People who study such things seem to agree
http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/cdp/cdp_pan_know_obesity.shtml
but they don't comment on whether they should wear spandex. -
strong island in da house!!
My gf is from there and says the same thing!
Also about how the women seem to not like to wear makeup and walk around like they dont take pride in their appearance -
occasionally I see stories that say the mid-west is even more obese.
it may depend on the specific neighborhood as well. It seems to be tied to income. The NYT has done lots of stories on it, I especially remember the one that pointed out that high calorie food is cheapest. -

There is a great saying that seems like it was made for Spandex - "Just because they make it in your size does not mean you can wear it"hitokiri wrote: Also about how the women seem to not like to wear makeup and walk around like they dont take pride in their appearance
Hey I take offense to that since I don't wear make up
And if you are talking about make up and Staten Island well lets just say its not just the women there who wear too much

It's you.
Any thoughts on this?
As you've already noticed, ideas about what looks good differ here from where you grew up in Long Island. :roll:hitokiri wrote: strong island in da house!!

Why is it that whenever there's a post on these message boards about obesity, it's always focused on women? There are plenty of over-sized gents in brooklyn, too, but without fail, every time this convo comes up on the Brooklynian, it's about large women and what they choose to wear.
I'm all for picking on strangers over superficial things, but come on people: Let's be equal opportunity haters! -
You mean we glorify the deceased B.I.G.?
(this would be sarcasm) -
Stupid men with their ignorant, better than thou attitudes.
L Keys this is the first post you make on this website?? My God, good luck. I hope we scare you away. Where's Beave???? -

Thoughts? Um yes. My first thought is you suck. I'm not personally insulted because I'm not fat and I look awesome in spandex, but still I'll stand with my fat, unmade-up sisters here. On the off chance that you were trying to be funny, I'd say, um, try again. Not an especially funny post and I think if you're gonna be mean, you have to at least entertain in some way.
Any thoughts on this?

Sounds like someone got turned down by a "fat chick"

Yep, big girls don't like trolls.

You know if I was someone who generalized like OP I would say that women on Long Island dress tacky (just because you wear sky-high heels and clingy, shiny clothes doesn't make you a supermodel).
I also had occasion to be in a couple of liquor stores on different occasions there after 9/11 and, if I was someone who generalized, I would say that it was like being in the (stereotypical) South. The liquor store owners were refusing to carry Grey Goose Vodka because it was owned by a French company (France did not support the invasion of Iraq - perhaps we might re-think that, now?) and they were pouring out French wine on camera for local TV stations to videotape, supposedly depicting their hatred of the French (hatred of the French being one of the only bigoted views that somehow is allowed to stand, post-Obama). If I generalized I would have thought, "Man, these people are cheesy, ignorant and completely uneducated." -
So, to recap-
everyone is saying that all people should enjoy watching obese people in spandex? I'm not model thin or obese (I would call myself about as average as one can be, perhaps even a little thick) and I would NEVER plague society with my body in spandex. As a matter of fact...no one should wear spandex. Ever.
I don't think the OP should catch so much shit for saying he doesn't appreciate overweight people in spandex...I would guess that the majority of society agrees with him. Be whatever size you want (and be attracted to whatever size you like!) but recognize that not all (and not most) people may find the same things visually appealing.
Plus, why wear something that is obviously not figure-flattering? I have big hips- I try not to wear clothes that accentuate that (IE- a-lines are my friend, skinny jeans are not.) If you're thick wherever you are, wear stuff that doesn't make you look worse...like neon leggings with cropped mini-tees. -
I think part of the issue is that he wasn't directing his comments as "obese people in spandex" as you put it but that he directed his post at women, only. I don't think OP would have been any more turned on had the people he had been looking at been overweight men in spandex.
I think another issue is that he was comparing Brooklyn women to Long Island women and, in that case, beauty is in the eye of the (tacky) beholder. -
I think I get it now, fat people are ugly and therefore shouldn't go out in public? I'm sorry, these threads about xyz group of people suck are just ridiculous.
Edit: Oops, never mind. I forgot I was on the internet. ;-) -
ok but really how many obese men do you see in spandex? I rarely see any. I rarely see men in spandex in general on the "street" (non-park running/biking loop)
-
So what's your point?
-
my point is that him saying "obese women shouldnt wear spandex" doesn't merit being berated by an entire message board
-
I am NOT saying I agree with starting a thread about fat-hate...but treating the OP like a bigot for saying he doesnt want to view fat chicks in running shorts seems like overkill
-
P.S. I rarely see women or men in spandex but sometimes I do see people of both sexes in spandex and they are usually people who are fit and running and can get away with wearing spandex. Count me as someone who enjoys looking at people wearing spandex in Carroll Gardens because they look great in it (maybe only obese people wear spandex in the Slope, etc.).

[quote="Carmen"]So, to recap-

Nope. Not saying that all. Just saying the post wasn't funny and it seemed mean to me. I think a "yo momma so fat she takes up both sides of the block" joke can be funny though. So apparently I can laugh at a fat joke. Go figure. -
I also don't think it's clear what gender the poster is at all.
-
Carmen wrote: my point is that him saying "obese women shouldnt wear spandex" doesn't merit being berated by an entire message board
He didn't just say that obese women shouldn't wear spandex. He tried to make it into a Brooklyn woman versus Long Island women thing. Sorry, but there's enough sexism in this country, I have little tolerance for him comparing how the women he grew up with are so much more attractive than the women who live in Brooklyn are. If you don't like eeing PEOPLE (not just women) wearing spandex, then avert your eyes.
End of story. -
this whole thread just seems stupid to me. I consider myself raised in the south, and if someone said they found Northern women more attractive than Southern women I wouldn't be offended...its called a preferance for a reason. I think people ITT are being too sensitive...anyone with an iota of self-confidence wouldn't waste time trying to "prove wrong" the OP.
Would a similar thread develop if he posted that he found native Icelandic women most attractive? I think not...its a personal bias on the part of the objector that is causing the argument. -
Still don't think the poster said that LI women were more attractive than Brooklyn women. The post was cryptic. It said the poster grew up on LI, which in their opinion was like growing up on another planet or something--what that means is up for grabs.
When I read it--I thought it was a women poster at first. -

Man, people say some out of whack things on the intratweet. I disagree with your argument about personal bias on the part of the objector causing the argument and also with your call that only people who don't have an iota of self-confidence would respond.

I don't personally feel offended by anyone making fun of spandex here or fat people or Brooklyners or LIers, northerners or southerners. I just think it's in poor taste to make fun of obese people and to also do it poorly. It tends to make you look like an idiot and insensitive, which is why I told the OP that they sucked. Chances are the OP was looking for this response anyway. -
You wanna see some disgusting obese men who put humanity to shame? Go hang around Farrels, Its actually entertaining.

^THIS.
the problem with this thread isn't what kind of women the OP does or doesn't like to see wearing spandex or tutus or carhartts. the problem is that the OP thinks women should dress according to what he likes to look at. -
Well I certainly understand that. I wish all men wore lovely ironed shirts tucked into to slim cut Boss slacks with pretty socks and shiney shoes. And I wish girls with those loooooong slim legs would wear short flippy flowered skirts and strappy sandals all year long. Sigh.
Howdy, Stranger!
