Union Streeet- filthy

Why is Union Street always covered in garbage? Both sides of the street feature strewn about trash every day... Is it the co-op? Spillover from the Tea Lounge? Bussacco? Scottaditto? Who do you complain to in order to get it cleaned?!?!?!?!

  • stop complaining and start sweeping
    :D
  • It's a busy two-way street so that may have something to do with it. I don't go down there much, but 9th street might get the same way.

I am on that block all the time and it is not the fault of any of the businesses you listed above. It is the fact that the there is a big empty building (currently under some sort of demolition) and a parking garage / car rental company.

    http://www.smalltownbrooklyn.com/parkslopeN/eastwest/union/union4.html

The speedy car rental people treat the sidewalk like a gutter, its no surprise that there's a lot of litter.

    Call 311 to complain.
  • because there are no garbage cans! and people are constantly throwing their home garbage and recycling in the public bins. but it's not just union street; look around you. more garbage has been blowing in park slope streets lately, and i wonder what it signifies....

I can attest to the fact that 9th street does get the same way.
  • I guess a good follow-up question- aside from 311, who can we call. the Park Slope Civic Council? Is Leticia James our council woman? Sorry for the ignorance... it's just bothersome.
  • We definitely need more garbage cans on our streets. I live in center Slope and can walk for blocks and blocks without bumping into a city trash can (especially on 6th Avenue). Why is that??
  • For such an educated audience I am simply shocked the incorrect problem identification and shortsightedness of the solutions offered on this board.

The problem is not to few garbage cans. The problem is much more complicated and systematic than to have an answer (more cans) which is not replicatable nor sensible. If the answer was more cans then any level of garbage output could be satisfyingly solved with more and more cans. That is until the block is simply a garbage can itself - one long tin bin where any passerby with a hot coffee hand protector, plastic bag, bottle of water, or used condom can dispose of his/her refuse.

The problem is too much garbage. The problem is most of you are unwilling to admit it in the first place... The problem is that 80% of the time you don't need that bag, canister, or whatever other package you people use to tote around your pointless pieces of consumption.
  • So helpful as usual DR, are you and Obamanut the same person?

I know I do, and A lot of people in the area do, carry tote bags to cart their necessities and purchases with them. I also use a refillable coffee canister to carry my hot beverages in and my kids drink water out of refillable bottles,. And, I was not saying that garbage cans on 6th Avenue would solve the problem on Union Street, but was just commenting how there aren't any on 6th avenue now. And, there are times you need to throw something out, and having a garbage can to put it in would be better than throwing it in the street. But, go on, blame everything on us bad, bad park Slopers.
  • Thanks LongTimeSloper.

I wasn't accusing you or your kin of being disgusting leaches on society... just trying to point out the obvious.

Sounds like you're doing your part - as we all now know.
  • Oh, and yes, I am also Obamanut... because one obnoxious online persona wasn't enough for me.

You will never see us in the same room - that's for damn sure. I also post as "flexichick"... maybe you've heard of her. When I get really bored I post as germfree and/or penisenvy.com
  • Not very helpful here DR... and a bit naive/left-wing-nut to think consumption is the ultimate cause of the problem- sure, consumption by definition is a cause for trash but so is a lack of trash cans, poor removal, education, and blatant disregard for the community. The slope is a progressive community that prides itself on totes, recycling, etc.- wrong complaint for the wrong audience... More so, regardless your theory, it's not addressing how to get it cleaned up. Letter writing, phone calling, etc. is a good first step... I'm uninformed with regard to who to reach out to- hence the posting, but would rather a helpful suggestion rather than a judgmental rant.
  • All DR does is judgmental rants, snide comments, put downs, you get the drift.
  • Bullshit...

Sure there are progressive members of the Park Slope community but the vast majority, and I repeat vast, is nowhere near as aware or progressive enough to meet the challenge. Picture a 14 mile long, bumper to bumper train of tractor trailers leaving the city each day cart garbage to the sea... picture that every single day. Picture it because that is exactly what is happening.

