Patio Gardens; moving to Brooklyn — Brooklynian

Patio Gardens; moving to Brooklyn

Hi everyone,
my room mate and I are moving to Brooklyn in June from another state and this past weekend, we spent it roaming around brooklyn neighborhoods to see where to live. Initially, we tried contacting various realtor agents to show us places...but there's no luck. Most of them don't wanna show us places until it's closer to June. That is understandable but at least we got to see which areas are safe. We're both excited to move to Nyc and never lived in a major city, but we want to live in a relatively safe neighborhood.

Does anyone have any advice? we googled some apartment complexes and the only apts available were patio gardens and Ebbetts fields. Can anyone comment on the area and the complex? The last thing I found on Patio gardens was back in 2005 on this forum and it seemed to be favorable but of course, things could have changed since 2005. The office is closed on saturday...the day we're leaving..

Thanks in advance! :)

  • those places aren't in prospect heights. i'll move this to the crown heights/PLG forum -- is that the right area, somebody? -- but the advice is generally:

everybody has a different comfort level. it's good that you're walking around neighborhoods. keep doing that, and try to visit places you're serious about at night, too, ideally with someone who both knows you well enough to give good advice and also is used enough to the city to have a sense of what's worrisome and what's just city life.
  • Not familiar with patio, but I personally wouldn't want to live in ebbetts.(Although the views are supposed to be amazing) Why are you specifically looking at complexes? In other cities, I guess that's the thing to do and a good place to start, but NY complexes tend to be a bit "busy."
  • i moved from another state too and used only craigslist. but, you won't really be able to do anything until like May. it sucks moving here initally for reasons like that. other places in the US let you sign leases months in advance and they're part of complexes, etc... but this isn't the suburbs.
