had this done in their home in this neighborhood and were happy with the services? If so, could you pass on info?

Thanks in advance.

  • First of all, I'm so sorry.
I have a friend that goes to Park Slope Veterinary Care and they don't come to your home to do that, but they recommended someone who would and she was happy with them. You can call PSVC and ask...but I also know someone that did do this through Animal Kind.
My heart goes out to you
  • I'm sorry for your loss, I hope she can be at peace as soon and painlessly as possible.
  • I dread the day I have to do this for my cat, and I'm sorry for the pain you must be going through. I hope you find a way to do this peacefully.
  • so sorry for your loss! Hope she goes peacefully, and stays in your hearts forever.
  • I am very sorry that you have to go through such a sad loss with your cat. Stay strong for her and enjoy the remaining time you have with her.
  • When BF and I put his cat down (good 'ole Nino- RIP) we went to Hope clinic on Atlantic. They were great- put us in the office with a couch where they let us stay as long as we wanted. The staff was amazing and really accommodating. I cannot speak highly enough for the way they treated us. They also sent a handwritten, really lovely sympathy card afterwards- totally unexpected and just nice.

While I realize you want to do it at home- I think the process of actually administering the shots is one you should let the pros handle. You need to be the one holding your beloved kitteh and seeing him/her to the Rainbow Bridge.

    I'm so sorry.
  • Everyone, thanks a bunch for the kind thoughts and recommendations. Greatly appreciated!

Just to be clear, Animal Kind does do house calls for this, but the earliest they're available is next Thursday.
  • I'm tearing up just thinking of being in your situation and my furry one isn't that far out of puppydom. I have no useful information to contribute but just wanted to express that I'm sorry and that folks in the big mean anonymous internet are thinking of you.
  • Yeah, I'm really sad but trying to look on the bright side. I caught her in a burlap sack (set up like a tent with food in the bottom) in a vacant lot in Fort Greene when she was a stray kitty. It took three flea baths at the vet to clean her up, but she took to domestic living pretty quickly. She's been with my wife and me for nearly the whole of our relationship (the kitten was a "present"), so she's really quite the family member. Cute as a button, feisty as hell and able to carry on "conversations." I'd like to think she's lived a good life (and hope she does, too). Definitely a heck of a lot better (and longer) one than the one she would have lived if she didn't encounter me and that damn burlap bag in Brooklyn.
  • Sorry about the kitty. Good luck in choosing the right place.
  • Sorry about your kitty. Love the burlap bag for love - great story.

Also heard lots of good things about Hope Vet handling final day. They may do home visits too, and have a relatively big staff, seven days a week.
They were really really nice - understanding and professional -- about being scheduled as a backup plan for the days our vet was closed when our pet was close to the end.

  • yes, Hope will do home euthanasia. they don't have a schedule -- i think it's based on their availability and i'm not sure if you have to already have been a patient there.

i wanted them to come for my cat but she died the morning/night before we were trying to schedule.

also, this guy does house calls. he was recommended by my former vet in manhattan. he's a little hard to get ahold of and schedule, which could be a problem in this case, but it's worth a try:

  • Try Dr. Neuman at Vinegar Hill Vets, my parents use her and love her. She made a house call when my parents had to put my childhood cat to sleep. (Misha was almost 22, mostly blind and deaf, it was definitely her time.) Dr. Neuman was beyond caring and made a terribly sad situation more bearable. My thoughts are with you and your kitty. I'm sure she had a very happy life with you and your wife.

  • First of all, my deepest sympathies! I know all too well how it is to lose a beloved pet, my prayers are with you all!

As for your query, I am not going to be very helpful here. We had our previous dog put to sleep in our house 6 years ago and we had Animal Kind (even though they weren't our vets, they agreed to do it) come to our home and do it. They were wonderful by the way. all the best to you.