Park Slope is better than some, but to believe for one second that we are "doing it right" is so naive it makes me want to puke right here on my keyboard.... and not even clean it up.

    So again, I call bullshit

Yeah, we have to be the change we want to see.
Help your neighbors out, if you see some trash on the floor pick it up and throw it way.
  • park slope (as everywhere else) could always stand for improvement, but clearly it's doing something right to get highlighted as one of the most eco-friendly neighborhoods IN THE COUNTRY!

  • DR- I suggest you move to any other community in this country, you may stop puking on your keyboard and move straight to climbing a water tower w/a rifle... (I feel bad for your keyboard- something tells me it's seen a ton of action).
  • i always see kids from john jay throwin little debbie wrappers all over the ground. and dogs are shitting and pissing all over the place, so i dont think a gum wrapper bothers me.

    thank you Mami

I think DR makes a good point. Just because it's not the answer you want to hear, and he's pissed you off in the past, doesn't make it any less right. If someone else said "We make too much trash" would you agree? How can you not agree with that??

In this case, I'd say calling 311 is not going to help. Some random building may get a trash ticket, but that trash probably blew on to their sidewalk.

Are we getting fewer pickups from the city trash cans on 7th and 5th Ave? I don't know. The civic council or park slope neighbors or someone might be tracking that. But complaining is not the solution, doing something like making sure your sidewalk is cleared off even if you didn't ditch your soda bottle in the tree well or toss your debbie cake wrapper when you ate your delicious breakfast on the go.
    :D
Srsly. Put your energy some place constructive.
There's a "clean up the berm thing" this weekend btw. Volunteer and make common cause with your civic-minded neighbors!
  • I've met Flexi. DR, you have a sweet, sweet rack.

Today's balmy temps remind us that Spring will come again and, with it, the urge to be outdoors - greening our neighborhood. So come one and all, old and young, to our first Berm clean-up of the year:

    Sat. March 28 from 9:45-noon

Meet at the corner of Plaza Street and Vanderbilt. Coffee and treats at 9:45; work starts at 10:00. Gloves and tools are provided.

As usual, your help is needed in spreading the word.

Please forward this notice to any neighborhood mailing lists.
Print the attached flyer and post it on your building's bulletin board.
    Invite neighbors to join you!
Beav, get back to the Lounge. And take your Debbie Cake wrapper with you.
  • I'll never share a Swiss Cake Roll with you. Ever. Again.

I still think calling 311 can work too. If random trash is always in front of the same property they should clean it up. They might get a warning before they get tickets, but if it is there on a regular basis they gotta clean it up.

I am gonna go pick up my kids at school and I promise to pick up at least 1 peace of litter on the way there.

ringrunner, I'm totally with you when it's a very specific situation like a construction site out of control.

  • Subject: Messy Streets

I just moved in town and that is the first thing I noticed, messy streets. Although the problem seems to a have plethora of causes, I think it comes down to the trash men. I witnessed their half-ass efforts to empty the trash into the truck and then they through the barrels back onto the sidewalk shaking out all of the remaining waste (i.e. paper, plastic, food, etc.). This morning it was embarrassing, barrels all over the street creating a slalom course and paper waster everywhere.
  • i hate to point out the obvious, but it was also really windy yesterday, which always throws around a lot more trash...
  • True, I know my block which is usually pretty clean always looks trashed after a very windy day
  • Everyone who is complaining itt needs to move to bedstuy. Until you have used condoms wrangled up with chicken bones and tumbleweave rolling across your stoop on the reg, no bitching allowed.

Ok, that's just gross. My sympathies.

Yes, it has been windy but PS still lacks garbage pails on every corner. Going to the Y today I couldn't believe the library yard was practically covered in trash. I've been seeing the Doe Fund guys around cleaning up but I guess they can't keep up. I walked behind two John Jay girls the other day throwing their chip bags on the ground, nice. Home owners get fines if trash is in front of their homes, they need to fine people throwing their trash on the sidewalks. The city could clean up money wise if they waited outside John Jay.
