fedders box thingies?
so, i just got accepted to move into an adorable apartment on classon, but it's one of those buildings that looks like an advertisement for fedders on the outside with all the air conditioner boxes.
i always thought these boxes actually *were* air conditioners, but apparently they are just to hold them or something? how do they work?
sorry, this may seem stupid, but i looked at the ones in the apartment up close and i still don't understand how a typical air conditioner unit would work in there...any help?
i asked the real estate agent but she made little to no sense on this topic.
thanks in advance! just need to know whether i should bring my old unit with me when i move, or if i'll need some special flatter kind.

You'll probably need a new one. Through the wall units are different than the standard window units.

boo. okay. thanks for the info!

Get a tape measure and get busy. If the old one is of a size the will fit, your good.
Air Conditioners come in pretty much standard sizes. Through the wall units just don't have the outer casing. -

sleeve. The kind of a/c's that thru the wall are known as sleeve units. I don't think you can use a wall unit in a thru the wall application, but I would ask an A/C guy.

Not true. the exhaust of the through the wall units is directed straight out. The window units need to utilize the sides of the sleeve.

the feders box thing is a sleeve meant for a sleeve air conditioner. you have to buy a special air conditioner that will fit in the sleeve.
pros
you can have an AC in your apartment and not block one of your windows.
cons
they are more expensive then normal window air conditioners.
they weigh a ton
if you leave them in through the winter it gets crazy drafty. And its a pain to take them out because they weigh so much.
I got one 2 years ago and am kind of meh about it. -
My friend lives in one of those Fedders jobbies and had no problem when AC season began last year. You may not be able to fit a monster AC but a standard size for one room should fit no problem. Measure it, but I think you'll find that those things are built to accommodate most ACs.

thanks for all the advice everyone! i'm gonna measure and go from there.

You CANNOT use regular window AC, since the heat exhausts from three sides, the wall AC exhausts only from back so hot air is not blowing inside your apartment.
