I agree...does anyone know how to request for a bike lane(s)...getting to the park is a pain from vandy...i sometimes take underhill, but i find it soo dangerously narrow (not to mention full of bumps), and crossing the grand army plaza circle is suicidal...
also...anyone up for a bike happy hour in the park (sans the drinks) one of these warm weekends? (any hour spent on a bike is happy for me!) -

There is a bike lane that goes directly from Vanderbilt to the corner of Union and PPW (opposite the entrance to the park). It's on Plaza Street. Alternately, you could walk across the crosswalks and past the fountain, which I find rather enjoyable.
We have had discussions about bike lanes before on this board. Though I would never complain too much about the city doing something to help cyclists, bike lanes can be a mixed blessing, especially when installed seemingly in order to appease 311 callers and snag federal funds. These are the lanes that begin out of nowhere and end just as abruptly and are not incorporated into any larger plan for making alternative transportation more safe or efficient. My favorite example is the utterly idiotic Manhattan side of the Manhattan Bridge bike path. Bike lanes are an easy and cheap way to avoid dealing with the myriad problems of surface transportation in the city. The latest Brooklyn Views blog post has a great examination of possible solutions to these problems (and how our lil' ol' neighborhood sits at the crux of many problems both present and coming soon).
More people on bikes, please! -

As if the painted bike lanes really mean that much. I bike to work everyday it's possible. I sometimes take the Bergan bike lane if I can get to it without getting killed crossing Flatbush. But if I can't get to the bike lane, I just ride Flatbush to the Brooklyn Bridge.
I will admit, drivers are usually good about keeping out of the bike lane unless they want to double park or drive like an asshole trying to sneak up the side.
But all in all, the bike lanes throughout Brooklyn are in disrepair. Anyway, has anyone ever got a ticket for parking in a bike lane in Brooklyn? -
I don't know about parking, but a friend of mine got a ticket the first day after they put the bike lane on Thompkins for driving in the lane. She was swerving around a double parked car (which was on the opposite side of the street), crossed into the bike lane and got pinched by a cop in a squad car behind her.

she should fight the ticket. if she was trying to avoid a double park car. some cops dont have comon sense or bother to use if they have any.
