Deli renovation at Washington/St. John's SW
Subject: Deli renovation at Washington/St. John's SW
I had a peak into the open door at the deli on the SW corner of Washington and St. John's yesterday. They totally gutted it, put in a new deli case, grill (with overhead vent), etc. and completely cleaned the place up. All the equipment appears to be *new* and not used. This isn't some slapdash once-over, but a total renovation.I'm hopeful the place will raise the tone from the other neighborhood bodegas and delis. (OK, everyone feel free to chime in on why we shouldn't be negative about bodegas, the "old neighborhood" charms, etc., as this board is wont to do)
Does anyone know any specifics on the place? Is it the same owners? I always liked those guys...

I'm amazed at how quickly things are opening up/renovating on Washington Ave. It's like all the pent up demand is finally popping.
Last night I saw a couple new places on Washington btwn prospect and st marks. There's Cake Works - a cake decorating and party supply store next to Ginger root, next door to that is what will be a new RE broker, and it looks like there is another RE broker that is right across the street.
Those plus the new bagel place another block down, the newly coming pizza/cafe across from the new condos, New World Coffee (another 2 months for this I'm told), the cafe at Grand and Prospect, ... This is a major number of new places opening up in a really short period of time.
I think it's really great because once these vacant storefronts are filled it will change the whole dynamic of the strip and will create a snowball effect. I'm sure there will be a lot of turn over in the next couple of years but this is always the case with a new commercial strip getting established. -
It's great to hear about all the new stuff coming in on Washington. Last night I dropped my cats off at Unterberg's place, where they're going to stay until after I move into my new apartment on Bergen on Friday, and afterward I walked down Washington from St. Marks to the Eastern Parkway subway station to try to get some sense of what's going to be available. I couldn't really tell what was new and what had been there for a while. Granted, this was the first time I'd walked that long a stretch of Washington (I've done a couple blocks here and there before) but it really does feel like it's on the verge of picking up and getting more lively.

SOrry to say this, but the pizza/cafe that's coming on Wash between Bergen/St. Marks is by way of Bangladesh. Most likely the dozens of guys who hang relentlessly outside the bodega below me right next door will now do their chainsmoking and asking you if you're married there instead. Whooppee. Maybe they do know how to make a decent pizza. :? The guy who owns that building is very nice, and the cafe' has been a dream of his for a long time.

yeah, I'm figuring that many of these business will be crappy at the beginning. However, the good ones will stay and the bad will go out of business. Most will do some level of renovations which improves the overall feel of the strip. Hopefully they will get signs that are better than the homemade ones like at PK's Sports Bar.
I think that just having something is better than empty storefronts because it will give people who are looking to open a business more confidence in the neighborhood as a whole. Then when one goes under someone else will swoop in to take the space.
Having empty storefronts just leads to a very desolate feeling that won't inspire confidence for those looking to invest. Having something, anything, in these storefronts is a big improvement. -

Talked to the owner of the pizza/cafe this am, he says it's opening up end of April, and will be a diner with all kinds of food. Ok then!
